For a continuous, choice-driven story, start with Mass Effect; for the clearest open-world RPG experience, play The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Those are different strengths, and neither means every game in its series has the same open-world structure. This editorial ranking weighs exploration, story continuity, role-playing choices, side content, and how clearly a three-game arc fits the open-world label. “Trilogy” here means three connected games in a series—not necessarily three games built around one seamless world.
How this ranking treats “open-world RPG trilogy”
The label combines two ideas that do not always line up. A trilogy can tell a connected story across three games without giving players one open world, while a series can include an excellent open-world RPG without all its entries sharing that design. The ranking therefore distinguishes a strong trilogy recommendation from a full open-world fit.
- Open-world fit: whether free-roaming exploration is a defining feature across the series or concentrated in one game.
- Continuity: whether characters, decisions, and story threads carry between installments.
- Role-playing and exploration: the importance of choices, character development, quests, and optional discovery.
- Practical starting point: whether a collection or specific installment provides a clear way in. Editions, platforms, and availability vary, so check the version and region before buying.
1. Mass Effect — best connected story trilogy, qualified open-world fit
Best for: players who want a long-form science-fiction story shaped by their decisions and relationships with a memorable crew.

GamesRadar notes that dialogue choices carry across the games, giving decisions consequences beyond a single adventure. That makes the series a particularly strong fit if “RPG trilogy” means a connected story in which your role-playing choices matter.

BioWare describes Mass Effect Legendary Edition as Commander Shepard’s trilogy. It includes the single-player base content from Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3, plus over 40 DLC items, according to BioWare’s page, which does not state a publication year for that figure. Check the platform and edition format to confirm what is available where you live.
Open-world fit: qualified. The available descriptions support Mass Effect as a story-driven RPG trilogy, but do not establish that all three games form one seamless open world. Choose it for continuity, character investment, and consequential choices; choose another entry here if free-roaming is your main priority.

2. The Witcher — best open-world installment, qualified trilogy fit
Best for: players who want a large fantasy world to explore, with substantial side quests and difficult choices.
Of the three candidates, The Witcher has the clearest open-world centerpiece. The official The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt page calls the third game an open-world RPG and describes Geralt’s search for Ciri. The game’s exploration and side quests are also singled out in GamesRadar’s RPG coverage, making it the strongest recommendation here when roaming and optional discoveries matter most.

CD PROJEKT RED describes The Witcher as a role-playing game series following Geralt of Rivia. The third game also has the major expansions Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, identified on its official page. Those details make The Witcher 3 a compelling destination on its own, but they do not establish that the earlier games have an equivalent open-world structure.
Open-world fit: qualified. The Witcher is a three-game series with a standout open-world installment, not a proven set of three uniformly open-world games. Start with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt if you want the clearest match for the open-world part of the title.

That makes Dragon Age a useful series to consider if you want a fantasy franchise arc and an open-world game within it. But the games are distinct adventures, and the sources do not support calling all three uniformly open-world. The relevant open-world recommendation is Dragon Age: Inquisition, not a claim about identical world structure across the trilogy.
Open-world fit: near-fit. Inquisition is the open-world entry; the series as a whole is better described as a franchise arc than as three matching open-world RPGs.
Which one should you play?
| Your priority | Best match | Why | Open-world qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Choices carried through a connected three-game story | Mass Effect | GamesRadar says dialogue choices carry forward, and BioWare packages the three Shepard games in Legendary Edition. | Strong trilogy; not established as one seamless open world. |
| Free-roaming fantasy exploration and side quests | The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt | The official page identifies it as an open-world RPG, and GamesRadar highlights its side quests and exploration. | Strongest single open-world installment; earlier games are not established as equivalent. |
| Fantasy role-playing with an open-world entry | Dragon Age: Inquisition | BioWare describes Inquisition as open-world, and its choices shape the experience. | Open-world design is supported for Inquisition, not uniformly for all three games. |
For other RPGs, compare storytelling, exploration, combat, and world-building rather than treating “open world” as a complete measure of role-playing quality. Bandai Namco’s RPG guide offers those dimensions as useful ways to assess what kind of game suits you; its broad genre observations are not a rule that every RPG must follow.
Why Fallout 4 is not ranked as a trilogy
Fallout 4 is useful context for readers looking for a standalone open-world RPG, but it does not establish a three-game trilogy entry for this list. Bethesda’s Fallout 4 page describes the game as open-world and says its Anniversary Edition combines the base game, six official expansions, and more than 150 Creation Club items. Bethesda also reports over 200 “Best Of” awards, including DICE and BAFTA Game of the Year awards, but the page gives no award year; that count is not a measure of trilogy quality.
