Use a countdown timer when you need to reach a set duration; use a stopwatch when you need to measure how long something takes. Browser tools can make either task quick, but features and background behavior vary by site and device. For official race timing or scientific measurement, use equipment suited to the required precision rather than relying on an ordinary web page.
Timer or stopwatch: which one do you need?

Some sites combine both modes and add laps, presets, alarms, or focus sessions. For example, ManyHand offers timer, stopwatch, and Pomodoro features, while Site95 describes a countdown timer and stopwatch. Check the controls on the specific page rather than assuming every online timer includes the same options.
How to choose an online timing tool
Match the mode to the task
For a deadline or interval, enter a duration into a countdown timer. For an event whose length you do not know in advance, start a stopwatch and stop it when the event ends. If you need repeated intervals, laps, or splits, verify that the page supports them before you begin.

Check the display and controls
Look for a readable display, straightforward start, pause, reset, and stop controls, and any features your task needs: hours, fractional seconds, keyboard shortcuts, fullscreen, presets, or sound. Josh Liljenquist’s stopwatch describes lap timing, while Swifttimer describes stopwatch and countdown modes with additional controls. A display showing hundredths of a second does not, by itself, establish that the tool measures real-world events to that accuracy.

Consider privacy and saved state
Timing data may be lost on reload or kept between sessions, depending on the site. Read the tool’s privacy and storage explanation if you do not want timing state retained, or if you need to resume it later. Do not assume that a timer will survive a page refresh.
How accurate is an online stopwatch?
Accuracy depends on how a particular page measures elapsed time, as well as on the browser and device. One useful distinction is between the clock used to calculate elapsed time and the schedule used to redraw the display. Josh Liljenquist says its stopwatch calculates elapsed time from monotonic browser timestamps, so a delayed screen update does not itself change the underlying elapsed-time calculation; the page also says it is not laboratory timing equipment. That is a description of that implementation, not a guarantee about other sites.

stopwatch-online.com says its stopwatch uses the browser’s performance.now() API and displays hundredths of a second. Those are the site’s own technical and display claims, not independent certification. More digits on screen do not prove equivalent measurement accuracy: browser timing is appropriate for everyday tasks, but not necessarily for a rule-governed race or scientific measurement. Use dedicated equipment when the required precision or rules demand it; a generic consumer stopwatch should not be assumed to be certified for those uses.
Does the timer keep running if I switch tabs?
It depends on the implementation, browser, device, and power settings. A page may calculate elapsed time from clock readings even when its display refresh is delayed, but that does not guarantee that every site maintains its state or plays an alarm while in the background. Site95 warns that some phones may pause background tabs and notes that browser audio may require an initial click.

If an alert matters, test the exact tool on the device and browser you plan to use: start a short timer, switch away, lock the screen if relevant, and confirm that the alert sounds. Keep the page visible when practical, and do not rely on a browser alarm as the sole alert for a safety-critical task.
Can I record lap times?
Only if the stopwatch includes a lap or split control. Josh Liljenquist’s page identifies lap timing as a feature; other online stopwatches may offer only start, stop, and reset. Confirm that the control is available and learn how it records laps before an event begins. If official results or a required timing standard is involved, use the equipment and procedure specified for that event.

Does an online stopwatch work offline?
Offline availability is specific to the site and how it is delivered to your browser. Do not assume a page will load or continue functioning without a connection. If you need timing where internet access may be unavailable, open the tool in advance and test it offline, or choose an app or dedicated device whose offline operation is documented.

When a browser timer is the wrong tool
- Official race results: Follow the event’s timing rules and use the required equipment; an online display is not proof of certification.
- Scientific measurement: Select an instrument appropriate to the experiment’s precision and procedure.
- Critical alerts: Avoid depending on a background browser alarm unless you have confirmed it works under the actual device conditions and have an appropriate backup.
For cooking, study sessions, ordinary workouts, classrooms, and presentations, an online timer or stopwatch can be convenient when its controls and limitations fit the task. Reviewed examples include ManyHand, Site95, and Swifttimer; compare their actual features and behavior rather than relying on a feature name alone.
