If you only need an elevated Windows Terminal window, try holding Ctrl+Shift while choosing Open Terminal Here in File Explorer. Windows Terminal v1.18.1421.0 release notes document that gesture. It launches an elevated session but does not add a separate “(Admin)” menu label. To add that distinct entry, a community tutorial provides a Registry-based method; review its registry file before merging it and use it only if you are comfortable making a system change.

Choose between an elevated launch and a separate menu entry

Option What it does Trade-off
Ctrl+Shift with “Open Terminal Here” Requests an elevated Terminal session from the existing context-menu action. Documented in the Windows Terminal v1.18.1421.0 release notes; it does not create a separately labeled “(Admin)” entry. Windows Terminal v1.18.1421.0 release notes
Registry-created “Open in Terminal (Admin)” Adds a distinct entry for a selected folder or folder background; the community recipe includes a default-profile choice and submenu options for Command Prompt and Windows PowerShell. Requires a Registry change and administrator access. The method is from a community tutorial, not a Microsoft configuration guide. ElevenForum tutorial
Run Terminal as administrator separately Opens an elevated Terminal; you can then navigate to the target folder. Does not open directly in the folder you right-clicked. The Windows Terminal FAQ describes a taskbar right-click route. Windows Terminal FAQ

Try the built-in elevated-launch gesture first

Windows Terminal’s v1.18.1421.0 release notes say that “Open Terminal Here” supports Ctrl+Shift to launch an elevated session. Use the gesture with the existing context-menu action. The release note documents the feature for that version; if it is unavailable, check the Terminal version installed on your PC. Windows Terminal v1.18.1421.0 release notes

Add a separately labeled “Open in Terminal (Admin)” entry

The community tutorial by Brink provides add and remove Registry files for a distinct elevated entry. It creates keys beneath HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTDirectoryshellOpenWTHereAsAdmin, adds the menu label and elevation shield, and defines commands that start Windows Terminal with elevation in the selected directory. Its submenu includes the default profile, Command Prompt, and Windows PowerShell; the tutorial also describes adding other installed profiles.

  1. Open the tutorial and inspect its current files. Use the tutorial’s add/remove options at ElevenForum. This is third-party Registry content, so inspect the add file before merging it rather than treating it as a Microsoft-provided configuration.
  2. Make sure you can approve elevation. The tutorial says administrator access is required to add, remove, and use the entry. Registry changes affect Windows configuration; do not merge a file whose contents you do not understand.
  3. Use the tutorial’s add option and approve the prompts. The exact Registry commands and file contents are maintained on that tutorial page; follow its current directions rather than relying on copied Registry payloads.
  4. Open the folder’s classic context menu. Right-click a folder or its background, choose Show more options, and select the added “Open in Terminal (Admin)” entry or a profile submenu item. The tutorial says the entry appears under Show more options by default.

The standard Windows 11 “Open in Terminal” action opens a normal Terminal session, according to the community tutorial; the added Registry entry is intended for an elevated launch. The tutorial’s instructions are for directories and folder backgrounds, not a universal replacement for every Explorer context menu.

If “Open in Terminal” is missing

Check how Windows Terminal was installed. Microsoft’s distribution comparison lists the built-in context-menu integration for packaged and preinstallation-kit distributions, but not for unpackaged or portable distributions. The same comparison notes that unpackaged distributions do not receive automatic updates. This describes the documented distribution options; availability can vary with the installation you use. Why command-line windows open in Terminal

On Windows 11 22H2, Windows Terminal became the default host for console windows, including Command Prompt and Windows PowerShell. If you prefer the older Windows Console Host behavior, Microsoft documents a setting under Settings > System > Advanced and a Windows Terminal startup setting for selecting Windows Console Host. These host preferences are separate from adding an elevated File Explorer menu entry. Microsoft Support: Command Prompt and Windows PowerShell are now default in Windows Terminal
