Yes—OpenTitan is shipping in commercially available Chromebooks. Google announced the milestone on March 4, 2026, and said the first shipping OpenTitan part is produced by Nuvoton Technology Corporation. Dell’s Chromebook 11 CC11260 family, including the 2-in-1, is the clearest model-level lead, though the available documentation does not confirm OpenTitan in every configuration.
What changed, and when did OpenTitan start shipping?
OpenTitan moved from an open silicon design and planned Chromebook integration to commercial deployment. Google’s Open Source Blog announced on March 4, 2026, that OpenTitan was shipping in commercially available Chromebooks. The announcement identifies Nuvoton as the producer of the first shipping part.

Which Chromebook models are associated with OpenTitan?
The most specific model-level lead is Dell’s Chromebook 11 CC11260 family. Intel’s 2026 education-device material lists the Dell Chromebook 11 CC11260 and Dell Chromebook 11 CC11260 2-in-1 as ChromeOS devices, with February 2026 availability information. Dell’s support site provides regulatory documentation for those models. Google confirms that OpenTitan is shipping in commercial Chromebooks, but the cited model documents do not establish that every configuration of either model contains the chip.

Intel’s material also lists the Dell Chromebook 14 CC14260, but the available model documentation does not establish it as an OpenTitan device. A product-family listing is not proof that a specific unit or configuration contains a particular security chip.
What does OpenTitan do inside a Chromebook?
OpenTitan is a silicon Root of Trust (RoT): a hardware security anchor used to establish confidence in important operations before the rest of a device’s software is trusted. In practical terms, verified boot checks that early code is authorized and verified as the device starts. If that initial foundation is not trustworthy, later software checks have a weaker basis.

- Secure boot: establish a chain of checks for code as the device starts.
- Provisioning and chip identity: configure security material and identify a chip for device-management purposes.
- Attestation: provide information that can help another system assess a device’s identity or software state.
- Firmware updates and lifecycle management: support security across changes to firmware and the chip’s operational life, including ownership transfer.
- Cryptographic operations: accelerate functions used by security protocols and other protected operations.
The official OpenTitan FAQ lists hardware accelerators for RSA up to 4K; NIST P-256 and P-384 elliptic-curve cryptography; Brainpool; X25519 and Ed25519; AES; SHA-2 and SHA-3; and KMAC/HMAC. Google’s March 2026 announcement also describes OpenTitan as the first commercially available open-source Root of Trust to support post-quantum secure boot based on SLH-DSA. These are design and platform capability claims, not independent measurements of a Chromebook’s real-world security performance.

How is OpenTitan different from Google’s Titan security products?
OpenTitan and Google’s earlier Titan products are not interchangeable names for the same thing. OpenTitan is an open-source silicon design intended to provide a transparent hardware Root of Trust; Google’s earlier Titan products were proprietary. The OpenTitan project is stewarded by lowRISC C.I.C., an independent UK nonprofit, with Google and other partners contributing work on hardware, verification, firmware, and integration.
Open-source design can make implementation details available for review and can give manufacturers more flexibility in choosing suppliers. That does not, on its own, prove that a deployed device is more secure: the particular chip, firmware, manufacturing process, provisioning, updates, and integration all matter. The available official sources do not provide an independent benchmark demonstrating superior real-world security for OpenTitan-equipped Chromebooks.

Can you buy an OpenTitan Chromebook?
OpenTitan is built into a device as silicon; it is not an accessory a Chromebook owner can install. Google’s announcement establishes that OpenTitan is shipping in commercially available Chromebooks, and the Dell Chromebook 11 CC11260 family is the clearest model path in the available device material. That material does not verify OpenTitan in every configuration or establish current stock, retail availability, or pricing in a particular country. Check the exact configuration’s specifications or ask the seller or manufacturer to confirm the chip before buying.
