The OM SYSTEM OM-3 is a Micro Four Thirds interchangeable-lens camera built around a 20.4MP stacked BSI Live MOS sensor. Its headline features include high-rate electronic shooting, subject-detection autofocus, in-body stabilization, computational photography controls, and 4K video. Those specifications make it worth considering for travel, outdoor photography, and action-oriented shooting—but they do not establish image quality or autofocus performance in real-world use. This review explains what OM SYSTEM’s published specifications do and do not tell you, and what to budget for beyond the body.
What is the OM SYSTEM OM-3?
The OM-3 is a mirrorless camera with a Micro Four Thirds lens mount, so it is not a fixed-lens compact: you choose and attach a compatible lens for the kind of photography you do. OM SYSTEM specifies an approximately 20.4MP effective-resolution stacked BSI Live MOS sensor and its TruePic X processor. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent image-quality measurements. OM SYSTEM’s product page and detailed specifications describe the feature set.
That distinction matters in a review: the published figures establish what modes and features are available, but they do not show how the camera handles, how often autofocus succeeds in a particular scenario, or how its images compare with similarly priced cameras. No independent side-by-side results are established here, so the OM-3’s suitability is best judged against your intended work, lens requirements, and total kit cost.
How fast can it shoot, and what does autofocus cover?
OM SYSTEM lists a maximum of 120 frames per second in a specified electronic sequential shooting mode, as well as a 50 fps mode. These are mode-dependent maximum rates, not a promise of unconstrained continuous tracking at those speeds. Focus and exposure settings, shutter mode, and use of a compatible lens affect which rates and functions are available. Check the conditions on the official specification page before planning around a particular shooting mode.

The camera also offers intelligent subject detection for named subject classes. Detection support and a high maximum frame rate can be useful starting points for wildlife or action photography, but the published specifications do not establish tracking reliability or a keeper rate. If those results are decisive for you, seek independent testing for your subject and lens combination rather than treating the top frame-rate figure as a performance verdict.
What stabilization and video modes are listed?
OM SYSTEM claims up to 7.5 EV steps of image stabilization. The figure is a manufacturer claim, not an independently measured result for every lens, focal length, or shooting situation. It should not be read as a guarantee that every handheld exposure will be sharp.

The product information advertises 4K 60p, and the detailed regional specifications list 4K at 60p and 50p. C4K is listed at lower frame rates. Video options depend on the selected recording mode; the existence of a format or frame rate does not by itself establish footage quality, rolling-shutter behavior, or recording duration. For specified 4K, C4K, and ALL-I recording, OM SYSTEM recommends an SDHC/SDXC UHS-II card or a UHS-I U3 card. Consult the detailed specifications for the available modes and card guidance.

OM SYSTEM lists a magnesium-alloy body and a freezeproof figure of -10°C. Its weather-protection rating is qualified: the page gives IP53 or IPX1 depending on the attached lens. That means you should not assume every OM-3-and-lens combination has the same protection. Verify the rating for the lens you plan to use and follow the manufacturer’s handling guidance. The rating is not a reason to expose equipment to conditions beyond its stated protection. OM SYSTEM’s specifications set out the qualification.

- SUPERIOR IMAGE QUALITY - Capture stunning detail with the 20.4 Megapixel Four Thirds BSI Stacked CMOS sensor, delivering exceptional clarity and vibrant colors for every shot.
- VERSATILE LENS SELECTION - Utilize the Micro Four Thirds lens mount, offering a vast array of interchangeable lenses to suit any photographic need, from wide-angle to telephoto.
- RAPID AUTOFOCUS SPEED - Achieve precise focus instantly with advanced autofocus capabilities, ensuring you never miss a critical moment, even with fast-moving subjects.
- ADVANCED VIDEO CAPABILITIES - Record cinematic 4K video at up to 60fps (H.265 10-bit) or 1080p at 60fps, providing professional-grade footage with rich detail and smooth motion.
- ULTIMATE PORTABILITY - Experience lightweight design with the body weighing only 14.56 oz (413g), making it ideal for travel and extended shooting sessions without fatigue.
How much does the OM-3 weigh, and how long does the battery last?
OM SYSTEM lists the camera at 496 g with battery and memory card, or 413 g body-only. The actual carried weight will be higher once you add a lens and any other kit you need. For an interchangeable-lens camera, compare complete setups—not body weights alone—when deciding whether it suits travel or everyday carry.
The manufacturer estimates approximately 590 still images in standard mode using its specified BLX-1 battery and memory-card test configuration. Treat that as a maker’s estimate, not a guaranteed count: real use varies with settings and shooting habits. One BLX-1 battery is listed in the box contents on the body page, which also cautions that included items can vary by country. Check the local body listing for what is included.

What else do you need to buy?
- A lens: Because the OM-3 has a Micro Four Thirds mount, body-only buyers need a compatible lens. Choose for your use—such as a compact travel setup or a longer wildlife lens—and confirm compatibility for any feature-specific high-speed mode you intend to use.
- A memory card: The camera supports SDHC and SDXC cards using UHS-I and UHS-II. For 4K, C4K, and ALL-I recording, OM SYSTEM recommends UHS-II or UHS-I U3. The cited guidance does not establish a particular brand or capacity; check recording needs and the complete mode requirements before buying. See the manufacturer’s card guidance.
- Power accessories, if needed: The body page lists one BLX-1 battery in the box, but contents may differ by country. Charger inclusion is not universal: the cited UK listing indicates that a charger is not included. Confirm the contents of your local package before purchase, and consider a spare BLX-1 for long days or video use.
Prices and package contents can change by market and seller. Compare a body-only listing with any lens kit on its included items, then account for the lens, card, and power accessories you actually need.

The OM-3 is most compelling on paper for someone who wants a compact-format interchangeable-lens body with creative controls, computational photography features, stabilization, subject detection, and fast sequential modes. Its specifications may also appeal to outdoor photographers, provided they check the protection rating for their specific lens combination.
Before choosing it, weigh the complete kit for your use rather than relying on headline specs. Consider the lens you need, total system cost, video modes, handling preferences, and whether the particular high-speed and subject-detection capabilities have been independently tested for your subjects. The available manufacturer specifications are not enough to call the OM-3 a winner over similarly priced alternatives.
