OpenAI announced $110 billion in new investment on February 27, 2026, from Amazon, NVIDIA and SoftBank, at a stated $730 billion pre-money valuation. The commitments were announced alongside plans to expand AI infrastructure and deploy OpenAI’s models; they are separate from the companies’ cloud, compute and other commercial arrangements.

Who invested $110 billion in OpenAI?

OpenAI’s February 27 announcement allocated the stated investment among three companies. It also said additional financial investors could join as the round progressed.

Investor Announced investment Timing or conditions Related infrastructure or commercial arrangement
Amazon $50 billion $15 billion initially, with a further $35 billion subject to conditions. A strategic AWS partnership, including distribution, cloud services and Trainium capacity.
NVIDIA $30 billion OpenAI’s announcement described a $30 billion investment; the October 2 completion detail is secondary reporting. OpenAI described planned dedicated compute using NVIDIA Vera Rubin systems.
SoftBank $30 billion Three scheduled $10 billion tranches; the first was completed April 1, 2026. The cited announcements detail the investment schedule but provide less operating-partnership information than Amazon’s.

These are announced investment amounts, not evidence that the entire $110 billion had been transferred on announcement day. The companies also described infrastructure and commercial arrangements, which should not be added to the equity-investment total.

What does the $730 billion valuation mean?

OpenAI called the $730 billion figure a pre-money valuation: the valuation before adding the newly announced investment. It is not the stated post-money valuation. Adding the $110 billion investment to the pre-money figure produces $840 billion arithmetically, but OpenAI did not identify that sum as a separately disclosed transaction valuation.

OpenAI also said that, when it announced the financing, ChatGPT had more than 900 million weekly active users and more than 50 million consumer subscribers. Those figures are company-reported statistics tied to the February 27 announcement, not independent audited measures.

How much is Amazon investing, and what does the deal include?

Amazon announced a $50 billion investment, divided into a $15 billion initial investment and a further $35 billion commitment subject to conditions. Amazon’s February 27, 2026 Form 8-K describes the latter commitment as separate from the current-round purchase. It is tied to specified milestones and/or a public listing transaction, subject to the filing’s terms. The obligations terminate if the commitment has not been invested by December 31, 2028, with possible acceleration.

AWS distribution, services and compute

Separately from the investment, Amazon and OpenAI announced a multi-year strategic partnership. They said AWS would be the exclusive third-party cloud distribution provider for OpenAI Frontier and that they would co-create a Stateful Runtime Environment available through Amazon Bedrock. OpenAI also said it would consume approximately two gigawatts of Trainium capacity through AWS infrastructure.

The companies further said they would expand an existing $38 billion, multi-year AWS agreement by $100 billion over eight years. That is a commercial cloud arrangement, not additional equity investment in OpenAI or a consumer hardware offer.

What did NVIDIA and SoftBank commit?

NVIDIA: investment and planned compute

OpenAI announced a $30 billion NVIDIA investment alongside plans for three gigawatts of inference compute and two gigawatts of training compute on Vera Rubin systems. OpenAI said the plans build on Hopper and Blackwell systems already operating across Microsoft, OCI and CoreWeave. These are company-described infrastructure plans, distinct from the investment amount.

SoftBank: three scheduled tranches

SoftBank announced a $30 billion follow-on investment through SoftBank Vision Fund 2, in preferred shares. Its February announcement scheduled three $10 billion tranches for April 1, July 1 and October 1, 2026. SoftBank’s April 15 offering memorandum confirms the first $10 billion tranche was completed on April 1.

What the announcement does—and does not—establish

OpenAI framed the financing as a way to expand infrastructure and deploy frontier models. The company’s CEO, Sam Altman, described the goal as making AI “more capable, reliable, and broadly useful.” That statement expresses the company’s ambition; the financing announcement alone does not establish that those outcomes will be achieved.
