Open USD (OUSD), a stablecoin intended for business money movement, went live on September 30, 2026, after Open Standard announced the project in June. The companies named in the launch are not all doing the same thing: Bridge says it currently issues OUSD, Stripe has integrated it into business products, Visa announced an institutional stablecoin platform beginning with OUSD, and Coinbase is listed as a founding company. The available launch announcements do not establish a broadly available Coinbase product for OUSD.

What is Open USD?

Open USD is a U.S.-dollar stablecoin project from Open Standard, an independent company formed around a group of payments, commerce and technology companies. Its stated purpose is to provide infrastructure for businesses moving money over the internet, rather than to introduce a consumer-facing coin or wallet.

Open Standard announced the project on June 30, 2026. Bridge and Stripe announced the live launch on September 30. Bridge’s launch announcement says OUSD is available on Base, Ethereum, Solana and Tempo. These are separate blockchain networks; the network on which a business uses a token can affect its integration and transfer process.

Open Standard’s June announcement said more than 140 businesses had signed up to use or support the project at that time. Stripe described OUSD as supported and distributed by its founding companies and more than 200 network partners in its September 30 launch blog. Those are figures from different announcements and dates, not a current count of active users or proof of token circulation.

What are Stripe, Visa and Coinbase doing?

The company names in the headline refer to distinct roles, not to three co-issuers. The following reflects the companies’ launch announcements and stated availability as of October 3, 2026.

Company Role stated in the announcements Availability described
Bridge Bridge says Bridge Building Inc. currently issues OUSD. Bridge announced OUSD live on Base, Ethereum, Solana and Tempo.
Stripe Announced support for OUSD across business products, including Treasury, Issuing, Global Payouts, Crypto Onramp and Payments. Stripe announced product support on September 30; exact eligibility can depend on the product and business.
Visa Announced a Stablecoin Platform for institutions to mint, move and manage stablecoins, beginning with OUSD. Visa said the platform was initially available for beta testing with selected clients.
Coinbase Listed by Open Standard as one of the project’s founding companies. Coinbase Chief Business Officer Shan Aggarwal also commented on the project. The cited announcement does not establish a specific customer-facing Coinbase OUSD feature or general availability.

This distinction matters: Visa’s announcement is about an institutional platform, not a general Visa wallet or a consumer stablecoin service. Coinbase’s founding-group participation is not evidence that Coinbase issues OUSD. Bridge’s statement identifies Bridge Building Inc. as the current issuer.

How does OUSD work with Stripe?

Stripe says businesses can use OUSD in Treasury, Issuing, Global Payouts, Crypto Onramp and Payments. Its September 30 blog says OUSD on Tempo is the default stablecoin configuration on Stripe. That default does not mean every Stripe customer must use OUSD or convert existing balances: Stripe says it continues to support alternatives and does not require conversion.

Stripe’s description of a default is a product configuration, not a claim that OUSD is the only supported stablecoin or network. Businesses should check the relevant Stripe product’s current documentation and eligibility before relying on a specific workflow.

Which terms did Open Standard announce?

Open Standard’s June 30 announcement described a proposed operating model with three notable features:

  • Businesses would be able to mint and redeem OUSD without charge or artificial volume limits.
  • Partners would receive reserve earnings, less a small management fee intended to cover operating costs.
  • Open Standard would operate as an independent company with a board made up of partners.

These are announced design principles and terms, not independent verification of how the system operates. The launch material reviewed does not establish the reserve asset mix, custodian, independent attestation schedule, binding redemption rights, or realized returns. A stated fee policy or reserve-earnings model should not be treated as proof of a particular yield for businesses.

Who issues OUSD, and what about Bridge’s bank?

Bridge says OUSD is currently issued by Bridge Building Inc. Bridge National Trust Bank is a separate entity. Bridge says that bank is not operational and does not issue OUSD. It also says the bank’s conditional approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency is not final charter approval and does not authorize the bank to issue OUSD under the GENIUS Act.

Accordingly, the bank’s conditional approval should not be read as a change in OUSD’s issuer or as evidence that a national trust bank is already operating the coin.

What should a business verify before using OUSD?

The launch announcements describe the project’s purpose, supported networks and partner roles, but they do not settle every question relevant to safety, liquidity or access. Before integrating OUSD, a business should verify:

  • Which network and product workflow it intends to use, and whether that route is available to its account and jurisdiction.
  • The applicable minting and redemption terms, including who can redeem, settlement timing and any conditions outside the announced no-fee design.
  • Current reserve composition, custody arrangements and the frequency and scope of independent reserve reporting.
  • Whether the business’s counterparties can receive and use OUSD on the same network.
  • The operational and legal responsibilities of the issuer and the platform providers in the specific transaction.

The launch sources do not provide a complete geographic eligibility matrix or independently measured circulation and transaction-volume figures. Partner counts should not be used as a substitute for adoption data.

What is established about the market forecast?

Open Standard’s June announcement quoted BNY Chief Product and Innovation Officer Carolyn Weinberg predicting that stablecoins alone may grow to $1.5 trillion by 2030. That is her attributed forecast, not a known future outcome or an independently evaluated estimate. It provides context for the launch’s business-payments ambitions, but does not by itself establish demand for OUSD.
