Android did not introduce a blanket ban on online betting. Google Play expanded the kinds of real-money gaming apps it would support in India, Mexico, and Brazil in 2024, while later Android changes address developer identity verification and how some apps are installed. Whether a betting app is available—or legal to use—still depends on the market, the operator’s authorization, and the distribution route.
What changed, and when?
| Date | Change | What it means for betting apps |
|---|---|---|
| January 11, 2024 | Google announced that Google Play would support more types of real-money gaming (RMG) apps and operators, with a planned June 2024 launch in India, Mexico, and Brazil. | This was an expansion of Play’s policy in those markets, not a global change to gambling law or an assurance that any particular app would be available. Google’s announcement |
| March 4, 2026 | Google announced broader Play and Android distribution changes, including an optional Registered App Stores program. | Qualifying registered stores were to receive a more streamlined installation flow. Google said the program would start outside the United States; US implementation was subject to court approval. Google’s announcement |
| September 30, 2026 | Google’s Android developer-verification protections begin in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand for installs from participating stores on certified devices running Android 7 or later. | This verifies developer identity; it does not certify that a betting operator is licensed. Google says global expansion is planned for 2027. Android developer verification |
What Google Play’s betting policy allows
Google Play does not have a worldwide ban on betting apps, nor does it allow them everywhere. Its policy permits covered gambling apps in selected countries, subject to Google’s application and policy requirements and the relevant local authorization. The policy includes sports betting, online casinos, lotteries, and games that accept money for cash or other real-world value. Google Play’s real-money gambling policy
For a covered app, the developer must be an approved governmental operator and/or registered as a licensed operator with the appropriate authority in the country, and must provide a valid operating license for the specific gambling product there. The operator and product therefore matter: a license in one jurisdiction does not establish authorization in another.

Google’s January 11, 2024 announcement said it would broaden Play support for RMG app types and operators in India, Mexico, and Brazil, with rollout planned for June 2024. The expansion followed pilots, including daily fantasy sports (DFS) and rummy in India and DFS in Mexico. Google’s announcement-era dates said the India pilot apps could remain on Play through June 30, 2024, after which other RMG types could be distributed subject to local law and the updated policy; Mexico’s DFS pilot was also scheduled to end June 30, 2024, with broader RMG distribution thereafter subject to those conditions. Those dates describe the announced rollout, not the present availability of any specific app.

The expansion did not override local gambling law or guarantee that an operator could offer betting in every part of a named country. Google said its safeguards remained in place: RMG apps should be age-gated for adults and geo-gated so they are offered only where legal. As Google put it in the 2024 announcement, “Google Play’s existing developer policies supporting user safety, such as requiring age-gating to limit RMG experiences to adults and requiring developers use geo-gating to offer RMG apps only where legal, remain unchanged and we’ll continue to strengthen them.”
Why a betting app may not appear in the Play Store
- Location: Google Play’s gambling-app support is limited to selected countries, and an app must be offered only where its product is legal. A country’s inclusion in Google’s policy does not establish availability in every state or region within it.
- Operator or product eligibility: The operator must meet Play’s requirements and hold the appropriate authorization for the specific product and jurisdiction.
- Age restrictions: Google requires adult age-gating for these experiences.
- App-specific status: The policy describes eligibility, not a directory of currently approved operators. It does not establish the current licensing or availability of a particular betting app.

Does Android still allow betting apps outside Google Play?
Android distribution is broader than Google Play. Google describes other app stores and direct sideloading, such as installing an app from a developer’s website. Play’s gambling-app policy governs apps distributed through Play; it should not be treated as a universal approval process for every Android installation route. That flexibility does not make a betting app safe, licensed, or legal. The operator still needs authorization where the reader is located, and an app’s presence outside Play is not evidence of that authorization.

What Android developer verification means for betting apps
Google’s current developer-verification documentation says protections begin on September 30, 2026, in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. The initial scope covers installs from participating stores on certified Android devices running Android 7 or later; Google says expansion globally is planned for 2027. Google describes the measure as verifying developers. It is separate from Play’s requirements for gambling operators and licenses, and it does not mean every store or installation route follows identical rules.
Google’s documentation summarizes the initial scope this way: “Protections begin for users installing apps from participating stores in select regions on certified Android devices.”

How to assess an app before installing or betting
- Check your jurisdiction’s rules. Confirm that the specific form of betting and the named operator are authorized where you are. Do not infer legality from an app-store listing or from another country’s rules.
- Check the distribution route. If the app is in Google Play, Play’s country, licensing, age, and location safeguards apply. If it comes from another store or a developer’s site, do not assume Play reviewed it under the same policy.
- Verify the operator and product. Look for authorization from the relevant governmental authority for the exact betting product and location; a general claim of being licensed elsewhere is not enough.
- Consider the installation protections in scope. Android developer verification applies according to the documented region, participating-store, and device conditions. It verifies developer identity, not gambling legality or operator approval.
Bottom line: Android access is not betting permission
Google Play’s 2024 change widened support for real-money gaming apps in three named markets, while Android’s later changes concern developer identity verification and installation flows. None of these platform changes determines whether online betting is lawful for a particular person or location. Check local rules and the operator’s specific authorization before using an app.
