Short answer: OpenBSD 7.8 erratum 054, published September 14, 2026, fixes an integer-overflow vulnerability in shmat(4). Administrators should identify the exact release and architecture, apply the release-specific supported patch or update, and verify that the kernel and base userland remain on the same supported release. For applications that create temporary POSIX shared-memory objects, use shm_mkstemp(3) instead of constructing predictable names.

What the OpenBSD shared-memory issue is

Shared memory lets processes map the same physical pages into their address spaces. It is useful for high-throughput communication, caches, databases, multimedia pipelines and other workloads where copying data through pipes or sockets would add overhead. The same mechanism is security-sensitive: a size calculation, mapping request or object-creation race can affect memory safety or expose data to a process that should not see it.

The specific OpenBSD issue currently documented for administrators is an integer overflow in shmat(4). OpenBSD 7.8 erratum 054, dated September 14, 2026, says: “Prevent integer overflow in shmat(4).” The notice states that a source-code patch exists to remedy the problem.

The erratum does not publish a CVE identifier, CVSS score, exploit status or a complete affected-version range. Those details should not be inferred. Treat the notice as a release-specific patching requirement and consult the current OpenBSD errata page for the exact update instructions that apply to your installation.

Does every OpenBSD shared-memory use represent a vulnerability?

No. Shared memory is a supported operating-system facility, not inherently an insecure feature. Risk depends on the API being used, the release and patch level, object permissions, UID boundaries, name-generation logic and which daemons or local users can reach the interface.

OpenBSD exposes POSIX shared memory through shm_open(3), shm_unlink(3) and shm_mkstemp(3). A descriptor returned by shm_open() is suitable for mmap(2). OpenBSD forces shared-memory object modes to 0600 or 0400 and prohibits sharing between different UIDs. These defaults reduce accidental cross-user exposure, but they do not remove the need to patch the operating system or audit application logic.

Applications can still make unsafe choices. A program that creates a predictable temporary name may be vulnerable to races or object substitution before it opens or configures the object. A process can also mishandle lengths, offsets or mapping failures even when the kernel itself is patched. Administrators therefore need both release maintenance and application-level controls.

What erratum 054 changes

The affected interface

shmat(4) is the System V shared-memory attach operation. The documented defect is an integer overflow in that path. Integer overflows can cause a calculated size or address range to wrap to an unintended value, potentially producing incorrect validation or memory-management behavior. The erratum identifies the fix; it does not describe a public exploit or assign a severity score.

What the notice does not establish

  • It does not state that all OpenBSD releases are affected.
  • It does not state that a remote attacker can trigger the issue.
  • It does not state that exploitation has been observed.
  • It does not provide a CVE, CVSS rating or numeric risk estimate.
  • It does not publish a complete version range in the notice summarized here.

Do not use those unknowns as a reason to defer maintenance. If a supported erratum applies to the release you operate, apply it according to OpenBSD’s release instructions and record the result in your change log.

How to check and patch an OpenBSD host

  1. Record the installation details. Identify the exact OpenBSD release, architecture, kernel and base-userland state. Shared-memory behavior and patch instructions are release-specific, so do not rely on a generic “OpenBSD is current” label.
  2. Open the release-specific errata page. Start at the central OpenBSD errata index and follow the page for the release you actually run. Locate erratum 054 or any superseding notice. Read the complete instructions, including whether a source patch or another supported update path is required.
  3. Apply the supported fix. Use the mechanism documented for that release. The OpenBSD Handbook recommends applying syspatch(8) for supported binary fixes and maintaining third-party packages with pkg_add(1). Do not substitute an unrelated package update for a base-system or kernel erratum.
  4. Schedule service disruption deliberately. If the release instructions require a reboot, reboot during an approved maintenance window. If they require only a service restart, restart the affected daemons and verify that they return to the expected state. Never assume a running kernel has changed merely because a patch command completed.
  5. Confirm consistency. Check that the running kernel and base userland belong to the same supported release after maintenance. Keep a record of the patch date, host, architecture and verification output.
  6. Recheck after upgrades. Errata and supported-version status change over time. Review the release page after every upgrade and periodically for long-lived systems.

If you build OpenBSD from source, use the source patch and build procedure specified by the release documentation. Avoid mixing binaries, kernels or libraries from different releases unless the documentation explicitly supports that combination.

How POSIX shared memory is created and removed

shm_open() and mmap()

A POSIX shared-memory workflow normally opens or creates an object with shm_open(), adjusts its size as required by the application, and maps it with mmap(2). The returned descriptor is an ordinary handle for the mapping workflow; it is not a guarantee that the application has exclusive access or that its naming scheme is safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the narrowest mode your design permits. OpenBSD restricts shared-memory object modes to 0600 or 0400, and objects cannot be shared between different UIDs. Design cooperating processes to run under the same intended UID, and do not treat a world-readable or cross-account shared-memory design as portable to OpenBSD.

shm_unlink()

shm_unlink() removes the name from the POSIX shared-memory namespace. Coordinate unlinking with the processes that still have the descriptor or mapping; removing a name does not by itself explain when an application should stop using the mapped region. Document ownership and cleanup so a crash does not leave an administrator guessing which process is responsible.

shm_mkstemp() for temporary objects

The OpenBSD shm_open(3) manual gives a direct recommendation: “If a temporary shared memory object is desired, the shm_mkstemp() function should be preferred as it avoids several possible security holes that tend to appear in programs trying to create their own unique temporary names.” Use that function rather than concatenating a timestamp, process ID or counter into a name and hoping it is unique.

When reviewing code, verify that the template and lifecycle follow the function’s manual page, that errors are handled before mapping, and that the object is unlinked according to the application’s cleanup plan. Do not copy a naming pattern from a different operating system without checking OpenBSD’s documented semantics.

POSIX and System V designs: what to compare

Teams often inherit both POSIX and System V shared-memory code. The choice should be assessed against the operational properties that matter on the host, not by API preference alone.

Comparison axis Questions to answer Administrator action
API family Does the program use POSIX functions such as shm_open(), or System V operations such as shmat(4)? Map each process and package to the API it actually invokes; the 7.8 erratum specifically names shmat(4).
Temporary-object method Does code call shm_mkstemp(), or invent a unique name? Prefer shm_mkstemp() for temporary POSIX objects.
Permissions and UID boundaries Which UID owns the object, and which processes must access it? Design within OpenBSD’s 0600/0400 modes and same-UID sharing rule.
Name predictability Can another local process guess or race the name before initialization? Remove predictable naming and review creation, opening and cleanup as one atomic design.
Patch state Is the host running a release with the applicable erratum applied? Verify the release-specific errata status and patch the base system before relying on application controls.

Administrator hardening checklist

  • Inventory daemons, utilities and local accounts that create, open or attach shared-memory objects.
  • Enable only the daemons and system components that are deliberately required. OpenBSD security guidance emphasizes that administrators must make those choices consciously.
  • Run cooperating processes under the intended UID and avoid designs that require cross-UID shared-memory access.
  • Inspect temporary-object code for predictable names, check-then-create races and missing cleanup.
  • Prefer shm_mkstemp() for temporary POSIX objects, following its manual-page contract.
  • Apply the release’s supported base-system and kernel fixes; keep third-party packages maintained separately with the supported package tools.
  • Log patch results, reboot or restart actions, and post-maintenance verification.
  • Revisit the errata page after every release upgrade because notices and supported-version status are volatile.

Troubleshooting common cases

The patch command succeeded, but the host still reports the old kernel

Check whether the update requires a reboot. A patched file on disk does not prove that the running kernel has been replaced. Follow the release notice, reboot if directed, and verify again after the system returns.

A service cannot open an object after hardening

Confirm that the processes use the same intended UID and that the object mode is one OpenBSD permits. Check the service’s error log and creation order rather than broadening permissions; OpenBSD’s shared-memory model does not support cross-UID sharing.

Application developers want to keep a generated name

Ask why a name is required and whether the object is temporary. For temporary POSIX shared memory, replace home-grown uniqueness logic with shm_mkstemp(). If a persistent, coordinated name is genuinely required, document ownership, initialization, permissions and cleanup, and have the code reviewed for races.

The team cannot find a CVE or severity score

That information is not included in the erratum summary available here. Record the factual scope—the integer-overflow fix in shmat(4)—and use the official release notice for patch decisions instead of inventing a score or exploit assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Is OpenBSD shared memory disabled by default?

The documented interfaces are available, but availability does not mean every daemon is enabled or every application is safe. Administrators must enable system components deliberately and control which local users can invoke them.

Can two different UIDs share an OpenBSD POSIX shared-memory object?

No. OpenBSD prohibits sharing between different UIDs. Build the design around a common, intentionally chosen UID or use another IPC mechanism.

What should I do if I run OpenBSD 7.8?

Check the 7.8 release errata for erratum 054, apply the supported fix, and perform any reboot or service restart required by that release’s instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does shm_unlink() immediately invalidate existing mappings?

The function removes the namespace name; application cleanup and mapping lifetime still need to be coordinated among the participating processes. Follow the API documentation and your program’s ownership rules.

Should a predictable name ever be used for a temporary object?

It should not be the default design. The OpenBSD manual specifically recommends shm_mkstemp() because it avoids security holes common in hand-written temporary-name schemes.

Where can I find the authoritative patch instructions?

Use the central OpenBSD errata index and follow the release-specific page for the exact version and architecture in operation. The instructions there take precedence over generic procedures.
