OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT ads beyond their initial U.S. test, while preparing a separate visual ad test inside image generation. Ads may appear for Free and Go users in eligible regions, but the rollout is gradual and not every eligible user will see them. The image-generation format, announced October 5, 2026, was still planned for a later-October U.S. test as of October 7.

What changed with ads in ChatGPT?

OpenAI’s current Help Center says ads may appear for Free and Go users in select regions. Its U.S. test began February 9, 2026, and access is expanding gradually. The company announced on August 11 that ads had launched in the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea; that is a dated milestone, not a complete current list of countries. OpenAI’s Help Center explains the current ad experience.

The rollout began with conventional sponsored placements. OpenAI’s January 16 announcement described ads appearing below answers when relevant for logged-in U.S. adults using Free and Go. In March, the company said its early pilot showed no impact on consumer trust metrics, low dismissal rates, and improving relevance. Those were OpenAI’s self-reported observations, not an independent assessment. OpenAI’s January announcement and pilot updates.

Who may see ads, and what are the alternatives?

Eligibility depends on account type, region, age, and the gradual rollout. OpenAI says Free and Go users in select regions may see ads. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts do not have ads. Accounts identified as belonging to people under 18 are excluded, and Temporary Chats do not show ads. Availability and offers can vary over time and by region. OpenAI’s Help Center.

OpenAI also describes a free option without ads, but it comes with lower message limits and no access to some tools. The exact offer and restrictions may vary, so check the choices shown in your account rather than assuming every user has the same plan options.

Choice Ad experience Cost and access
Free or Go Ads may appear in eligible regions; not every eligible account necessarily sees them. Free and Go plan terms apply; limits and tools depend on the plan.
Free without ads No ads, according to OpenAI’s described option. Free, with lower message limits and no access to some tools; availability varies.
Plus or Pro Ad-free, according to OpenAI. Paid plans; check the current plan details for pricing, limits, and tools.

Where ads appear—and what may come next

Current sponsored placements

OpenAI says one or more ad units may appear under a response when there is a relevant match. The company describes the selection process as considering the current conversation’s context and intent, the ad’s landing page, title and copy, advertiser-provided context hints and targeting selections, and—if personalization is enabled—selected signals from broader ChatGPT use. If more than one eligible ad is available, OpenAI says both relevance and advertiser bids help determine which appears first. OpenAI’s Help Center describes placement and selection.

Planned visual ads in image generation

On October 5, 2026, OpenAI announced a test of visual ads during image generation for Free and Go users. The company said the test would start later in October with an initial group of U.S. advertisers. It described the ads as labeled and separate from the image being created. As of October 7, this was a planned test, not a completed rollout. OpenAI’s October 5 announcement.

This is a new format, not evidence that ads have become part of the generated image itself. OpenAI says the placement will be distinct from the image; how broadly or quickly the test will expand was not established in the announcement.

Do ads influence ChatGPT’s answers?

OpenAI says they do not: “Ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers.” The company says the ad system runs separately from the chat model and that paid placements cannot shape, rank, or alter answers. This is OpenAI’s stated design and policy; it is not an independent verification of how the system operates. OpenAI’s Help Center.

OpenAI also cautions that an ad is not a recommendation: “Ads are paid placements, and seeing an ad doesn’t mean OpenAI endorses or recommends the advertiser or its products or services.” Treat a sponsored result as advertising, not as an endorsement or answer generated by ChatGPT.

Does OpenAI share conversations with advertisers?

OpenAI says advertisers receive aggregated, non-identifying performance information, such as views and clicks—not users’ chats, chat history, memories, personal details, precise location, IP address, or sensitive information. If you choose to message an advertiser through an ad, OpenAI says that advertiser sees only the messages you send directly to it. These are OpenAI’s descriptions of its data practices. With ad personalization enabled, OpenAI says selected signals from broader ChatGPT use, including past chats and memory, may help choose ads. It says those signals remain within ChatGPT. Turning personalization off does not remove ads: selection may still use the current chat thread, while other chats, ad history, and topics are excluded. The setting therefore changes the signals used for relevance; it is not an ad opt-out.

What controls are available?

OpenAI says eligible users can disable ad personalization, dismiss an ad, ask why it appeared, and clear data used for ads. Ads are not eligible near sensitive or regulated topics, according to the company. OpenAI’s Help Center lists controls and exclusions.

  1. To change personalization, open the ad controls in ChatGPT settings and turn ad personalization off. This affects personalization signals, not whether ads can appear.
  2. To respond to an individual placement, use the ad’s dismiss or “why this ad” control, if shown.
  3. To remove data used for ads, use the clear-data control in the ad settings.

Labels and controls can change as the rollout evolves; the live Help Center and the controls displayed in your account are the best references for the current interface.

How is OpenAI expanding the advertiser platform?

The business-side rollout is distinct from the image-generation test. On May 5, OpenAI announced beta self-serve Ads Manager, expanded agency and technology partner access, CPC bidding alongside CPM buying, and conversion measurement tools. The announcement named agency partners Dentsu, Omnicom, Publicis, and WPP, and technology partners Adobe, Criteo, Kargo, Pacvue, and StackAdapt. It described conversion API and pixel-based measurement. These were the arrangements OpenAI announced in May; availability and buying conditions may have changed since then. In September, OpenAI announced Sponsored Agents being tested with selected U.S. advertisers, as well as integrations with HubSpot and Shopify. These advertiser-facing developments should not be confused with consumer ad formats. OpenAI’s September announcement.

OpenAI’s October 5 post also named conversion-data integrations with Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp; attribution partners including AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge, and Tenjin; and advanced measurement partners Fospha, Measured, and INCRMNTAL. OpenAI said it was exploring geo-based incrementality experiments with Haus, Measured, and WorkMagic. These are partner relationships and pilots described by OpenAI, not proof that independent validation is complete. DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science are participating in brand-suitability evaluation pilots that OpenAI says do not access private user conversations. OpenAI’s October 5 announcement.

What do the early advertiser results show?

OpenAI’s October 5 post reported several campaign examples from measurement partners: DV Rockerbox reported a 15.3% lower attributed cost per acquisition than a blended paid-search benchmark for WeightWatchers; WorkMagic reported that 67% of incremental purchases for wellness brand Dose came from new customers, with OpenAI saying WorkMagic found a statistically significant lift; and Triple Whale reported that 93% of Portland Leather visitors from ChatGPT Ads were new.

These are partner-reported campaign examples relayed by OpenAI, not general forecasts. The announcement did not provide sample sizes, benchmark definitions, attribution windows, or full methods alongside the figures, so they cannot establish what another advertiser should expect.
