ClamAV, YARA, and behavioral analysis detect different kinds of evidence; none is a universal winner. ClamAV scans files against maintained and custom signatures, YARA matches analyst-defined patterns, and behavioral analysis observes a sample running in an isolated environment. They can be combined, but the available documentation does not establish a controlled head-to-head detection rate.
How the three approaches differ
| Approach | Main job | Evidence it produces | What it needs | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ClamAV | Scan files against maintained and locally supplied signatures | Signature matches and scan results | Signature databases or custom signatures | Its scope and signature coverage do not make it a full endpoint-security suite |
| YARA | Match files or data against authored pattern rules | Pattern and condition matches | Useful rules that someone defines and maintains | Rule quality, compatibility, and false-positive review |
| Behavioral analysis | Observe a sample while it executes in a controlled environment | Process, file, memory, network, and screenshot artifacts | A suitable isolated execution environment and interpretable telemetry | Execution is nondeterministic and affected by the environment |
This is a qualitative comparison, not a ranking of detection rates. The cited project documentation does not provide a controlled benchmark comparing trojan detection by these approaches.
What ClamAV can and cannot tell you
It is a scanning toolkit, not a complete endpoint suite
ClamAV describes itself as an open-source antivirus toolkit designed especially for mail-gateway scanning, and its documentation says it is “not a traditional anti-virus or endpoint security suite.” Treat it as a file-scanning component rather than a complete endpoint-protection stack. See the ClamAV documentation.

ClamAV supports multiple signature formats, including hash-based signatures, body-based matching, specialized formats, and logical signatures that combine subsignatures using expressions. Its digitally signed CVD signature database is maintained by Cisco Talos and updated through freshclam. The signature documentation describes these formats and database updates: ClamAV signature formats.

Hash signatures are useful for identifying a known, unchanged file. ClamAV documents that file-hash signatures target static malware and that changing even one byte breaks an exact hash match. That limitation applies to hash matching, not to every signature format ClamAV supports. Logical signatures provide a way to combine evidence rather than relying only on one exact whole-file hash; details are in the logical signature documentation.
What YARA adds
Rules match patterns, not observed execution
YARA lets analysts describe textual or binary patterns and combine them with boolean conditions. A rule can identify a pattern associated with a trojan family without depending solely on an exact whole-file hash, provided the relevant pattern remains present. A match means the rule’s conditions were met; it does not mean the sample was run or its behavior observed. See the YARA documentation.

- HARDWARE PLUS SECURITY SERVICES: FortiGate-60F Firewall Appliance bundled with 1 year of FortiCare Premium and FortiGuard Unified Threat Protection.
- UNIFIED THREAT PROTECTION (UTP): Secures against advanced online threats with comprehensive web filtering and anti-botnet technologies.
- OPTIMIZED FOR MEDIUM-SIZED BUSINESSES: Tailored for businesses needing robust security without the infrastructure of larger enterprises.
- RELIABLE CUSTOMER SUPPORT: FortiCare Premium ensures high-quality support and service continuity.
- EFFECTIVE PROTECTION: Employs advanced filtering technologies to safeguard against sophisticated threats.
ClamAV accepts only a subset of YARA
ClamAV can read .yar and .yara files, but its embedded YARA support is not full compatibility. The documented constraints include unsupported modules and imports, unsupported global rules and external variables, a maximum of 64 strings per rule, and a requirement for at least one literal, hexadecimal, or regular-expression string. Check the compatibility documentation for the installed ClamAV release before relying on an existing rule set: ClamAV YARA rule support.

It adds runtime evidence
A sandbox executes a sample in a controlled system and records what happens during that run. Cuckoo Sandbox documentation lists possible results such as process-call traces, created, deleted, or downloaded files, memory dumps, network packet captures, and screenshots. These records can help an analyst investigate what a sample attempted under the lab’s conditions. See the Cuckoo sandboxing documentation and Cuckoo results documentation.

A quiet run does not establish that a file is safe
Sandbox results depend on whether the sample runs and whether the environment triggers the behavior of interest. Cuckoo warns that automated malware analysis is nondeterministic: execution in a virtualized system may not reproduce behavior on a native system, and a sample may fail to run. Conditions required to trigger behavior may also be absent from the lab. Interpret a report alongside static inspection, ClamAV results, YARA matches, and knowledge of the sandbox environment; “no behavior observed” is not proof of benignity.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to combine the approaches
- Scan the file with ClamAV. Use current signatures and note the exact detection or absence of a match. A clean scan is evidence from that scan, not a safety guarantee.
- Apply relevant YARA rules. Scan the file or extracted artifacts with rules suited to the investigation. Review what each matching condition means, and verify compatibility if using ClamAV’s embedded YARA support.
- Use an isolated sandbox when runtime evidence is needed. Submit the suspicious item only to a properly configured, isolated environment. Do not execute untrusted samples on a production machine; sandbox design and network policy require care.
- Correlate the evidence. A signature match, a YARA match, and observed runtime activity answer different questions. Consider the file, rules, execution conditions, and telemetry together rather than treating any single result as a verdict.
This sequence is a practical way to gather complementary evidence, not a claim that a particular combination has a measured detection uplift. The cited sources do not establish a universal best configuration or numeric detection-rate comparison.
