To donate old equipment responsibly, identify what you have, check a nearby charity or electronics program’s acceptance rules, remove personal data from devices that store it, and confirm the handoff details before you go. Acceptance and what happens after donation depend on the specific organization; an item may be reused, refurbished, stripped for parts, or recycled.
This guide focuses on U.S. options and guidance. If you are elsewhere, check local rules and programs.
How to decide where your equipment should go
Start with the item’s condition and the kind of organization best suited to handle it. A local charity or reuse organization may accept usable household goods and electronics; an electronics-specific program may be a better fit when a general donation center cannot take a device. If something is broken, do not assume it will be accepted for repair or reuse.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Make a quick inventory: list each item, its make or model if known, its working condition, and the quantity.
- Mark anything that stores personal or organizational data, such as computers, phones, tablets, and storage drives.
- Search for local charities, reuse organizations, and electronics donation or recycling programs that handle those items.
- Ask the prospective recipient whether it accepts the exact items, conditions, and quantities you have.
- Confirm whether the organization offers drop-off, pickup, or shipping, and ask about any fees or preparation requirements.
For practical local guidance, the Goodwill Industries International donation page lists electronics categories but warns that acceptance depends on the local Goodwill organization. Its rules are not a universal list for every Goodwill location. As one Massachusetts example, Morgan Memorial Goodwill Industries says staff may decline items based on condition, size, or ability to reuse them.

What to check before taking equipment in
Ask the recipient about restrictions before loading or shipping equipment. A quick confirmation can prevent an unwanted trip or a rejected delivery.
- Does it accept the exact item and its current condition, including broken or incomplete equipment?
- Are there limits on size, quantity, or accessories?
- Should loose batteries be removed, and how should they be handled?
- Is the location open for donations, and is an appointment needed?
- Does the program provide drop-off, pickup, or shipping? Who pays shipping costs?
- What happens to working and nonworking equipment after handoff?
- If the equipment contains data, what documentation—if any—does the recipient provide for wiping or destruction?
Policies, participating locations, and pickup eligibility can change. Verify current details directly with the organization before transporting equipment.

How donation differs from recycling
Donation does not guarantee that an item will be handed directly to another person. Depending on its condition and the program’s process, equipment may be reused, refurbished, used for parts, or sent for recycling. Ask the organization how it handles working and nonworking items rather than assuming every donation will be reused.
For example, Dell Reconnect is a recycling route operated through participating Goodwill sites; Dell says it accepts used technology of any brand and condition at those locations, but that is not a promise of direct reuse. Human-I-T describes refurbishing equipment where possible, reusing components, and using downstream recycling for items it cannot refurbish. These are program-specific descriptions, not rules for other recipients.

Recycling can also recover materials. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency cites U.S. Geological Survey estimates from 2006 that recycling one million laptops saves an amount of energy equivalent to the annual electricity use of more than 3,500 U.S. homes. The EPA also cites estimates that recycling one million cell phones can recover 35,000 pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver, 75 pounds of gold, and 33 pounds of palladium. These are historical estimates, not a prediction of the materials recovered from an individual donation. See the EPA’s electronics donation and recycling guidance.
How to protect your data before donating electronics
Back up files you want to keep, then delete personal information from data-bearing devices before handoff. The EPA advises donors to delete personal information, and Dell Reconnect likewise directs donors to sanitize devices. Do not leave this step to the recipient’s process.

- Storage: 256GB SSD – Quick Boot Speeds and Responsive Storage
- Back up files you need to another secure location.
- Sign out of accounts and remove the device from account-linked services where appropriate.
- Use the device’s built-in reset or secure erase process, following its manufacturer’s instructions.
- For removable storage, erase it separately or remove it if the recipient permits that. Confirm the recipient’s rules before removing components.
- Ask the organization how it handles devices that cannot be erased and whether it offers a data-destruction record.
Recipient safeguards can provide an additional layer, but they do not replace your own preparation. Human-I-T says its procedures vary by device and condition, including wiping, destruction, or use of approved downstream partners; it also says it offers a data destruction certificate for donations containing data-bearing devices. Ask that organization about current terms and eligibility if documentation matters to you.

Follow the recipient’s instructions for batteries and local battery-recycling rules. The EPA advises removing batteries where appropriate and warns that lithium-ion batteries—and devices containing them—should not go in household garbage or recycling bins. Do not put a loose lithium-ion battery in a regular household bin; check your local authority or an appropriate battery collection program for safe handling.

Examples of U.S. donation and recycling routes
These examples illustrate different kinds of programs; they do not establish acceptance at every location or eligibility for every donor.
Dell Reconnect through participating Goodwill sites
Dell describes free drop-off of used technology of any brand and condition at participating Goodwill locations. It directs donors to sanitize devices and use its location finder. Its page, reviewed October 7, 2026, reports more than 2,000 locations in 44 states and participation by 75 Goodwill entities; coverage can change, so check the current locator and confirm the site accepts your item. This is a recycling program, not guaranteed direct reuse.
Human-I-T
Human-I-T says it accepts most equipment with a plug, excluding appliances, and lists laptops, desktops, tablets, phones, monitors, printers, networking equipment, and servers. It describes pickup for qualifying donations, shipment at the donor’s expense for smaller donations, and warehouse drop-off in Bell, California. Confirm item eligibility and current logistics with Human-I-T before arranging a handoff.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLocal charities and reuse organizations
A local organization may accept equipment for reuse, resale, or another route, but the exact list and condition requirements vary. Goodwill Industries International explicitly advises checking with the local organization, and local examples may exclude broken goods or items that are too large or difficult to reuse.
Receipts and tax questions
Ask the recipient what receipt or tax documentation it provides, if any. A receipt does not establish that you qualify for a deduction or determine the value of donated goods. Human-I-T says it provides tax documentation, while Morgan Memorial Goodwill Industries notes that donors remain responsible for determining condition and value. For your own eligibility and valuation, consult current IRS guidance or a qualified tax professional.
