Opera for Android now includes a travel eSIM, with a launch offer of 3GB of data free for three days in selected markets. It can keep a compatible Android phone’s apps online abroad—not just the Opera browser—but the free offer is not worldwide, and the service is data-only. Here’s who can use it, how to set it up, and what to check before relying on it for a trip.
What Opera’s built-in eSIM does
Announced on September 29, 2026, Opera’s travel eSIM is an embedded SIM that you install through software instead of inserting a physical SIM card. In Opera for Android, you can choose a destination, claim an eligible free allowance or buy a plan, install the eSIM, and manage top-ups. Opera says the service is powered by Holiday.com. Opera’s launch announcement and feature guide describe the service.
The connection provides mobile data to the phone as a whole. Maps, messaging, rideshare, and other apps can use it as well as the browser. It does not replace your regular phone number, and Opera describes the plans as data-only. If you need voice calls or texts through a local number, this eSIM alone does not provide that.

Who gets the free 3GB—and where it works
At launch, Opera offered eligible users 3GB free for three days. The free offer was limited to users in 11 markets: the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Canada, the United Arab Emirates, Brazil, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Poland. Being able to buy an eSIM for a supported destination does not make the free allowance available to everyone worldwide.

Check whether your Android phone is compatible
Opera’s launch guidance requires the latest version of Opera for Android, a phone running Android 10 or newer with eSIM capability, and a device that is carrier-unlocked. The feature is not available in Opera Mini or Opera GX mobile. Opera’s setup guide explains the installation flow.

Check your manufacturer’s specifications or the phone’s SIM settings.
- Check carrier lock status: A carrier-locked phone may prevent installation or use. Ask your carrier if you are unsure whether the device is unlocked.
- Update Opera: Use the current Opera for Android app, rather than Opera Mini or Opera GX mobile.
How to install and activate the eSIM
Opera advises setting up the eSIM before departure over a stable internet connection. The plan activates when the eSIM first connects to a mobile network in its destination country.

- Install or update Opera for Android.
- Open Opera’s profile menu and tap eSIM.
- Select your destination and choose the free offer, if your account is eligible, or a paid plan.
- Follow Opera’s and Android’s on-screen instructions to install the eSIM while connected to a stable network.
- After arrival, select the Opera eSIM for mobile data. Turn off data roaming on your regular SIM to help avoid roaming charges from your carrier.
Menu wording can vary by app version. Follow the current in-app prompts, and confirm which SIM is set to mobile data before using maps or other data-heavy apps abroad.
Paid plans, validity, and top-ups
Opera lists paid plans of 3GB, 5GB, and 10GB. Prices vary by destination and package, so the amount shown in the app for your trip is the relevant price. Opera’s setup guide says a paid plan is valid for 30 days after it activates in the destination, or until its data is used, whichever comes first. The launch announcement also describes a one-year validity period for a purchased plan, apparently referring to the time before activation; check the current in-app terms if you plan to buy well ahead of travel.

Opera says you can top up the installed eSIM for another destination, so a new eSIM installation is not required for each stop. Local 5G is available only where the partner network supports it; coverage and speed depend on the destination network.
Is Opera’s eSIM cheaper than other providers?
Opera says its paid plans average around 33% less than plans from six major eSIM providers. That is the company’s comparison, not an independently verified market-wide finding: Opera based it on 5GB, 30-day US plans priced on August 24, 2026. Prices vary by destination, plan size, and validity, so the figure should not be treated as a guaranteed saving for a particular trip. Compare the actual in-app offer with alternatives for your destination and data needs.

What to consider before relying on it
- Free data is a small, short-term allowance: 3GB lasts three days under the launch offer. Check eligibility and plan for what happens after that allowance expires or runs out.
- Coverage is destination-specific: Verify the destination appears in Opera’s current app list and check the plan’s terms before departure.
- It is not a replacement for your regular number: Keep your normal SIM available for calls and texts if needed, while managing its roaming settings to avoid unexpected charges.
- Installation and activation happen at different times: You can set up before the trip, but the paid plan’s stated 30-day validity begins when it connects in the destination.
- Price comparisons need context: Opera’s 33% figure reflects a company comparison of a specific US plan type and date, not every provider or destination.
Should Chrome copy the feature?
Opera’s addition is useful because it brings travel data setup into a browser many people already use and can connect the whole phone, not only browser traffic. Whether Chrome should offer the same feature is a product judgment rather than an established fact. For travelers, the practical question is whether Opera’s eligibility, destination coverage, device requirements, and plan terms fit the trip.
