For an open-world RPG with a character-centered story, start with Dragon Age: Inquisition. If your priority is companions with clearly documented personal stories and reactions to your choices—and you’re open to a party-based RPG rather than an open-world one—consider Baldur’s Gate 3. The available evidence supports those different strengths, not an objective claim that either game’s companions are better than Skyrim’s.
Which RPG is the closest fit if you want an open world?
Dragon Age: Inquisition
BioWare describes Dragon Age: Inquisition as an expansive, story-driven open-world game, and highlights complex characters and difficult decisions. That makes it the clearest fit here if you want exploration and a broad narrative alongside a character-focused RPG. BioWare’s official game page provides the open-world and story description; EA’s franchise page lists it among the Dragon Age games.
Those descriptions do not, by themselves, establish specific companion mechanics such as approval systems, personal quests, recruitment options, or party banter. Choose it for the supported combination of open-world structure and character-centered storytelling, rather than on an unverified promise that its companions outperform Skyrim’s.

Which RPG is the better pick for reactive companions?
Baldur’s Gate 3
Baldur’s Gate 3 is described by its developer, Larian Studios, as a story-rich, party-based RPG. Larian says players can recruit Origin characters to fight alongside them, and that these companions have their own stories and react to player choices. Its official game page is the clearest source for that companion-reactivity pitch.
#1 Best Overall
- Welcome to the new world: taking on the role of a Hunter, players are tasked with going on a research expedition to a newly discovered continent known only as “new world”.
- Living and breathing ecosystem: utilize the surrounding environment and wildlife to your advantage;Subgenre:Action role-playing game (RPG)
- Online drop-in multiplayer: when the battle is too daunting to take on single-handedly, hail up to three other hunters to assist during quests by sending up a sos flare to a worldwide server.
- Hunt to craft new Gear: defeat monsters and collect loot from fallen foes to craft equipment and weapons styled after the monsters that have been slain.
- SEAMLESS gameplay: players and monsters can move from One map area to another freely and without loading screens whilst gameplay also dynamically transitions between night and day.
Larian’s support page on character creation adds that Origin Characters have personal backstories, quests, and motivations. Their past experiences and attitudes influence their opinions when they join the player. This is the strongest documented fit of the two for someone specifically seeking companions with defined personal histories and responses to decisions.
The distinction matters: Larian describes this as a party-based RPG, not as an open-world game. Pick it for a traveling party and companion-focused storytelling, not because it matches Skyrim’s world structure.

How to choose between them
| What you want | Best fit | What the cited sources establish |
|---|---|---|
| An open-world RPG with a character-centered story | Dragon Age: Inquisition | BioWare calls it an expansive, story-driven open-world game with complex characters and difficult decisions. |
| A party-based RPG with companions who have personal stories and react to choices | Baldur’s Gate 3 | Larian describes it as story-rich and party-based; its game and support pages describe recruitable Origin characters, their personal stories, quests, motivations, and reactions. |
| A proven winner over Skyrim on banter, romance, combat control, or companion quality | Not established | The cited sources do not provide a comparative assessment of those features or an objective Skyrim-relative verdict. |
What “better companions than Skyrim” can—and can’t—mean
Companion quality depends on what you value: personal backstory, reactions to decisions, party dynamics, or the kind of world you explore together. The official descriptions make a useful preference-based distinction: Inquisition is the open-world option with a character-centered story, while Baldur’s Gate 3 has the more explicit official evidence here for companion backstories and reactivity. That is an editorial comparison of their documented strengths, not a measured ranking against Skyrim.
The cited material does not establish which game has more companion banter, deeper romance, more recruitment choices, or stronger combat abilities. If one of those features is what you mean by “better,” these descriptions are not enough to make a confident head-to-head recommendation.
