Counterpoint Research projects that OLED notebook display shipments will rise 50% in 2026, and it names Apple’s expected MacBook Pro shift and AI PC demand as the main drivers. That is a market forecast published October 9, 2026. Apple has not been shown to ship an OLED MacBook Pro, so the Apple model is best read as an expected product that could drive demand, not one readers can buy today.
What the Counterpoint forecast says
The headline, published October 9, 2026 under Counterpoint Research’s byline, reads: “OLED notebook display shipments to jump 50% in 2026 as Apple’s expected MacBook Pro shift and AI PC demand fuel growth.” The subheadline is publisher wording, and the page text available for this article does not show the underlying methodology, sample, or the full report. Treat the 50% figure as a projected growth rate for OLED notebook display shipments, with the Apple link as Counterpoint’s explanation for that growth, not as a measured result.
Shipments, revenue, and MacBook units are different numbers
Most coverage of this topic blends three measures that behave differently: panel shipments, panel revenue, and finished laptop sales. Counterpoint’s 50% figure is about display shipments. Omdia’s figures are about display revenue or about total large-area displays, and none of them counts MacBook units. The table below separates the forecasts by metric, period, and source.
| Metric | Forecast | Period | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| OLED notebook display shipments | +50% growth | 2026 | Counterpoint Research, published October 9, 2026 |
| Notebook-PC OLED display revenue | $4 billion | 2026 | Omdia, June 4, 2026 |
| Notebook-PC OLED display revenue | $11.5 billion, about 16.2% of total OLED display revenue | 2033 | Omdia, June 4, 2026 |
| Hybrid OLED share of notebook-PC OLED shipments | 12.6% | 2026 | Omdia, June 4, 2026 |
| Hybrid OLED share of notebook-PC OLED shipments | 89.5% | 2033 | Omdia, June 4, 2026 |
| Large-area OLED shipments (all sizes above notebooks and tablets included in Omdia’s large-area category) | +18.8% to 38.8 million units | 2026 | Omdia, July 15, 2026 |
| Total large-area display shipments, including LCD | -2.3% to 916.9 million units | 2026 | Omdia, July 15, 2026 |
| Total large-area display revenue | -1.7% to $69.9 billion | 2026 | Omdia, July 15, 2026 |
The contrast in the last three rows matters. Omdia expects OLED to grow inside a large-area display market that is shrinking overall, and it attributes that pressure to rising component prices, geopolitical tensions, and global economic uncertainty. Omdia’s Practice Leader YS Chung put it this way: “Despite weaker conditions across the wider market, large-area OLED shipments are expected to increase in 2026.” (Omdia, July 15, 2026.)

Supplier capacity: what is planned
The forecasts depend on panel makers adding notebook OLED capacity on schedule. Omdia’s reporting describes the following plans. These are plans and forecasts reported by Omdia, not confirmed production results.
- Samsung Display (Omdia, June 4, 2026): would supply OLED panels for leading notebook brands from July, with devices expected to launch in the third quarter of 2026.
- BOE (Omdia, June 4, 2026): was planning to start ramping its Gen 8.6 flexible OLED fab in the third quarter of 2026.
- Gen 8.6 IT OLED plants (Omdia, July 15, 2026): Samsung Display and BOE would begin mass production from mid-2026, focused on notebook PC displays.
If those schedules hold, the supply side can support the forecast growth. If they slip, the 2026 shipment figures become harder to reach, and the revenue forecasts would move with them.

The panel technology behind the forecast
Omdia says the leading notebook brands are moving to a new mix of OLED constructions. The two that matter most for premium laptops are hybrid flexible OLED and tandem OLED. The trade-offs are different, so they are easier to evaluate separately.

Omdia describes new notebook designs based on oxide TFT, LTPO TFT, and RGB tandem OLED technology. Jerry Kang, Practice Leader at Omdia, said: “The leading notebook PC brands and OEMs are adopting hybrid, flexible OLED for their new series based on oxide TFT, LTPO TFT and RGB tandem OLED technology.” He added that “this combination is being used for the first time in this form factor and is designed to reduce power consumption compared to LTPS and RGB single OLEDs.” Omdia also says the approach can make devices thinner and lighter by freeing space for circuits and batteries.

Tandem OLED
Tandem OLED stacks two RGB emission layers. Omdia’s April 2025 analysis says this theoretically can reach up to twice the brightness and four times the lifespan of single-layer OLED. The same analysis identifies the costs: the extra evaporation steps and fine metal masks raise material use and affect yields, and tandem tablet and notebook panels are estimated to cost 50% to 75% more to manufacture than single-layer OLED. Those brightness and lifespan figures are Omdia’s theoretical potential, not test results from any laptop. Charles Annis, Practice Leader in Omdia’s Display Research group, also warned that “image quality may be degraded by variations between the double set of emission layers, and the increase of common layers makes the panel more susceptible to crosstalk.”
| Approach | Benefit Omdia cites | Trade-off Omdia cites |
|---|---|---|
| Hybrid flexible OLED (oxide TFT, LTPO TFT, RGB tandem) | Designed to reduce power consumption compared with LTPS and RGB single OLEDs; can enable thinner, lighter devices | Described as used for the first time in this form factor; no cost figure stated in the Omdia material cited |
| Tandem OLED (double-stacked RGB emission layers) | Theoretically up to twice the brightness and four times the lifespan of single-layer OLED | Panels estimated 50% to 75% more expensive to manufacture; possible image-quality and crosstalk issues |
| Single-layer OLED | Baseline for Omdia’s comparisons | Baseline for Omdia’s cost comparison |
What is not established
The forecasts describe the market, not a product. The sources cited here do not confirm an OLED MacBook Pro’s release date, specifications, pricing, or availability, and they do not state which panel architecture any Apple model would use. No independent test, review, or consumer survey of an OLED MacBook Pro is part of this coverage. Counterpoint’s 50% growth figure and Omdia’s panel forecasts are also separate estimates from different firms, with different scopes, so they should not be added together or treated as a single number.

Signals that would confirm the Apple link
Readers who want to check the forecast against events can watch for the following. Each one would move the Apple claim from expectation to fact.
Recommended Free Tools
- An official Apple announcement or product page for an OLED MacBook Pro, with stated display specifications.
- Confirmation from Samsung Display or BOE that they are shipping notebook OLED panels to a named laptop maker.
- Updated Counterpoint or Omdia shipment data that breaks out notebook OLED by brand or model, with the methodology published.
Until one of these appears, the most accurate summary is that panel makers are preparing notebook OLED capacity, analysts forecast strong 2026 growth, and Apple’s expected MacBook Pro shift is the main reason Counterpoint gives for that growth.
