Yes—some services document a way to create an account without providing a mobile number, but no provider can be assumed to offer a phone-free signup in every case. Google and Microsoft describe email-based signup options; Proton may still ask for a phone number as an anti-abuse check. WhatsApp requires a phone number to activate an account. Signup requirements, extra checks, and recovery choices are separate issues, so check the service’s official instructions when you’re ready to register.
Which services support signup without a phone number?
These official instructions cover four examples, not a complete list of online services. An email address can be an alternative identifier at some providers, but an anti-abuse prompt may still appear, and a service built around a phone number may require one from the start.

Google: use an existing email address
Google’s account-creation instructions allow an existing non-Gmail email address. You must verify that address with a code sent to it. The instructions label the phone step “Optional: Add and verify a phone number for your account.” A Google Account can provide access to services including YouTube, Google Drive, Calendar, and Google Play. When new-account creation fails, Microsoft recommends trying an alternative signup method, such as an email address instead of a phone number. For later verification, Microsoft says email, an authenticator app, or a passkey may be available. Options depend on the account; a phone-number option may not be available to everyone. Microsoft’s signup guidance and security and verification guidance describe these options.

Proton: expect a possible verification prompt
Proton does not promise a phone-free signup for every attempt. It says account creation might involve a CAPTCHA, phone verification, or email verification. Which options appear depends on circumstances, including repeated account attempts and Tor use. If avoiding a phone prompt is essential, be prepared for the possibility that the available flow will not meet that preference. Proton explains its human-verification options.
WhatsApp: a number is part of activation
WhatsApp is not a phone-free signup option. Its registration guidance says an active phone number is needed for verification to activate an account. The email-code option described in its help material applies to logging in to an existing account when an email address was added beforehand—not to creating an account without a number. Why might a service ask for a number anyway?
A phone field can serve different purposes. It may be a required signup identifier, an optional recovery method, or an extra check triggered by the service’s anti-abuse system. Those are not interchangeable: an optional number added for recovery is different from a number required to create or activate an account.

A prompt can therefore appear even when a service also documents an email-based route. Do not assume that changing devices, using a VPN, trying a temporary SMS site, or repeating signup attempts will reliably bypass a check; the official guidance cited here does not support those methods.

How to sign up while protecting account access
- Check the official signup instructions. Confirm whether the phone step is required, optional, or only one possible verification method. Requirements and prompts may change and can vary with the account, geography, device, or risk checks.
- Use an email address you expect to keep. If the provider sends a confirmation code or later recovery message there, you need continued access to that inbox.
- Choose a strong, unique password. Reusing a password makes an account vulnerable if another service suffers a breach.
- Set up another supported verification or recovery method. If offered, consider an authenticator app or passkey. Add recovery information you can maintain, and save any recovery codes securely.
- Keep the recovery method usable. Make sure you retain access to the email account, device, passkey, or codes you chose; avoiding a phone at signup does not remove the need to recover the account later.
Can you recover an account without a phone?
Possibly, if the service supports another method and you set it up. Microsoft lists email, an authenticator app, and a passkey among verification methods that may be available, though the choices can differ by account. For Google, adding recovery information improves the prospects of recovering an account; a phone number is not the only kind of information to consider. Check the provider’s recovery instructions and configure a method you can actually access before you lose access to the account.

- Initial signup: Does the official flow permit an email address instead of a number?
- Extra verification: Can the service still require a phone check under some circumstances?
- Recovery: Are email, an authenticator app, a passkey, or recovery codes available for your account?
- Purpose: Does the service require a number because its core function depends on phone-based activation, as WhatsApp does?
There is no universal list of services that will never ask for a number. The documented Google and Microsoft email routes are useful starting points, while Proton’s options are conditional and WhatsApp requires a number for activation. Because signup flows can change, consult the relevant official help page immediately before creating an account.
