The OnePlus 13 launched globally on January 7, 2025, with both IP68 and IP69 ratings—the first OnePlus phone to carry both, according to OnePlus. The iPhone 16 Pro Max is rated IP68 by Apple. That gives OnePlus an additional hot, high-pressure water-jet test, not a blanket claim that it is more resistant in every situation or a better phone overall.
What IP69 means on the OnePlus 13
IP ratings describe protection against the entry of solids and water under specified test conditions. In an IP code, the first digit concerns solids and the second concerns water. OnePlus lists the OnePlus 13 as both IP68 and IP69 under controlled IEC60529 tests, covering separate water-exposure scenarios.
IP68: immersion in still water
OnePlus says its IPX8 test uses still freshwater at 1.5 metres for 30 minutes. The “X” means the rating’s water test is being described here; it does not provide a solids-protection digit in this specific code.
IP69: hot water jets
OnePlus’s IPX9 disclosure specifies 80 °C water jets at a flow rate of 15±1 litres per minute, with 30 seconds of spraying at each of four angles. This is a jet test, not a deeper or longer version of the immersion test.

How the OnePlus 13 compares with iPhone 16 Pro Max
Apple lists the iPhone 16 Pro Max as IP68, tested to 6 metres for 30 minutes under controlled laboratory conditions. OnePlus discloses its IP68 immersion test at 1.5 metres for 30 minutes and adds the IP69 hot-jet test. These figures describe different manufacturers’ tests and product disclosures; they should not be treated as a direct head-to-head durability trial.
| Phone | Published ingress rating and test details |
|---|---|
| OnePlus 13 | IP68 and IP69 under controlled IEC60529 tests. OnePlus specifies still freshwater at 1.5 metres for 30 minutes for IPX8, and 80 °C jets at 15±1 L/min for 30 seconds at each of four angles for IPX9. OnePlus specifications. |
| iPhone 16 Pro Max | IP68; Apple specifies a test to 6 metres for 30 minutes under controlled laboratory conditions. Apple technical specifications. |
So, does the OnePlus 13 have the higher water-protection rating? It has the additional IP69 rating for hot, high-pressure jets, while both phones have IP68. That makes the OnePlus more comprehensively rated across these disclosed test types; it does not establish that it will outperform the iPhone in every real-world exposure. The IP68 test depths also differ, and the published conditions are not a controlled comparison between the two phones.

What the rating does—and does not—promise
Laboratory ratings do not guarantee protection from every spill, submersion, pressure, temperature, or repeated exposure a phone may encounter in daily life. OnePlus explicitly warns that daily-life liquid exposure differs from laboratory conditions and that liquid damage is excluded from its warranty. Do not deliberately test either phone by immersing it or directing hot jets at it.
For a wet phone, follow the manufacturer’s care guidance rather than charging it while wet or assuming the rating makes liquid damage a covered warranty claim. IP ratings are useful for comparing defined tests, but they are not a substitute for careful handling.

Is IP69 enough reason to choose the OnePlus 13?
It is a meaningful distinction if hot, forceful water jets are relevant to how you use or clean a phone. For most buying decisions, however, the rating answers only one part of the comparison. OnePlus also lists a Snapdragon 8 Elite platform, a display with 4500-nit peak brightness and DisplayMate A++ testing, Hasselblad cameras, and 4K Dolby Vision recording on every camera. These are OnePlus’s stated product features, not independent comparisons with the iPhone.
Software support, price, warranty terms, and regional availability also matter, but the cited specifications do not establish a directly comparable set of values for those categories. Check current terms and availability for your country before choosing between the phones; the protection ratings alone cannot settle which is the better purchase for you.
