A proxy comparison is not credible if one provider controls the verdict criteria while its own service is being judged. The responsible response is to disclose the conflict, separate provider claims from measured evidence, and withhold any ranking the available results cannot support. The specific editorial incident implied by this headline is not independently established here, so this article does not identify a vendor or present that account as verified fact.

What makes a residential proxy verdict fair?

A fair comparison starts with a consistent method and a clear account of who controls it. Readers should be able to tell who selected the providers, who chose the targets and metrics, who ran the test, and whether any provider or commercial relationship influenced the process.

It also matters what kind of evidence supports each claim. A measured result from a disclosed test is different from a provider’s statement about its own network, and both are different from an outside publisher’s report of another party’s investigation. Treating those categories as interchangeable turns claims into apparent proof.

  • Measured results: report the test conditions, sample size, dates, metrics, and status.
  • Vendor statements: attribute sourcing, consent, and safeguard claims to the company unless independently verified.
  • Outside reporting: identify the publisher, underlying investigator where known, and any relevant author or commercial connection.

What ProxyVerdict’s public benchmark currently establishes

ProxyVerdict’s benchmark page says its automated harness is running and that it does not publish invented figures. It lists Bright Data, Oxylabs, Smartproxy, Decodo, NetNut, IPRoyal, Rayobyte, and SOAX as “measuring,” not as ranked providers. Its stated method tests provider free trials under identical conditions against representative public pages and tracks success rate, average latency, and block rate. It specifies five requests per target per provider. ProxyVerdict’s benchmark and methodology

That is a disclosed test plan, not a performance verdict. Five requests per target is a small sample for drawing broad conclusions, and the page’s pending status means it does not yet provide results from which to name a winner. The appropriate editorial choice is to report the method and status, then wait to publish comparative claims until results are available and sufficiently qualified.

How to assess performance without hiding the limits

When results are published, success rate, latency, and block rate are useful only when readers can see how the test was run. The stated benchmark compares free-trial access under a common setup; its results, when available, should be read as evidence about those trials and test conditions rather than a guarantee of what every customer will experience.

  • Report the target pages, request count, test dates, and whether the same conditions applied to each provider.
  • Show the metrics separately: a high success rate does not by itself establish low latency or a low block rate.
  • Describe the sample limits and avoid extending a short or narrow test into a universal “best proxy” claim.
  • Keep pending providers visibly pending rather than filling missing results with estimates or vendor marketing figures.

Residential sourcing is a separate question from speed

Residential proxies route traffic through physical devices, so consent and participant awareness are central sourcing questions. Oxylabs’ company-authored 2020 standards describe a framework that grades consent, awareness, clarity of information, and participant reward. That is Oxylabs’ own framework, not an industry regulator’s standard or an independent audit of every address in its network. Oxylabs’ 2020 discussion of residential proxy sourcing standards

A provider’s sourcing statement is relevant evidence of what it says its practices are, but it does not independently establish that every IP in a pool was acquired under those conditions. An editorial comparison should label company-authored claims as such and avoid turning a policy description into a verified network-wide finding.

What an IP transparency check can—and cannot—show

Oxylabs describes its IP Transparency tool as a beta check for whether the current IP appeared in its residential network during the prior 30 days. Its FAQ cautions that a positive match does not prove that the device used to run the check is itself enrolled in the network. The tool therefore has a defined lookback period and limited meaning; it is not a complete audit of sourcing or proof about a particular device. Oxylabs’ IP Transparency announcement and FAQ

A reported IP overlap is not proof of shared sourcing

TechRadar reported a Proxyway investigation of smartproxy.org, described as an impersonation site. According to that report, Proxyway sent about 6.96 million HTTP requests over one week and identified 2,023,029 unique IPs in the tested pool. It reported 773,087 IPs overlapping with a comparison dataset of 16,192,293 verified IPIDEA exit nodes observed over the 30 days ending January 29, 2026. The reported overlap was 38.21% of the tested pool and 4.77% of the comparison dataset. TechRadar’s report of Proxyway’s analysis

Those are measurements reported for that site and comparison dataset; an overlap figure alone does not prove how the addresses were sourced or establish a general fact about a provider’s network. The TechRadar article is authored by Vaidotas Juknys, Decodo’s CEO, a relationship readers should know when weighing its interpretation. Keep the raw reported measurements distinct from the article’s inference about shared sourcing.

Why free-proxy findings should not be applied to paid residential services

A 2024 study by Mehanna, Rudametkin, Laperdrix, and Vastel collected and tested more than 640,600 free proxies from 11 providers over 30 months. The researchers reported that 34.5% were active at least once during their tests and identified 4,452 distinct vulnerabilities among the free-proxy IPs and services they scanned. The 2024 study of free web proxies

That evidence describes the free-proxy population the researchers measured. It is useful context for the instability and security risks of public free proxies, but it does not establish that named paid residential proxy providers have the same characteristics.

A practical checklist for reading proxy reviews

  • Independence: identify who selected providers and criteria, who performed the test, and any relevant commercial ties.
  • Method: look for targets, metrics, sample size, dates, trial or plan conditions, and whether testing is complete.
  • Evidence type: distinguish test measurements from a vendor’s policy claims and from another publisher’s reporting.
  • Sourcing: ask what consent and awareness claims are documented, who makes them, and whether an independent check supports them.
  • Scope: confirm that a transparency tool or study measures the specific network, period, or population being discussed.
  • Verdict: treat rankings as provisional or unavailable when results are pending, methods are too narrow, or conflicts are not disclosed.
