Yes—GPT-5 was a real OpenAI launch. OpenAI announced GPT-5 on August 7, 2025, making it the default ChatGPT model and releasing related models through the API. It combined fast responses with a deeper reasoning system and automatic routing between them.
But the original GPT-5 is no longer the current ChatGPT experience. OpenAI retired GPT-5 Instant and GPT-5 Thinking from ChatGPT on February 13, 2026. As of August 9, 2026, the current generation is the GPT-5.6 family: GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra, and Luna. Which one you can use depends on whether you are using standard ChatGPT, a work account, Codex, or the API—and which plan you have.
Read OpenAI’s original GPT-5 announcement for the launch details; use the guide below for the more important distinction between what launched in 2025 and what is available now.

- GPT-5 launched on August 7, 2025. It was not a rumor or merely a new name for ChatGPT.
- At launch, GPT-5 replaced GPT-4o, o3, o4-mini, GPT-4.1, and GPT-4.5 as the default ChatGPT experience for signed-in users.
- The original ChatGPT versions, GPT-5 Instant and GPT-5 Thinking, were retired on February 13, 2026. The original GPT-5 API model remains listed as an older, deprecated model.
- GPT-5.6 is the current GPT-5 generation as of August 9, 2026. Its three main tiers are Sol for the hardest work, Terra for a balance of capability and cost, and Luna for lower-cost, high-volume use.
- GPT-5 was not the same thing as a standalone product called “ChatGPT-5.” ChatGPT is the application; GPT-5 is a model family used by ChatGPT, Codex, and the API.
What OpenAI actually released in 2025
OpenAI presented the original GPT-5 as more than one monolithic chatbot. In ChatGPT, it was a unified system consisting broadly of:
#1 Best Overall
- Professional AI & Creator Workstation: AMD Radeon AI PRO R9700 GPU with 32GB GDDR6 is engineered for AI development, professional content creation, and compute-intensive workloads.
- Massive 32GB Memory Capacity: 32GB of GDDR6 memory on a 256-bit bus provides ample bandwidth for large AI models, 8K video editing, and complex 3D rendering.
- Advanced RDNA 4 with AI Accelerators: 64 Compute Units with 3rd Gen Ray Tracing and dedicated 2nd Gen AI Accelerators for groundbreaking AI performance and visual computing.
- Professional Blower Cooling: Efficient single blower design exhausts heat directly out of the chassis, ideal for multi-GPU workstation and server configurations.
- Enterprise-Grade Thermal Solution: Vapor chamber heatsink with industrial Honeywell PTM7950 thermal interface material ensures reliable cooling under sustained professional loads.
- A fast model for ordinary questions and quick responses.
- A deeper reasoning model for difficult mathematics, coding, analysis, and multi-step work.
- A router that selected the behavior based on the task, the conversation, the tools required, and the user’s apparent intent.
That design meant a user did not always have to choose between a fast model and a reasoning model manually. ChatGPT could decide when extra reasoning was worthwhile. Users could also encourage deeper reasoning with an instruction such as “think hard about this.” After a usage limit was reached, smaller versions could handle some remaining requests.
This automatic routing was primarily a ChatGPT product experience. Developers using the API did not receive exactly the same hidden router. They selected a specific API model and configured parameters such as reasoning effort, tools, and output settings.
The original GPT-5 lineup
The launch included several names that are easy to confuse:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Name | What it meant at launch |
|---|---|
| GPT-5 | The main model generation launched on August 7, 2025. |
| GPT-5 Instant | The faster ChatGPT experience for everyday questions. |
| GPT-5 Thinking | The deeper-reasoning ChatGPT mode for harder tasks. |
| GPT-5 Pro | A higher-compute version offered to ChatGPT Pro users at launch. |
| GPT-5 mini | A smaller API model designed for lower cost and lighter workloads. |
| GPT-5 nano | An even smaller API model intended for high-volume or highly cost-sensitive workloads. |
These names should not be treated as interchangeable. “GPT-5,” “ChatGPT-5,” and “GPT-5.6 Sol” describe different things: a model generation, an informal name for a product experience, and a current model tier, respectively.
When did GPT-5 launch?
OpenAI announced and began rolling out GPT-5 in ChatGPT and the API on August 7, 2025. Free, Plus, Pro, and Team users received access as the rollout expanded, while Enterprise and Education access was scheduled to follow. Free users had lower usage limits and could fall back to GPT-5 mini after reaching their GPT-5 allowance.
At launch, OpenAI described GPT-5 as the new default for signed-in ChatGPT users, replacing several earlier options. That change was controversial because users were not only comparing benchmark results. They also cared about speed, tone, personality, writing style, and the behavior of familiar models.
OpenAI initially removed older models from the ChatGPT model picker. After substantial user complaints, including complaints about the removal of GPT-4o, OpenAI restored GPT-4o for paid users. Ars Technica reported on the GPT-4o restoration. The episode showed why “newer” does not automatically mean “preferred” for every user or task.

What changed from GPT-4?
OpenAI positioned GPT-5 as an improvement in several practical areas rather than as a single narrowly defined feature. According to its launch materials, GPT-5 was intended to improve:
- Coding: debugging, code generation, repository-level work, and following technical instructions.
- Front-end development: generating web pages and applications with stronger visual and interaction choices.
- Writing and editing: drafting, rewriting, adapting tone, and following stylistic constraints.
- Mathematical reasoning: solving difficult multi-step problems.
- Visual understanding: interpreting images, screenshots, diagrams, and other visual material.
- Health questions: providing more useful answers while still requiring professional verification.
- Instruction following: handling complicated requirements with fewer omissions.
- Tool use: planning and completing multi-step tasks involving external tools.
- Long-context retrieval: finding relevant information in larger conversations or documents.
- Reliability and tone: reducing hallucinations and excessive agreement with the user, sometimes called sycophancy.
Those are OpenAI’s product and evaluation claims, not a promise that GPT-5 would outperform every other model on every prompt. A model can be better on a controlled coding test while still producing an unwanted answer, missing an important detail, or making a poor decision in a particular workflow.

How good was the original GPT-5?
OpenAI’s launch article reported the following headline results. They should be read as OpenAI-reported evaluation results, not as universal guarantees.

Why the benchmark numbers need caution
Benchmark scores are useful signals, but they are not interchangeable. Before comparing two results, check:
- Which exact model and snapshot were tested.
- Whether tools, web access, or external retrieval were allowed.
- Whether the result came from the model creator or an independent evaluator.
- Whether the test measured exact answers, successful software patches, human preference, or another outcome.
- Whether the benchmark’s data and tests were clean and representative.
There is an important example involving coding benchmarks. OpenAI later said SWE-bench Verified had contamination and design problems and was no longer a meaningful measure of frontier coding capability. In a July 2026 audit of SWE-Bench Pro, OpenAI reported that approximately 30% of tasks were broken because of issues such as overly strict tests, underspecified prompts, low-coverage tests, or prompts that contradicted the expected behavior. See OpenAI’s audit of coding evaluations.
That does not make the original GPT-5 results meaningless. It does mean the numbers should be described accurately: OpenAI reported strong performance under particular evaluation conditions. They do not prove that GPT-5 will be the best model for every repository, programming language, user, or real-world task.
Was GPT-5 free?
At launch, yes, GPT-5 was available to Free users as well as paid users. However, “free” did not mean unlimited access to every GPT-5 capability.
- Free users had lower usage limits.
- After reaching those limits, some requests could fall back to GPT-5 mini.
- Plus and Team users received higher limits than Free users.
- Pro users received access to GPT-5 Pro, the higher-compute version.
- Enterprise and Education availability followed the initial consumer rollout.
In 2026, the access picture is different. Free users are being moved toward GPT-5.6 Luna rather than GPT-5.6 Sol, and the old GPT-5 ChatGPT modes are no longer available. Access is also different between ChatGPT, workplace accounts, Codex, and the API.
GPT-5 availability in ChatGPT as of August 9, 2026
OpenAI’s current ChatGPT support documentation lists GPT-5.6 Sol availability as follows:
| ChatGPT plan | GPT-5.6 Sol access |
|---|---|
| Free | No Sol access; the default experience is moving to GPT-5.6 Luna. |
| Go | No Sol access; the default experience is moving to GPT-5.6 Luna. |
| Plus | Medium and High reasoning. |
| Pro | Medium, High, Extra High, and Pro. |
| Business | Medium, High, Extra High, and Pro. |
| Enterprise | Medium, High, Extra High, and Pro, subject to workspace controls. |
| Logged out | No GPT-5.6 Sol access. |
See OpenAI’s current GPT-5.6 ChatGPT availability guide before subscribing or changing a workspace plan. Rollouts, regional availability, account limits, and administrator controls can affect what appears in the model picker.

Free-user changes announced for August 2026
On August 6, OpenAI announced changes that were scheduled to roll out during the week of August 10:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- GPT-5.6 Luna would become the default model for Free and Go users.
- Free users would receive unlimited text chats subject to abuse safeguards.
- File uploads, image generation or analysis, and other tools would still have limits.
- A new Think button would give GPT-5.6 Luna more time on difficult questions.
- Plus and Pro users would receive an updated GPT-5.6 Sol and a reasoning slider.
Because August 9 falls immediately before that announced rollout week, users may see different controls while the change is staged. There is also a documentation transition: OpenAI’s August 6 announcement describes updated GPT-5.6 Sol behavior for quick and deeper experiences for Plus and Pro users, while the Help Center still describes GPT-5.5 Instant as the default fast model and GPT-5.6 Sol as powering reasoning options. The safest way to identify what you are actually using is to check the live model picker and the model label on the conversation.
The current GPT-5.6 family
OpenAI launched GPT-5.6 across ChatGPT, Codex, and the API on July 9, 2026. It describes the family as three durable capability tiers:
| Model | Best fit | API model ID |
|---|---|---|
| GPT-5.6 Sol | The hardest reasoning tasks and complex professional work. | gpt-5.6-sol |
| GPT-5.6 Terra | A balance between intelligence, speed, and cost. | gpt-5.6-terra |
| GPT-5.6 Luna | Cost-sensitive, high-volume, and less demanding workloads. | gpt-5.6-luna |
The API alias gpt-5.6 routes to GPT-5.6 Sol. All three models support text and image input, text output, multilingual use, and vision through the Responses API and OpenAI client SDKs. The OpenAI API model catalog is the best place to verify current IDs, limits, and availability.
What GPT-5.6 adds
Compared with the original GPT-5 generation, OpenAI’s current developer documentation highlights:
- A
maxreasoning-effort setting. - Pro mode in the Responses API.
- Programmatic Tool Calling.
- Beta support for multi-agent orchestration.
- Persisted reasoning across turns.
- Explicit prompt-caching breakpoints.
- Improved token efficiency.
- Better visual and front-end design judgment.
- Stronger computer-use capabilities.
- More effective document, presentation, and spreadsheet generation.
These capabilities are most relevant to developers building agents and long-running workflows. A casual ChatGPT user may notice better answers, but will not necessarily see every API feature or the same routing behavior.
Using GPT-5.6 in the API
For a new application, the practical starting point is:
- Choose
gpt-5.6-solfor difficult reasoning, complex code changes, professional analysis, or tasks where quality matters more than cost. - Choose
gpt-5.6-terrawhen you need a middle ground between capability and per-token cost. - Choose
gpt-5.6-lunafor classification, extraction, routine generation, and high-volume workloads where lower cost is more important. - Use the Responses API when you need reasoning, tool calls, multi-turn workflows, or agent-like behavior.
- Test one reasoning level below the maximum before assuming that
maxis necessary. More reasoning can increase latency and cost without improving a simple task. - Set approval boundaries before allowing the model to send messages, alter production systems, spend money, delete data, or take another external and irreversible action.
OpenAI’s latest-model migration guide also recommends tracking cached tokens and cache-write tokens. GPT-5.6 cache writes and cache reads are billed differently, so caching can affect the real cost of a long-running application.
Original GPT-5 API status
The original GPT-5 API model has not simply vanished everywhere. OpenAI’s current model page lists it as a previous intelligent reasoning model and recommends GPT-5.6 for new development. It lists:

Those details come from the GPT-5 API model page and should not be confused with current GPT-5.6 pricing or ChatGPT subscription access. A deprecated snapshot may remain useful for an existing application, but new projects should evaluate the current models and plan a migration.
GPT-5.6 context and knowledge cutoff
The current API catalog lists GPT-5.6 models with a 1.05-million-token context window, a maximum output of 128,000 tokens, and a knowledge cutoff of February 16, 2026. A knowledge cutoff is not the same as access to current information. For news, live prices, recent documentation, or changing regulations, use web search or another trusted retrieval source and verify the result.
GPT-5.6 API pricing: check before publishing or budgeting
OpenAI’s official pages currently show inconsistent pricing for GPT-5.6 Terra and Luna:
| Model | One official price announcement lists | Current developer model pages list |
|---|---|---|
| GPT-5.6 Sol | $5 per million input tokens / $30 per million output tokens | $5 / $30 |
| GPT-5.6 Terra | $2 / $12 | $2.50 / $15 |
| GPT-5.6 Luna | $0.20 / $1.20 | $1 / $6 |
Because the price announcement and the current model catalog disagree for Terra and Luna, do not treat the figures above as a permanent rate card. Check the live OpenAI pricing and model pages immediately before launching a service, estimating costs, or publishing a price comparison. The Sol price is consistent across the supplied current sources.
What GPT-5 was not
Several common descriptions create the wrong expectation:
- It was not a separate app called ChatGPT-5. ChatGPT is the product; GPT-5 is a model generation inside products and developer services.
- “Available to everyone” did not mean unlimited access. At launch, free users had lower limits and paid users received more access and higher-end reasoning modes.
- It did not eliminate hallucinations. OpenAI reported lower hallucination rates and better disclosure of limitations, but users still need to check important claims.
- It was not presented as artificial general intelligence. Marketing language such as “expert-level,” “PhD-level,” “smartest,” or “state of the art” should be attributed to OpenAI, not treated as an independent scientific conclusion.
- It was not permanently the default ChatGPT model. The original GPT-5 ChatGPT modes were retired in February 2026, while GPT-5.6 became the current generation.
- A benchmark win did not make it best for every task. Real-world quality depends on the prompt, tools, context, latency, cost, and the type of work.
- The API and ChatGPT experiences were not identical. ChatGPT used product-level routing, while API developers selected models and settings directly.
Limitations, safety, and practical failure modes
Verify high-stakes answers
GPT-5 can produce a confident but incorrect answer, including when discussing health, law, finance, science, security, or software that affects real users. OpenAI says the model is less likely to hallucinate and more transparent about its limitations, but its developer guidance still recommends independent verification in high-stakes contexts.
For important work, treat the model as an assistant rather than the final authority. Check primary documents, run generated code in a safe environment, validate calculations, and have a qualified person review medical, legal, financial, or safety-critical output.
Safe completions for dual-use topics
The original GPT-5 introduced safe completions. Instead of treating every sensitive request as a simple comply-or-refuse decision, the model could provide a useful partial answer, safer high-level guidance, or defensive information while withholding dangerous operational details. This approach is especially relevant to biology, cybersecurity, and other dual-use areas.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOpenAI’s current GPT-5.6 safeguards include model-trained protections, real-time checks, monitoring, additional cyber and biology misuse classifiers, and risk-calibrated access controls. OpenAI also acknowledges that these safeguards can sometimes affect legitimate defensive or dual-use work. The current developer guidance explains the safeguards and model behavior in more detail.

Agentic workflows create new risks
A model that can use tools or operate a computer can fail in ways that are different from an ordinary chatbot. It may:
- Misunderstand the user’s actual goal.
- Make unnecessary tool calls.
- Spend too long reasoning, increasing latency and cost.
- Act on stale, incomplete, or misleading context.
- Make a technically valid but unwanted change.
- Misread a document, screenshot, spreadsheet, or web page.
- Take an external action without appreciating its consequences.
Define what the model may do automatically and what requires confirmation. Reading a file, drafting a response, or running a test in a temporary environment may be acceptable without approval. Sending an email, changing production data, deleting files, making a purchase, or publishing content should normally require an explicit confirmation step.

How to interpret the name today
If someone says they are using “GPT-5,” that can mean several different things:
- They may be referring historically to the original August 2025 launch.
- They may be using the older
gpt-5API model or its deprecated snapshot. - They may be using a current GPT-5.6 model through ChatGPT, Codex, or the API but shortening the name to “GPT-5.”
- They may be describing the broader GPT-5 generation rather than a precise model ID.
For a reproducible technical result, record the exact product, model ID, snapshot, reasoning level, tools, and date. “GPT-5” alone is not precise enough, particularly now that ChatGPT and the API have different model lifecycles.
Verdict: GPT-5 arrived, but it became a family rather than a permanent product
GPT-5 was a genuine and important OpenAI release on August 7, 2025. Its major product idea was a unified system that could answer quickly, spend more effort on hard problems, and use tools across multi-step tasks. OpenAI reported large gains in coding, mathematics, multimodal understanding, health evaluations, and instruction following.
But the original GPT-5 is now historical in ChatGPT. As of August 9, 2026, the practical question is not simply whether GPT-5 exists. It is which GPT-5.6 tier you can access, through which OpenAI product, and whether its extra reasoning is worth the added latency, usage limits, and API cost. For the hardest work, that generally means evaluating Sol; for balanced or high-volume applications, Terra and Luna may be more appropriate. In every case, benchmark scores and fluent answers still need real-world testing and human oversight.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is GPT-5 the same as ChatGPT?
No. GPT-5 is a model generation, while ChatGPT is the application that provides access to one or more models. ChatGPT used a routed GPT-5 experience at the 2025 launch, but the API let developers choose specific models. In 2026, GPT-5.6 models are used across ChatGPT, Codex, and the API.
Can I still use the original GPT-5?
The original GPT-5 Instant and GPT-5 Thinking modes were retired from ChatGPT on February 13, 2026. The original gpt-5 API model and its gpt-5-2025-08-07 snapshot remain listed as older, deprecated models, but OpenAI recommends GPT-5.6 for new development.
Which GPT-5.6 model should a developer choose?
Start with gpt-5.6-sol for the most difficult reasoning and professional tasks, gpt-5.6-terra for a capability-and-cost balance, and gpt-5.6-luna for routine, cost-sensitive, or high-volume work. Test the required reasoning level and verify the live rate card before committing to a budget.
Does GPT-5.6 have current information?
Not automatically. The GPT-5.6 API catalog lists a knowledge cutoff of February 16, 2026. For current events, changing prices, recent software documentation, or live data, use web search or another retrieval tool and verify the sources.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: GPT-5 really did launch on August 7, 2025, but the original ChatGPT model has been retired. In 2026, GPT-5.6 is the current family: Sol targets demanding reasoning, Terra balances capability and cost, and Luna targets affordable scale. Availability, limits, tools, and pricing depend on the product and plan, so check the exact model label and OpenAI’s live documentation rather than relying on the generic name “GPT-5.”
