Old School RuneScape (OSRS) is not quite 20 years old as a live service: Jagex dates its launch to 2013. The “nearly 20” refers to the 2007 game version it preserves, now about 19 years old. The distinction matters, but so does the fact that OSRS has kept evolving. Jagex is still investing in quests, a raid, and client improvements, while a 2026 PC Gamer interview reported record-setting activity. That supports a hopeful outlook—not proof that OSRS’s best years are ahead.
How old is Old School RuneScape?
There are three dates behind the age question:
- RuneScape began in 2001. That is the start of the wider franchise, which marked its 25th anniversary in 2026, according to Jagex’s company history.
- The OSRS game snapshot is from 2007. That version is the basis for the “nearly 20 years old” description.
- The Old School RuneScape service launched in 2013. Jagex says it was born in response to player demand and community voting.
So, in 2026, the preserved game era is about 19 years old; OSRS as a live service is about 13. Calling the service itself nearly 20 years old would conflate the age of the game version with the age of the product.
Why is the game based on 2007?
2007 was not necessarily the year players initially asked Jagex to restore. In a PC Gamer interview, Jagex senior communications manager Danni Amos said players wanted the 2006 version, but Jagex could not find it in its archive. An employee found a 2007 server, which the team booted up. Amos described the discovery this way: “A [Jagex employee] found the 2007 server in their desk drawer, and we had to boot it up, see if it works.”
That accidental starting point became the foundation for a game shaped by the community that had asked for it. Jagex dates OSRS’s birth to 2013, following player demand and voting; the story is recounted in PC Gamer’s August 2026 feature.

Why is Old School RuneScape still popular?
Its appeal is not simply that it preserves a familiar version of RuneScape. OSRS keeps the old-school foundation while adding new material, and it gives players a meaningful role in deciding what changes. PC Gamer reported that proposed additions are put to a player vote and need at least 70% approval, while updates can range up to expansion-scale releases. That is an account of Jagex’s polling practice in the interview, not an independently audited description of every current poll rule.
This arrangement offers a balance: players can push back against changes they do not want, while the game can still gain new quests, activities, and systems. The result is not a frozen 2007 archive, but a continuing service whose additions are filtered through a community approval process.

What’s coming to Old School RuneScape in 2026?
In its May 29, 2026 Summer Campfire recap, Jagex outlined a slate of OSRS plans. They show the kind of ongoing development that can sustain a long-running game; they are plans, not confirmation that every feature shipped on its stated schedule.

The roadmap’s breadth is significant for a game built around an old snapshot: Jagex is proposing new high-level content as well as improvements to the ways players access the game. But a roadmap demonstrates intent, not delivery or guaranteed future growth.

Is Old School RuneScape still growing?
There is encouraging evidence, but it needs careful attribution. PC Gamer’s August 14, 2026 interview reported that OSRS had set an all-time player-count record the previous August. The article also quoted creative director Kieren Charles estimating “upwards of one million active subscribers.” That is Charles’s estimate as reported by a secondary source, not an audited player-count disclosure from Jagex.
Charles said, “The game’s bigger now than it was in 2007,” and described his own long connection to the game: “I grew up with the game.” Those remarks convey leadership’s view and personal history, but they do not establish a like-for-like population trend against other MMOs or a verified count of active players.

Are OSRS’s best years still ahead?
That is a reasonable possibility, not a demonstrated fact. Jagex’s 2026 plans include a new raid, major quests, and client and mobile work. Its broader corporate messaging also points to increased investment across the RuneScape franchise. Those are signs of commitment, but some of Jagex’s strongest future-facing claims concern RuneScape as a whole rather than OSRS alone.

Likewise, Jagex’s October 2026 RuneFest preview discusses franchise-level plans for 2027 and efforts to bring players back; it is not an OSRS-specific roadmap. No named person in the cited material says literally that OSRS’s best years are ahead. The most grounded conclusion is that the game has a credible path to continued relevance: a recognizable old-school identity, community influence over additions, and ongoing development. Whether its future surpasses its past will depend on execution and player response.
