OpenAI Dots can keep working toward a goal after you close the chat, but a 24-hour hands-on report suggests it is best treated as an assistant for clear, repetitive workflows—not an autopilot to trust without checking. In a test of a customized Dot named Mini Alfredo, inbox management, meeting scheduling, and project updates proved workable, while glitches, setup limits, and difficulty retaining context interrupted some handoffs.

What OpenAI Dots is—and what makes it different

OpenAI introduced Dots on September 29, 2026, describing them as agents that can pursue goals around the clock using their own cloud computer and browser. Unlike a standard ChatGPT exchange, a Dot can continue working after the chat is closed. OpenAI’s launch reporting also describes connections to more than 4,000 apps and access through ChatGPT, Slack, and Microsoft Teams. MacRumors’ launch-week report summarizes those announced capabilities; OpenAI’s launch page is the primary announcement.

OpenAI says users can ask questions, give feedback, or talk with a Dot by voice, and that working together helps it learn preferences. That is a product claim about personalization, not a guarantee that a Dot will retain every detail or carry context reliably between tasks.

What the first 24 hours showed

The October 2, 2026 hands-on report followed a customized Dot called Mini Alfredo through email management, meeting scheduling, and project updates. Its experience points to a practical distinction: Dots are more promising when the task is recurring and easy to verify than when success depends on preserving nuanced context across a long chain of work. The report specifically covers Gmail and Google Calendar; it does not establish equivalent hands-on results for Slack or Teams. Read the 24-hour Mini Alfredo report.

Tasks that suited the test

  • Inbox triage: Email management was among the repetitive workflows the test found workable with clear app access.
  • Scheduling support: The Dot handled meeting-scheduling work, with Google Calendar among the integrations discussed.
  • Project follow-up: Project updates fit the test’s pattern of trackable work that can be checked after the Dot acts.

Where the experience was less dependable

The report describes technical glitches, memory constraints, restrictions on setup skills, and trouble retaining context between tasks. Those limitations matter most when one step depends on information from an earlier interaction or when the Dot is expected to finish a multi-stage task without supervision. The test is a reported observation of one customized Dot over one day, not a broad reliability study.

Apps, channels, and what “4,000 connections” means

Launch reporting says Dots can connect to more than 4,000 apps and be accessed in ChatGPT, Slack, and Teams. That describes the announced reach of the product, not a finding that every app or channel was tested in the 24-hour report. The documented hands-on coverage here is focused on Gmail and Google Calendar. Check that the particular app and actions you need are available to your account before building a workflow around them.

Approvals and safety: keep consequential actions reviewable

Dots offer custom rules, approval choices, auto-review, and a read-only mode for proactive research, according to launch-week reporting and a September 2026 safety analysis. These controls can constrain what a Dot does, but they cannot make a mistaken instruction or incorrect assumption true. OpenAI Help Center guidance quoted in that analysis warns: “Your dot can make mistakes, including when following your rules.” The launch-week product review describes the controls, while Generative Labs’ safety analysis discusses their limits.

A separate CAVE-Bench discussion reports damage to correct work in 12.5% to 60% of runs, and a reduction from 41.9% to 13.2% after adding a verified-evidence rule. Those figures come from research on agents running in Claude Code, not from testing OpenAI Dots; they should not be read as Dots’ error or damage rates. They illustrate why review matters, rather than predict how Mini Alfredo or another Dot will perform.

  • Use read-only or research-only rules for exploratory work when the Dot does not need to change anything.
  • Require approval for actions with consequences, such as sending or modifying information, where the available controls permit it.
  • Inspect the result in the connected app, especially when a task depends on context from an earlier step.

Who can access Dots, and what launch-week pricing says

MacRumors reported rollout to Pro, Business Premium, and Enterprise users in selected markets, with one Dot included for eligible users at no extra charge. It also reported that conversations do not count toward ChatGPT usage limits, while tasks use plan allowances. A secondary launch-week review put ChatGPT Pro entry at $100 per month and noted regional exclusions for Pro, desktop setup, no WhatsApp channel, and no stated price for additional Dots. These are rollout-week details, not a promise of permanent availability or pricing; confirm eligibility and allowances for your region and plan in current OpenAI account information. MacRumors’ rollout report and the secondary review describe the launch-week terms.

Is OpenAI Dots worth trying?

Dots look most useful if you already have access and want help with repeatable tasks such as triaging email, supporting scheduling, or following up on project status—and you can check the outcome. Their ability to persist beyond a chat is a meaningful difference from ordinary chat assistance. The 24-hour test, however, also found context and setup friction, so the case for delegating unsupervised, sensitive, or complicated work is much weaker.

Before committing a workflow, compare alternatives on persistence after chat, cloud computer and browser access, app integrations and channels, memory, approval and rollback controls, long-task reliability, setup and regional availability, and total monthly cost. The launch reports describe intended capabilities; the Mini Alfredo account supplies limited real-use observations. Neither establishes that Dots will reliably complete every workflow or that all eligible users will see the same rollout terms.
