Pulse’s sync design treated offline work, photo uploads and server receipt as separate stages. That let auditors begin an inspection without a network, but it also meant “submitted” did not necessarily mean every part of the inspection had reached the server. The key lessons are to assign records an identity before they can reach the server, order dependent uploads deliberately, and show users what is still waiting.

What offline-first meant for Pulse

Pulse is an inspection app for auditors who may need to work without connectivity. In the account published by mobile engineer Abhishek Goyal, the mobile clients could start an inspection offline, while the completed record still had to be delivered to a server so other people could see it. Offline-first therefore did not mean “no server”; it meant allowing work to proceed locally and handling delivery later.

Goyal says he owned Pulse’s Android and iOS mobile work and designed the synchronization contract with the backend and web teams before implementing the clients. His portfolio describes Pulse as serving 100+ B2B enterprise clients and 20,000+ field users in 10+ countries. Those are portfolio figures, not independently verified measurements. See Goyal’s portfolio.

Give an inspection an identity before it reaches the server

An auditor cannot wait for a server-generated ID if an inspection must be startable offline. Pulse therefore used an identity generated on the client, allowing the record to exist before the server could assign its own ID.

SABRENT USB 3.0 Dual Bay Hard Drive Docking Station & Cloner (EC-HD2B)
  • Supports Standard Desktop 2.5"/3.5" SATA Hard Drives or SSD.
  • Supports hard drives up to 10TB.
  • Plug and play, no drivers needed.
  • Supports Offline Cloning up to 60Mbps.
  • Supports Transfer Speeds up to 5Gbps (USB 3.0),480Mbps (USB 2.0), 12Mbps (USB 1.1)

This makes immediate local creation possible, but it leaves the application with two identifiers to handle: the local ID and the server ID. Code that reads, updates or submits an inspection has to know which identifier it is using. The design trade-off is practical: offline work begins promptly, at the cost of carrying that distinction through the client and its synchronization contract.

Choose upload order to preserve correctness

Inspection photos were uploaded in the background while the auditor continued working. Pulse submitted the inspection form only after every attached photo had been confirmed on the server. That ordering made remote photo receipt a prerequisite for form submission, rather than assuming the attachments would arrive in time on their own.

SABRENT 4-Bay USB 3.0 Hard Drive Docking Station, Clone (DS-U3B4)
  • 4-Bay SATA Docking Station: Supports up to four 2.5” or 3.5” SATA HDDs and SSDs for data access, backups, and multi-drive management from a single dock.
  • USB 3.0 Host Connection: Connects to a computer via USB 3.0 for reliable file transfers up to 5Gbps, with backward compatibility for USB 2.0 systems.
  • Trayless Drive Design: Allows direct insertion of drives without trays or tools, simplifying setup and maintenance when the dock is powered off.
  • Offline Clone Function: Enables direct drive-to-drive cloning without a computer, with LED indicators displaying clone progress during operation.
  • Plug and Play Operation: Requires no drivers or software and includes an external power adapter for stable operation with multiple installed drives.

This is a dependency, not merely a throughput choice: the record’s successful submission depended on its evidence already being present remotely. For a system with dependent attachments, the relevant question is whether the server should accept the parent record before all of its required files are confirmed. Pulse’s described flow chose not to submit the form until that confirmation.

Make pending delivery visible to the user

Finishing work on the device and having the server receive it were different states in Pulse. After submission, the app showed upload progress and how many items were still waiting. This helped users tell the difference between an action they had completed and synchronization that was still underway.

  • High-capacity add-on storage.Specific uses: Business, personal
  • Fast data transfers

Goyal’s broader point is that an offline-first system has a gap between the user being finished and the server having the work. As he puts it, “if that gap isn’t visible, users will assume the wrong one.” Progress and pending-item counts make that gap observable instead of leaving users to infer server receipt from a local action.

What the account says about edit conflicts

The available passage says concurrent edits to one inspection were uncommon and that the app was designed to keep that the common case. It does not establish how Pulse resolved a conflict if concurrent edits did occur. In particular, it does not document a merge algorithm, a last-write-wins rule, locking, or a conflict-resolution screen. The account supports the design lessons above, but not a specific conflict policy.

What to take from Pulse’s sync design

  • Local identity enables immediate work: records can be created without waiting for the server, but local and server IDs must remain distinct in the client’s logic.
  • Dependencies determine upload order: Pulse waited for attached photos to be confirmed remotely before submitting the inspection form.
  • Delivery state belongs in the interface: progress and remaining-item counts distinguished user completion from server receipt.

These are lessons from Goyal’s account of Pulse, not a comparison of sync engines or proof that one synchronization design fits every application. The article is listed on DEV Community.
