A single Eloquent-style interface can simplify calls to many external APIs, but it cannot make their response formats identical. In a 2026 account, laravel-rest author Aleksandr Efimov says his live test sent real requests to 62 public APIs across 470 scenarios. His examples show how per-API configuration handles pagination and record envelopes—and how an unexpected JSON list exposed a model-hydration bug.

What the 62-API test set out to show

Efimov says that the APIs he had used in Laravel each led him to build a separate client, pagination loop, and convention for handling missing records. He created laravel-rest to make external API calls resemble familiar Eloquent operations, including queries such as Post::where(...)->paginate(). He later assembled a live test matrix intended to exercise APIs with structurally different pagination, envelopes, and record formats. The reported total is 62 APIs and 470 scenarios, with nightly runs; those are the author’s figures, not an independently verified audit. Efimov’s account

The range he describes includes page-, offset-, and cursor-based pagination; bare arrays and wrapped data; and formats such as JSON:API, OData, Socrata, GraphQL, and JSON-RPC. The point is not that one client can infer every API’s conventions automatically. Rather, a common query interface can be paired with configuration for each service’s actual parameter names and response shape.

Three API examples show where configuration matters

The clearest illustrations in the account are PokéAPI, the Art Institute of Chicago API, and crates.io. They demonstrate different mapping tasks, rather than establishing that every one of the 62 integrations was documented to the same level. A secondary analysis of the post likewise describes the detailed wire examples as covering those three APIs. The Clarity Today’s analysis

API Response or pagination detail Configuration or behavior shown
PokéAPI Records appear in results; pagination information uses count and next. The model identifies results as the data key and name as the primary key. Efimov reports that the result is a Laravel LengthAwarePaginator.
Art Institute of Chicago A record is wrapped in data; the artist relationship uses artist_id. The example configures a relation and fetches related artist records in parallel.
crates.io The page-size parameter is per_page; total-count metadata is at meta.total. The example maps the client’s page-size setting to per_page and reads the total from meta.total.

The examples and configuration details

A real response exposed a model-hydration bug

One of the most useful reported findings was not a successful mapping. Efimov says a JSON list passed an is_array() check and then reached model filling with integer keys, causing a TypeError where a string key was expected. He reports that Dog CEO’s breed map reached the same code path. This is a specific reported failure in how the package handled those response shapes—not proof that all list responses, or all uses of the package, fail.

The example illustrates why varied live responses can matter: a value can be an array in PHP without being an associative record suitable for filling a model. Tests that use only hand-picked object-like fixtures may miss that distinction unless they include lists and maps as separate cases.

What the request-time comparison does—and does not—establish

For an example involving four artwork records with four distinct artists, Efimov reports five requests taking 782 ms sequentially and 144 ms concurrently. He describes these as single runs on his laptop, with request counts recorded using Guzzle history middleware. They illustrate the effect parallel relationship lookups had in that run; they are not a repeatable benchmark or a general speedup guarantee. Upstream response times and network conditions affect such measurements. Efimov’s timing example

Live API coverage brings reliability problems of its own

Real requests make tests sensitive to conditions beyond the client. Efimov describes a quota response that was first classified as a package failure, a timeout lasting 229 seconds, and API data changing between scenario design and the full run. He says outcomes include pass, failure, API unavailable, and documented unsupported behavior. In the latter case, the test still makes a request so a future change in the service may reveal that the limitation no longer applies. Efimov’s discussion of test outcomes and live-service issues

He also recounts adversarial review finding scenarios that could remain green even after the behavior they were meant to test had been removed, as well as cases assumed to be unsupported that worked once someone tried them. These are important qualifications for interpreting a broad live-test count: test volume alone does not show how many cases passed, whether each assertion would detect a regression, or whether an API was available during a run.

How much confidence should readers place in the results?

The 62-API and 470-scenario totals are Efimov’s reported test scale. The primary account does not state an aggregate pass count, so the figures should not be read as 470 passing scenarios. The Clarity Today analysis notes both that the concrete examples it examined cover three APIs and that no total pass count is stated. That is an analyst’s characterization, not a formal independent audit. The Clarity Today’s analysis

The examples make a narrower, useful case: an Eloquent-like interface can sit over APIs with different envelopes, pagination metadata, identifiers, and relationship behavior, provided those differences are configured and handled. The reported list-hydration failure and live-service interruptions also show why broad coverage is an ongoing maintenance task rather than a one-time compatibility certificate.
