If an older TV looks too processed, keeps changing brightness, or makes films seem unnaturally smooth, try changing its picture mode, motion interpolation, and automatic brightness controls before replacing it. These reversible adjustments can make the image feel clearer or more stable, but the best result depends on the TV, what you watch, your room, and your preferences.
Start with picture mode
Picture modes are a useful first check because a preset can change several parts of the image, including color, light output, and motion processing. For films and TV shows, compare your current preset with Movie, Cinema, Custom, or Filmmaker Mode if your television offers one. The names and effects vary by model, so treat them as starting points rather than guarantees.
Use the same scene for each comparison and give your eyes a moment to adjust. A vivid or dynamic preset may look brighter at first, while a less processed preset may look more natural over time. Try switching off motion smoothing
Motion smoothing, also called motion interpolation, creates extra frames to make movement appear smoother. Some viewers like the result, especially for sports; others find it makes films look artificially slick. Try turning it off while watching a film, then turn it back on if you prefer smoother movement for sports or other content.

Filmmaker Mode is intended to disable certain processing, including motion smoothing, sharpening, and noise reduction. Its FAQ describes the aim as displaying content without inadvertent changes from the TV’s processing: Filmmaker Mode FAQs. The mode’s availability and behavior depend on the TV, and choosing it is not required to adjust motion settings yourself.
Check automatic brightness and energy-saving controls
If the screen dims or brightens unexpectedly, look for controls that respond to room light or reduce power use. Depending on the brand and model, related names can include Energy Saving, Eco, Ambient Light Sensor, or AI Brightness. LG documents automatic controls as one possible reason a screen’s brightness changes; Samsung describes Eco mode as an energy-saving feature. Turn off one relevant control at a time and compare under the same room lighting. If you prefer the TV’s response to changing light, or want the energy-saving behavior, you can leave it enabled. The goal is to address unwanted shifts, not to assume automatic adjustment is always wrong.

Brightness controls are not all the same. A TV’s light output is different from image-level brightness controls that affect how dark or light picture details appear. Choose a comfortable screen light level for your room; brighter is not automatically more accurate, and a setting that suits a sunlit room may feel harsh in a dark one.

Avoid copying numerical picture settings from another TV. Even sets from the same model line can vary, and suitable settings depend on the viewing environment. Make changes safely and compare the right inputs
- Record the starting point. Photograph or write down the current picture settings so you can restore them.
- Change one thing at a time. Select a less processed picture mode, test motion smoothing, then investigate automatic brightness or energy controls. Compare the same scene rather than relying on memory.
- Check the sources you actually use. When possible, repeat the comparison for SDR and HDR content, built-in apps, and HDMI devices. A TV may store settings separately for different modes or inputs; consult the manual for your exact model.
- Restore anything you dislike. These are experiments, not permanent fixes. Your preferred settings can differ between films, sports, and games.
When basic adjustments are enough—and when calibration is different
You do not need specialized equipment to try basic picture adjustments. RTINGS provides downloadable AVS HD 709 test patterns that can help with some settings. True calibration is a separate process: it measures the colors produced by the particular TV using specialized equipment. It is optional, not a prerequisite for trying a different picture mode or disabling an unwanted automatic control.
