Choose based on what you need beyond a storage number. OneDrive is a stronger fit if you want Microsoft 365 desktop apps or separate storage allowances for a household. Google Drive may suit you better if your files already live in Google services, but its free and paid storage is shared with Gmail and Google Photos. The US prices below are those displayed on provider pages accessed October 9, 2026; plans, prices, and availability can change.
How the storage allowances compare
OneDrive storage is tied to a Microsoft account and its plan. Google account storage is pooled across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos, so files are not the only thing using the allowance. A Google plan’s headline capacity is not necessarily the space available for Drive files alone.

What the price buys you
Microsoft plans: storage plus apps at the higher tiers
Microsoft 365 Basic is the paid entry option shown at 100 GB. Personal raises that to 1 TB for one person and adds desktop Office apps. Family offers up to six individual 1 TB allowances, as well as Microsoft 365 benefits. If you already need the desktop apps, comparing the subscription against storage-only alternatives misses part of the value; if you do not, those bundled benefits may matter less.

Google plans: pooled space and service benefits
Google One Basic starts at 100 GB, while the displayed Google AI Plus and Google AI Pro plans include 2 TB and 5 TB. These are the names and offerings shown on Google’s US plan page, not timeless storage-only tiers. Because the quota is pooled, account for Gmail and Photos use when estimating how much room remains for Drive.
How to choose for one person or a household
- For a single user who mainly needs 100 GB: the listed entry prices are both $1.99 per month in the US. Compare what you already use and remember that Google’s allowance also covers Gmail and Photos.
- For one person needing around 1 TB: Microsoft 365 Personal lists 1 TB at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year and includes desktop Office apps. The Google plan page lists 2 TB in Google AI Plus at $9.99 per month, with additional plan benefits. The capacities are not directly interchangeable because Google’s pool includes Gmail and Photos.
- For several people: Microsoft 365 Family gives each person a separate 1 TB allowance, up to six people. Google’s listed plans allow storage sharing with up to five others, but the space is shared rather than presented as a separate allowance for each person.
- If you are near your Google quota: check usage in Drive, Gmail, and Photos together before buying more storage. A large Gmail or photo library can reduce the room available for Drive files.
- If you rely on Google or Microsoft services already: ecosystem fit and included benefits may be more important than the nominal cost per gigabyte. Microsoft consumer plans list Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android availability; Google’s plans center on its pooled services.
Sharing controls: what is established for OneDrive
Microsoft says OneDrive files are private until shared. Its documented link audiences include anyone with the link, people in an organization, people who already have access, or specified people. Microsoft documents view and edit choices. Edit access to a folder can allow collaborators to change or manage contents, including copying, moving, renaming, sharing, and deleting. Password protection and link expiration are described as Microsoft 365 subscriber features in the documented context, so do not assume they are available on every account.

A practical decision checklist
- Estimate actual space needed. Include Gmail and Photos when evaluating Google’s quota, rather than treating its whole capacity as Drive-only storage.
- Choose the required tier. Compare the complete plan price at that capacity, including annual versus monthly Microsoft billing and any benefits you would otherwise pay for.
- Count the people. Decide whether your household needs separate personal allowances or can use a shared storage pool.
- Check sharing requirements. Identify whether collaborators need view or edit access and whether audience restrictions, expiration, or password protection are mandatory; confirm availability on your specific account.
- Confirm local terms. Prices and availability vary by market, so verify the current offer at checkout for your location.
