Choose a JSON utility by the job: use a formatter to make valid JSON readable, a validator to check syntax, an editor to change it, a viewer to explore its structure, or a repair tool to attempt changes to malformed input. The available information identifies five services and describes their stated capabilities; it does not establish a tested list or ranking of 19 services. NVToolkit describes its own catalog as containing 19 JSON tools, which is a vendor’s tool-count claim—not 19 independently compared editors.

What the “19” refers to—and what it does not

The title’s number needs qualification. NVToolkit advertises 19 JSON tools in its catalog, but the available descriptions do not enumerate all 19 or establish that they are 19 separate services. The named examples here are five websites: JSONLint, JSON Formatter & Validator at jsonformatter.me, Online JSON Formatter, NVToolkit’s JSON tools, and jsoneditor.io. Their described features offer useful starting points for choosing a tool, but they have not been independently tested or ranked here.

That distinction matters because “JSON formatter” can refer to quite different workflows. A page that prettifies text may not provide a tree viewer, compare two files, repair malformed input, or validate against a schema. Start with the task you need, then check the service’s own description for the specific capability.

What each kind of JSON tool does

Format or beautify

A formatter adds whitespace and indentation to make JSON easier to read. JSONLint describes prettifying, compressing, and optional key sorting. Pretty-printing valid JSON changes its layout, not its data values; sorting keys is a separate optional transformation, not merely formatting.

Parse or validate

A parser checks whether input is accepted as JSON syntax. A validator may provide diagnostics, such as an error location. JSONLint says it reports a line and column for malformed input; NVToolkit lists parser and validator tools separately. A formatter may reject invalid input rather than repair it, so look for an explicit validation or parsing function if identifying syntax errors is your goal.

Edit

An editor is for changing content, often with syntax highlighting or other editing controls. jsoneditor.io describes online editing, while NVToolkit describes a VS Code-style JSON editor. Editing features are not evidence that the tool applies a schema, detects application-level mistakes, or verifies that values are correct for your program.

View or inspect

A viewer presents nested data in a form that is easier to explore than a block of text. jsonformatter.me describes editor, tree, graph, and statistics views. JSONLint’s catalog includes a collapsible tree and table viewer. These are useful when the question is where a value sits in a nested structure, rather than whether the text is valid.

Repair malformed input

JSONLint lists a JSON Repair tool, and jsonformatter.me describes automatic fixing of common errors. Treat repair as a proposed change: review the result rather than assuming it preserves your intent. A successful repair does not show that the original text was valid JSON. Some tools may also accept extensions beyond strict JSON, so acceptance by a particular page is not by itself proof of strict interoperability.

Compare, convert, query, or use a schema

These are separate jobs from formatting. JSONLint lists compare and diff, converters, JSONPath, and schema tools; jsoneditor.io describes JSON-to-CSV and CSV-to-JSON conversion and comparison of two JSON documents. Choose these functions when you need them, rather than assuming every editor or formatter includes them.

Five named services and their stated features

Service Capabilities described by the service Good fit when you need
JSONLint Validation and reformatting in one editor; prettify, compress, optional key sorting; line-and-column diagnostics; a catalog that includes a tree/table viewer, repair, compare and diff, converters, JSONPath, and schema tools. A single place to check syntax and access a range of related utilities.
JSON Formatter & Validator (jsonformatter.me) Editor, tree, graph, and statistics views; automatic fixing of common errors. Different presentations of the same data or an attempt to fix common input problems.
Online JSON Formatter Client-side operation and offline support, according to its description. A browser-based formatting workflow where offline operation is useful, subject to checking the service’s current details.
NVToolkit JSON tools Separate parser and validator tools, a VS Code-style JSON editor, and a catalog the vendor describes as containing 19 tools. Looking for distinct utilities rather than a single all-in-one editor.
jsoneditor.io Online editing, comparison of two JSON documents, and JSON-to-CSV and CSV-to-JSON conversion. Editing, comparing, or converting JSON and CSV.

This is a feature summary, not a performance comparison. The descriptions do not establish a winner, the relative speed of these services, their large-file limits, or whether each feature is available in every current version or region.

How to choose for your task

  1. For readable output: choose a formatter or beautifier. If you need stable key ordering as well as indentation, confirm that sorting is available and decide whether changing member order is appropriate for your use.
  2. For a syntax error: choose a parser or validator that provides useful diagnostics. A line and column can narrow the search, but inspect the surrounding text and account for the possibility that the reported position is where parsing failed, not necessarily where the underlying mistake began.
  3. For navigating nested data: use a tree, graph, or table presentation if offered. Switch back to the original text when you need to inspect punctuation or exact values.
  4. For changes between versions: use a comparison or diff feature that accepts both documents. Review the reported differences in context; the existence of a diff view alone does not establish how it treats ordering or equivalent representations.
  5. For malformed or non-JSON input: decide whether you want strict validation or recovery. A repair tool may make edits, and a parser may accept extensions. If another system must consume the result, verify the output against strict JSON expectations.
  6. For conversion, queries, or schemas: select a tool that explicitly describes the needed function. Formatting does not convert data, run a JSONPath query, or establish conformance to an application’s schema.

What counts as valid JSON

IETF RFC 8259, published in December 2017, defines JSON as “a lightweight, text-based, language-independent data interchange format.” Its JSON values include objects, arrays, numbers, strings, and the lowercase literal names false, null, and true. Object member names are strings; the RFC says they SHOULD be unique. A JSON generator’s output MUST conform to the grammar.

Whitespace around structural characters is permitted. That is why a formatter can expand compact, valid JSON without changing its data values. But a permissive tool can accept extensions that strict JSON does not; RFC 8259 explicitly allows parsers to accept extensions. If compatibility matters, distinguish “this page accepted my input” from “this input conforms to the JSON grammar.”

Privacy: check the specific service

Browser-based does not automatically mean private or locally processed. JSONLint says its formatter runs in the browser and pasted JSON is not uploaded for server-side formatting. jsonformatter.me says content is processed locally. Online JSON Formatter claims client-side operation and offline support. These are statements by the services, not independent security audits, and they should not be generalized to other tools.

Before pasting credentials, access tokens, personal records, or production payloads, assess the specific service and its data-handling terms. If you cannot verify that a tool is appropriate for sensitive data, use an approved local editor or another workflow permitted by your organization. A feature list, an offline claim, or a local-processing statement is not a general guarantee about every page, feature, or version.

ScreenshotNeo is for a different job

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a JSON editor, parser, or formatter. It is relevant only if your surrounding workflow also needs website screenshots—for example, an AI agent that needs to capture a web page. Its MCP tools include take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. It should not be used as a substitute for validating or editing JSON.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Or skip the browser setup

For a screenshot, make one GET request with the target URL and your API key. The example saves a WebP response; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Those are screenshot features and plans, not JSON-tool features.

Practical checks before relying on the result

  • The formatter rejects your input: switch to a validator or parser that reports diagnostics; check the indicated line and column, then inspect nearby syntax.
  • A repair succeeds but output differs: compare the repaired text with the original and review each change. Do not treat repair as proof that the source was valid.
  • A tool accepts text another system rejects: check whether the tool accepts extensions and whether the target system expects strict JSON.
  • You need to compare revisions: use an explicit compare/diff function and review the result rather than assuming a formatted view reveals all meaningful changes.
  • You are handling sensitive data: use only a service whose data handling you have assessed for that material; vendor claims of local processing are not an independent audit.

No independent comparative measurements establish which of these services is fastest, handles the largest file, or is most accurate. For that reason, choose by the required function and verify the result in the system that will consume the JSON.
