OpenAI announced an all-equity acquisition of Jony Ive’s io Products on May 21, 2025, then merged io’s team into OpenAI on July 9. The deal gives OpenAI a design-led hardware group, but no finished device, model, price or retail launch has been announced.
The deal in plain terms
OpenAI valued its acquisition of io Products at nearly $6.5 billion. The transaction was paid in OpenAI equity rather than cash: OpenAI said it would issue a further $5 billion in stock, while it already owned 23% of io.
io was founded by Jony Ive with Scott Cannon, Evans Hankey and Tang Tan after Ive’s design firm, LoveFrom, had worked quietly with Sam Altman and OpenAI for about two years. The company was incorporated in Delaware in September 2023 and registered in California in April 2024, according to the Associated Press. AP reported that io had 55 employees and that Peter Welinder would lead OpenAI’s new hardware division.

What OpenAI is actually buying
This is primarily a purchase of a design and hardware team, not an announced consumer gadget. OpenAI’s letter says the group will work directly with its research, engineering and product organizations on products intended to “inspire, empower and enable.”

Ive and LoveFrom did not become OpenAI employees or lose their independent status. They retained independence while taking broad design and creative responsibilities across OpenAI. That arrangement lets OpenAI use Ive’s design process without turning LoveFrom into a conventional in-house product department.
OpenAI’s hardware leader will be responsible for the operating team inside OpenAI; Ive and LoveFrom provide the external design leadership. The distinction matters because the acquisition brings io’s staff into OpenAI, while Ive’s wider creative practice remains separate.
Why Sam Altman is making a design bet
OpenAI describes a gap between what modern AI can do and how people still use computers. Its models can “see, think and understand,” but most interaction remains tied to screens, apps, keyboards and familiar menus.

The proposed strategy is an AI-native product family that changes the interface itself rather than placing another chatbot inside an existing device. That could mean a different balance of voice, sensing, context and physical controls, although OpenAI has not committed to any particular interaction system.
Altman said that excellent tools require work at the intersection of technology, design and understanding people and the world, adding that he believed Ive’s team was uniquely careful about every aspect of the process. Ive said the goal was to explore how using technology might change profoundly and to recapture the delight and creative spirit he associated with his first Apple computer.
What is known about the device
The project is a family-level ambition
OpenAI has described a family of devices that could move beyond traditional screen-based interfaces. That language does not identify a product category, operating system, launch market or relationship to a phone or laptop.

The prototype was not finalized
TechCrunch reported on June 23, 2025, citing court filings, that OpenAI and io had bought at least 30 headphone sets for market research. Those purchases do not establish that the product is headphones. In testimony, Tang Tan said the prototype was “not an in-ear device, nor a wearable device.” The filing described an unfinished prototype that was at least a year away from being advertised or offered for sale at that time.

The filings described exploration of desktop and mobile concepts, along with wireless and wired, wearable and portable designs. They do not establish which concept, if any, became the final product. An analyst cited by AP offered a car, humanoid robot and AI glasses as examples of possible “physical AI embodiments,” but AP emphasized that OpenAI had not specified its device.
Is the OpenAI–Jony Ive device available?
No purchasable product is identified in the announcement or the cited court filings. There is no verified model name, SKU, launch price, final form factor or retailer listing to use for a buying decision. The headphone purchases were research activity, not a product announcement.

Axios reported on May 21, 2025, that OpenAI expected first products from the deal to be shown in 2026. That was an expectation in breaking-news coverage, not a confirmed release date, sales date or promise that a particular device would ship.
What the merger means for OpenAI’s product strategy
Hardware may become part of the core AI roadmap
By placing io inside OpenAI’s research, engineering and product organization, the company can design hardware around its models instead of adapting models to an existing phone, computer or headset. The trade-off is that OpenAI now takes on the slower manufacturing, supply-chain, regulatory and support work that software companies usually avoid.

Future coverage should distinguish among a companion device, a phone or laptop replacement, and an ambient product that relies on voice or sensing. Those choices affect battery life, connectivity, privacy, data retention and the amount of computing performed locally versus in the cloud.

Design quality will not settle practical constraints
Ive’s involvement can influence industrial design, ergonomics and the coherence of the user experience. It cannot by itself establish whether a product will be affordable, repairable, secure, comfortable for long use or compatible with existing ecosystems. None of those specifications has been announced.

When OpenAI eventually names a product, the useful questions will be concrete:
- Form factor: Is it portable, desktop-based or wearable?
- Interaction: Does it use a screen, voice, cameras, other sensors or physical controls?
- Computing role: Is it a companion to a phone or laptop, or intended to replace one?
- Privacy: What data is collected, where is it processed and how can users delete it?
- Availability: Which countries, editions, subscriptions and accessibility features are supported?
- Price and support: What is included, what requires an OpenAI plan and how are repairs handled?
Until those details are published, descriptions such as “AI glasses,” “AI headphones” or “the next iPhone” are speculation rather than confirmed specifications.
