For most readers, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is the strongest pick for long-term open-world play, because its side quests and story choices keep the world feeling active after the main plot ends. Elden Ring, especially with its Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, suits players who want open-ended exploration and demanding combat. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is a qualified third option for readers who want grounded medieval role-play. “Lasting” appeal depends on what you enjoy doing, so the useful question is what kind of engagement keeps you playing, not which map is largest.

How to choose: match the kind of engagement

Open-world RPGs keep players for different reasons. Comparing them by map size or advertised hours can be misleading, so it helps to sort them by the kind of activity that sustains play:

  • Story-led side content and consequential choices: quests that feel connected to the world and decisions that change how events and endings unfold.
  • Exploration and combat: discovering hidden areas, dungeons, and bosses, and experimenting with builds.
  • Grounded role-play: everyday activities such as wandering, tavern games, and crafting that give the setting texture between main objectives.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, for side quests and consequences

The Witcher 3 is the clearest example of the first kind. Its official product page from the European publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe describes over 100 hours of core and side-quest gameplay across a large world that includes Novigrad, Skellige, and No Man’s Land. The page also says that player choices unlock endings tailored to how the player acts. Treat the 100-plus hours as the publisher’s content estimate, not a typical completion time; how long you spend depends on how thoroughly you explore.

The game’s staying power is also reflected in sales. CD PROJEKT RED’s 2026 corporate announcement says The Witcher 3 has sold more than 60 million copies since its 2015 release. That is the developer’s own reported figure, not an independent audit.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, for grounded medieval role-play

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is a reasonable choice for readers who value a grounded medieval setting and slower, everyday activities. A 2026 GamesRadar+ ranking describes wandering the countryside, tavern dice games, and alchemy as ways to pass time away from the main plot. That ranking is an editorial description. The specifics above were not confirmed by a primary product source in this review, so treat them as a guide to the game’s style rather than a guaranteed feature list. The source also does not establish whether the game offers a formal post-story mode, so do not assume one.

What players say about lasting appeal

Community discussion points to the same two strengths. Reddit users describe The Witcher 3 as having consistent side quests alongside a main story that can be followed on its own, and say it is a game they can replay several times in a row. These comments are individual impressions rather than a representative survey, but they match the publisher’s emphasis on side content and choices.

Practical checks before you commit

  • Confirm the platform and edition you want, and check regional stock if you are buying a physical copy.
  • For Elden Ring, make sure you own the base game before buying Shadow of the Erdtree.
  • Treat published hour counts as content estimates, and plan your sessions around the kind of play you enjoy.
  • Verify release dates and preorder status for upcoming expansions close to the time of purchase.

If you want a long game built around the world and its choices, start with The Witcher 3. If you want to be tested by hard combat and hidden areas, choose Elden Ring. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is worth considering if grounded role-play is the appeal, but verify its features first.
