The Open Mainframe Project announced Zowe Long Term Support (LTS) V3 on October 3, 2024, positioning it as an actively maintained release for organizations building and operating modern applications on IBM z/OS. Zowe V3 adds and upgrades tools for developers and administrators, but teams planning to move from V2 should check compatibility carefully: V2 is now in Maintenance LTS, and some services and APIs have been archived or removed.
What is Zowe V3?
Zowe is an open-source, integrated and extensible framework for z/OS. It provides developers and operators with modern interfaces for working with mainframe resources and services. Its components include a desktop, command-line tools, APIs, and software development kits (SDKs) that let applications interact with z/OS.
V3 is a major release aimed at enterprise modernization and mission-critical application and data processing environments. It is not a replacement for z/OS itself; it is a framework and set of tools that can make z/OS resources more accessible to people and applications using contemporary development workflows.
Is Zowe V3 supported, and how long is it supported?
Yes. The Open Mainframe Project’s published lifecycle identifies V3 as the Active LTS release and says it remains an LTS release until Q1 2027. Active LTS can receive regular minor releases containing features, fixes, and security patches. Zowe V2 has moved to Maintenance LTS, which is limited to critical fixes and security patches.
#1 Best Overall
These lifecycle terms describe project maintenance, not a guarantee that every third-party product or local configuration is compatible, nor a statement of commercial support terms. Organizations that need vendor-backed assistance should confirm which Zowe components, versions, and operating environments a provider covers.
What changed between Zowe V2 and V3?
| Area | Zowe V2 | Zowe V3 |
|---|---|---|
| Lifecycle | Maintenance LTS: critical fixes and security patches | Active LTS: regular minor releases may include features, fixes, and security patches; published LTS period runs until Q1 2027 |

| Core technology | Earlier underlying technology included the API Mediation Layer’s Netflix Zuul gateway | Refreshed core technology, including an Angular update for Zowe Desktop and replacement of Zuul with Spring Cloud Gateway in the API Mediation Layer |
| Archived or removed items | Some APIs and services were deprecated before V3 | The announcement says the IMS service and current CLI extensions were archived; previously deprecated APIs and services were removed |
More IDE and SDK options
Explorer for IntelliJ and the Node.js SDK became part of Zowe Core in V3. The Java and Kotlin client SDKs reached General Availability, making them established options for supported client development rather than preview offerings. This expands the set of tools and languages represented in the core project, but it does not by itself establish compatibility with every existing plugin or application.

Simpler server-side setup
The new Server Installation Wizard is intended to make server-side installation and configuration easier. It is an installation aid, not evidence that every environment can be configured without planning: administrators still need to account for their own z/OS environment, security requirements, and installed integrations.
Updated technology and dependency practices
The release refreshed core technologies. Zowe Desktop received an Angular update, and the API Mediation Layer replaced its Netflix Zuul gateway with Spring Cloud Gateway. The project says it monitors and proactively upgrades dependencies to reduce exposure to outdated or vulnerable components. That practice helps manage dependency risk, but it should not be read as a guarantee that a deployment is vulnerability-free; operators still need to apply releases and follow their organization’s security processes.

Archived components and removed APIs
The announcement says the IMS service and current CLI extensions were archived, with IBM working on replacements. The V3 features information also notes that previously deprecated APIs and services were removed. Teams that depend on these pieces should identify them before upgrading and verify the status and migration path for any replacement they need. The available announcement does not specify a replacement release date.
Should your organization upgrade to Zowe V3?
V3 is the active LTS line, so it is the release to assess for teams that want ongoing feature development as well as fixes and security patches. An immediate upgrade is not automatically the right choice for every deployment, especially where scripts, integrations, or operational procedures depend on V2 behavior.
Rank #4
Plan an upgrade assessment
- Inventory your installation. Record the Zowe components, APIs, services, CLI extensions, and third-party integrations your teams actually use.
- Check for removed or archived dependencies. Pay particular attention to the IMS service, current CLI extensions, and APIs or services that had already been deprecated.
- Review compatibility with your workflows. Test automation, plugins, client applications, and operational procedures against V3 before making it the production standard.
- Evaluate the installation route. Consider whether the Server Installation Wizard fits your environment and configuration process.
- Choose a transition schedule. If V2 automation needs more assessment, continuing on V2 may be appropriate while it is in Maintenance LTS; account for its narrower maintenance scope in that decision.
A later official Zowe article describes a V3 CLI search capability that finds strings across data sets, members, and job spool files and returns matching locations with line numbers. That can help teams locating information across mainframe content, but it does not remove the need to validate existing V2 automation for compatibility.
How Zowe supports z/OS modernization
Zowe’s modernization role is to provide a framework through which developers and operators can use modern interfaces with z/OS resources and services. Its IDE explorers, CLI, APIs, and SDKs serve different workflows: interactive exploration in an IDE, command-line automation, and application development against client libraries. The framework can connect those workflows to mainframe systems, but it does not itself modernize an application’s architecture or guarantee that a particular workload will perform better.

The project’s 2024 adoption figures indicate broad use, though each figure measures a different thing and should not be treated as a single adoption rate:
- Open Mainframe Project reported more than 100,000 Zowe CLI downloads in 2024.
- It reported more than 1 million Zowe Explorer for VS Code downloads and more than 150,000 active users in 2024.
- It reported nearly 10,000 Zowe Explorer for IntelliJ downloads in 2024.
- It reported nearly 50,000 unique visitors to Zowe Docs in 2024.
- It reported nearly 1,000 server-side downloads for the newly released Zowe V3 in 2024.
- The Open Mainframe Project cited the Arcati Mainframe Yearbook 2024 estimate that 85% of mainframe organizations were expected to have adopted Zowe or be adopting it by the end of 2024.
- As of October 2024, the Open Mainframe Project said 77 products had implemented Zowe extensions and earned conformance badges.
Downloads, active users, visitors, a forecast of organizational adoption, and product conformance are distinct measures; none alone shows how deeply or uniformly Zowe is used across an organization. The project also describes conformance badges as an indicator that products implement Zowe extensions, not a guarantee of interoperability with every local deployment.

Zowe itself is open source, and the project points users to its GitHub, documentation, and community resources. For comprehensive commercial support, the project identifies Broadcom, IBM, Rocket Software, and IBA Group. Coverage, geography, eligibility, and support terms can differ, so organizations should confirm those details directly with a provider before relying on a support arrangement.

Participation in the project and comprehensive support provision are separate roles.
What to take from the V3 release
Zowe V3 is the active LTS release, with expanded IDE and SDK coverage, a new server installation wizard, and refreshed underlying technology. Its upgrade value depends on whether those capabilities meet your needs and whether your existing services, APIs, extensions, and automation are compatible. Because V2 is in Maintenance LTS and V3 removes or archives some older components, a dependency inventory and compatibility assessment are central to a safe transition.
