Use an online travel agency (OTA) if you want to compare options and are comfortable managing the booking. Consider a traditional travel agent if you want tailored advice or help coordinating a complicated itinerary. Neither option is automatically cheaper or better: compare the total price, who is actually selling the trip, the cancellation terms, and who will handle changes.
What is the difference between an online travel agency and a traditional travel agent?
An OTA lets you search for or book travel through a website or app. A traditional travel agent works with you directly, usually by phone, email, or in person, to plan or book travel. But the channel alone does not tell you who is legally selling the trip or responsible for your booking.
Some websites sell travel and contract with you; others compare offers or introduce you to a separate seller. The Japan Tourism Agency distinguishes these roles and warns that contract forms and conditions vary by booking site. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission likewise recommends establishing whether you are buying from the app or site itself or from the airline or resort. Check the terms for the named seller and contracting party before you pay.
For a site that redirects you elsewhere, confirm which company takes payment and whose terms govern the booking. A traditional agent can also act in different capacities, so ask whether the agent is selling the service or arranging it with a separate provider.

Is it cheaper to book through a travel agent or online?
There is no reliable basis here for saying either route is always cheaper. Compare the final amount for the same itinerary and conditions—not just the first price shown. Account for mandatory fees, taxes, and what is included, such as baggage or other services. The U.S. FTC’s fee guidance covers lodging-fee disclosure requirements and applies to third-party platforms and travel agents within its scope.
Also compare the cost of making changes or canceling. A lower initial fare may come with stricter terms, while an agent may charge a separate service fee. Ask for any agent fee in writing and check whether it is refundable if you cancel. The relevant comparison is the total cost for the flexibility and support you actually need.

When should you book online, and when should you use an agent?
Online booking may suit you when
- Your trip is relatively straightforward and you are comfortable comparing options and reading booking terms.
- You want to manage reservations directly through a website or app and can keep track of separate confirmation numbers and providers.
- You have checked who the seller is, what the price includes, and how to request help if plans change.
A traditional agent may suit you when
- Your itinerary has several moving parts, providers, or destinations that you would rather have one person help coordinate.
- You value individualized advice or want assistance weighing options before booking.
- You have confirmed the agent’s fees, role, credentials, and process for handling changes.
These are practical distinctions, not guarantees of price or service quality. An online provider may offer assistance, and an agent’s support depends on the specific business and booking terms.
How to compare a booking before you pay
- Identify the seller and contract party. Read the booking terms to see whether the website, agent, airline, hotel, or another provider is selling the service. If a site redirects you, verify the destination seller before entering payment details.
- Compare the full price and inclusions. Check taxes, mandatory fees, baggage, meals, seat selection, and any other service that matters to your trip. The FTC recommends checking for extra costs and obtaining cancellation and refund policies before paying.
- Read change, cancellation, and refund rules. Find the applicable terms for each flight, hotel, or other component, including deadlines, penalties, and whether a refund goes through the intermediary or provider.
- Confirm how support works. Note the contact method and operating hours, and ask who will submit a change or refund request. Save the terms, itinerary, receipts, and confirmation numbers.
- Check the agent or provider’s credentials where relevant. Licensing and registration requirements depend on location. Canada’s federal Office of Consumer Affairs recommends checking local requirements where applicable, as well as training, experience, years in business, and professional association membership.
- Check whether package-travel protections apply. Do not assume that putting several bookings on one website makes the trip a legal package. The European Commission describes protections for package holidays and certain linked travel arrangements; whether they apply depends on the transaction and relevant EU rules.
Who do you contact if an online travel agency booking changes?
Start with the company that sold or arranged the booking, as identified in your confirmation and terms. If you booked through an OTA or another agent, U.S. Department of Transportation guidance says to contact that agent directly about a refund for the airline ticket. For other requests, the booking terms should explain whether the intermediary or the airline, hotel, or other provider handles the change.

Keep the booking confirmation and any notices from the provider, then make the request through the stated support channel. If the intermediary cannot resolve it, contact the provider as well and retain a record of both conversations. Using an intermediary can affect the practical route for help, but it does not by itself remove rights that apply under the relevant law.
What happens if a flight is canceled or significantly changed?
The remedy depends on the jurisdiction, the nature of the disruption, and the ticket and booking terms. For U.S. airline travel, DOT explains that passengers may be entitled to a refund for certain significant delays or schedule changes if they decline the alternative travel or credit. A passenger who bought through an OTA or other agent should contact that agent about the refund.

Do not assume the same rule applies in another country or to every itinerary. For example, EU package-travel rules may provide protections when a booking qualifies as a package, but a set of separate reservations does not automatically qualify. Check the rules that apply to your trip and the terms for each booking before accepting a substitute itinerary or credit.
How can you check whether a travel agent is reputable?
Requirements vary by location. In Canada, some jurisdictions require travel agents or agencies to be licensed or registered, so check the rules where the business operates. Canada’s Office of Consumer Affairs also suggests reviewing an agent’s training, experience, time in business, and membership in professional associations.

Ask for the agent’s role, fees, and cancellation and refund arrangements in writing. If the agent offers travel insurance, verify that the seller is licensed where required; the U.S. FTC advises consumers to check insurance licensing. Consumer Affairs Tasmania also provides guidance on online-provider checks and agent obligations under Australian consumer law, which applies in its own jurisdiction.
