The Edmonton Oilers beat the Vancouver Canucks 9-7 in Vancouver on Thursday, October 1, 2026, after building an 8-2 lead and then surviving a four-goal Canucks run. Leon Draisaitl’s power-play goal stopped Vancouver’s rally and helped Edmonton leave with the win, according to the Associated Press report republished by theScore.
How the Oilers–Canucks game turned into a 16-goal thriller
Edmonton scored five times before Vancouver got on the board, then extended its advantage to 8-2. Two of the Oilers’ goals came shorthanded during a Canucks power play: Connor McDavid and Kasperi Kapanen scored on breakaways just 34 seconds apart.
Vancouver answered with four consecutive goals. Elias Pettersson’s power-play goal 7:37 into the third period cut the deficit to 8-6, making the finish tense. Draisaitl scored on an Oilers power play less than two minutes later, halting the run. The Canucks added another goal, but Edmonton held on for the 9-7 final.
Who led the scoring?
McDavid finished with one goal and four assists. Draisaitl scored twice and added an assist. Evan Bouchard had a goal and two assists in this game; the AP also reported that he entered it with three goals and two assists in Edmonton’s season-opening 6-5 loss to Vancouver on Tuesday. The AP described Bouchard as the first defenseman in NHL history to record eight points—four goals and four assists—in his first two games of a season.

Edmonton took the win despite playing without top-six forwards Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Zach Hyman, according to the AP. The 16 combined goals made for a high-scoring game, but the available report does not establish that the total was a season record or unusually high against a league-wide scoring average.
