For cooking over a real fire, the choice mostly comes down to two things: the material (cast iron or stainless steel) and how much weight you can carry. Lodge’s Wanderlust Set is a cast-iron kit that Lodge lists as compatible with a campfire, but its listed weight points it toward car camping and camp kitchens where weight is acceptable. Primus’s CampFire Cookset is a stainless-steel, nesting set that is far lighter and suits trips where you carry your gear. Neither is a universal best. The comparison below is based on manufacturer product listings and general campfire-cooking guidance, not on side-by-side cooking tests.

Start with your trip style

The right set depends less on brand than on how you travel and what you plan to cook.

  • Car camping or a fixed camp kitchen: Cast iron is practical. Pack weight matters less when the gear rides in the vehicle, so the heavier, multi-piece Lodge format is a reasonable fit.
  • Short walk-ins or trips where you carry everything: Stainless steel makes more sense. The Primus set is listed at about 3.6 lb, which is far easier to shoulder than the Lodge set.
  • Stews, baking or feeding a group: Look at Dutch oven capacity and the suspension gear that goes with it, not just the skillet and pot count. The section on Dutch ovens below covers this.
  • Beginners: Start with a small set and simple meals. Campfire heat is less controllable than a stove, so a compact kit you can practise with is more useful than a large one you cannot manage.

The sets side by side

The table lists the values each maker publishes. Where a listing does not state a detail, the cell says so rather than filling the gap.

The two named sets are not configured alike. The Lodge pieces are cast iron and include a 3.2-quart combo cooker, while the Primus pieces are stainless steel and include a 3-litre pot. The weight gap therefore reflects both material and layout, so it should be read as a trip-planning figure rather than a controlled performance comparison.

The sets in more detail

Lodge Wanderlust Set

This is the set to consider if you want cast iron and do not mind carrying it. Its three pieces cover a small skillet for quick meals, a larger dual-handle camper pan for bigger batches, and a combo cooker that can handle one-pot dishes. Lodge’s campfire compatibility statement is the reason it appears here; the maker states it for this named set, so it is a clearer starting point than a generic camp kit with no fire-use wording.

Primus CampFire Cookset Stainless Steel Large

This is the set for readers who need a pot, a saucepan and a frying pan without the bulk. The 18/8 stainless steel construction, folding handles and nesting design are the features that matter for packing. Primus describes the set for open-fire or camp-stove use, so it fits readers who want one kit for both cooking styles. The listing does not describe handle temperatures over a fire, so check the instructions that come with the set before placing it directly on coals.

Camp Chef 6-Piece Cast Iron Set

Camp Chef’s set is a cast-iron alternative for readers who want Dutch-oven cooking and a range of skillets. Its listing did not state a fire-use claim or weight in the material reviewed, and it showed sold out when checked. Treat it as a candidate to verify rather than a confirmed fit for open-fire use, and confirm stock and fire-use guidance before buying.

Cast iron or stainless steel over a fire?

  • Weight: Cast iron is the heavier option in these examples. If you walk into camp, stainless steel reduces load considerably.
  • Piece count and function: The Lodge set offers a larger range of cast-iron cooking surfaces. The Primus set covers pot, saucepan and pan with less bulk.
  • Packing: The Primus set nests, which matters more in a crowded pack or vehicle box than the piece count suggests.
  • Handling: Check handle design on any material. Lodge’s listing does not describe its handle arrangement beyond the dual-handle camper pan, so handle with tools in any case.

  1. Confirm that the manufacturer says the item is intended for campfire or open-fire use. Do not assume that a camping set or a coated household pan is fire-safe.
  2. Inspect the whole item, including handle grips, knobs and fittings, for rubber, silicone or plastic. Outdoor Life’s campfire-cooking guide warns that these parts can melt at campfire temperatures.
  3. Decide whether the cookware will sit directly in the fire or be suspended over it. Lodge says its seasoned Camp Dutch Ovens are designed for both, with suspension using a camp tripod or its Fire and Cook Stand.
  4. Use hot-cookware handling tools at all times, and follow the product’s own instructions for placement.

Dutch ovens and suspension gear

A camp Dutch oven is the most flexible piece for stews, baked dishes and meals for several people. Lodge’s guidance says it can be used directly in a fire or suspended over one with an appropriate tripod. Lodge names three accessories that connect to this use: the Lodge Camp Dutch Oven, the Adjustable Camp Tripod, and the 4-in-1 Camp Dutch Oven Tool. If you plan to hang a pot over the fire, buy the tripod and tool at the same time as the oven so the setup matches the pot.

What are the best camping meals to cook over an open fire?

Outdoor Life recommends that beginners start with simpler meals, because heat from a campfire is harder to regulate than heat from a stove. Foods that need fine temperature control are more challenging. One-pot dishes, such as stews cooked in a Dutch oven, are a practical starting point, since they tolerate uneven heat and can be adjusted by moving the pot.
