Microsoft lists October 13, 2026 as the end-of-support date for Office LTSC 2021. From that date, Microsoft says it will no longer provide technical support, bug fixes, or security updates for the product. The cutoff falls on the Patch Tuesday date named in the headline, but Microsoft’s announcement does not identify a specific final security patch released that day.
What changes on October 13, 2026?
Microsoft’s announcement, Office LTSC 2021 reaching end of support on October 13, 2026, says support ends on that date. Microsoft’s lifecycle listing also gives October 13, 2026 as the end date; it records September 16, 2021 as the product’s start date.
After the cutoff, Microsoft says it will no longer provide technical support, bug fixes, or security updates for Office LTSC 2021. The applications do not thereby stop launching or become immediately unusable, but the lack of future security updates means organizations should plan to move supported workloads to another product rather than rely on LTSC 2021 for ongoing protection.

The date coincides with Patch Tuesday, but the Microsoft announcement establishes the support cutoff, not that a particular final Office LTSC 2021 update shipped on October 13. It does not name a final update by KB number.

Who is affected?
This cutoff concerns Office LTSC 2021, the volume-licensed, fixed-feature Office release used by organizations. It is not a statement about consumer Office 2021, which has separate guidance. Microsoft’s announcement links users seeking individual-user information to that separate guidance.
Microsoft’s lifecycle search results list the same end-of-support date for Office LTSC 2021. Localized lifecycle pages may express date and time using a particular time zone; the announcement states the date as October 13, 2026.

Choose a supported successor
Microsoft recommends Microsoft 365 Apps for organizations seeking to remain in a supported environment. For commercial organizations not ready to move to cloud-connected services, Microsoft identifies Office LTSC 2024 as its latest supported on-premises version. The options differ in licensing and how Office receives features:

Microsoft describes LTSC as intended for specific scenarios, such as regulated devices that cannot accept feature updates, manufacturing process-control devices, and specialty systems that cannot connect to the internet. That is product guidance, not a recommendation that every organization should choose LTSC. Plan the transition
- Inventory deployments. Identify devices running Office LTSC 2021, their business owners, and any applications or workflows that depend on them. Separate those devices from consumer Office 2021 installations, which are outside this particular lifecycle notice.
- Choose the servicing model. Decide whether continuous feature updates and subscription licensing fit, or whether a fixed-feature, volume-licensed on-premises release is required for a defined operational reason.
- Validate licensing and compatibility. Confirm the organization’s Microsoft 365 plan or volume-license agreement, target device count, application dependencies, and deployment approach before scheduling migration.
- Set a rollout date ahead of the cutoff. Pilot the chosen version, resolve compatibility issues, then migrate remaining devices before support ends. A transition plan should account for systems that cannot be updated on the same schedule as standard desktops.
- Check migration assistance eligibility. Microsoft says organizations with more than 150 licenses can consider FastTrack for migration support in its end-of-support announcement.
What the cutoff does—and does not—mean
- It does mean Microsoft support, bug fixes, and security updates for Office LTSC 2021 end after October 13, 2026.
- It does not mean the software automatically stops working on that date.
- It does not establish that Microsoft released a specific final security update on that Patch Tuesday.
- It does not cover consumer Office 2021; Microsoft treats that product separately.
