Indian sprinter and 400m hurdler Vithya Ramraj’s competitive breakthrough and sudden online visibility arrived together at the 2026 Asian Games. She won gold in the women’s 4x400m relay, silver in the mixed 4x400m relay and bronze in the 400m hurdles, where her 54.75-second run surpassed the national record she had previously equalled. Days later, her parents told her they kept seeing her face as they swiped through their phones.

Why Ramraj’s face was suddenly everywhere

In an interview published October 1, 2026, Hindustan Times reporter Avishek Roy recounted how Ramraj’s parents told her, “With every swipe of our phones, we can see your face.” Her father was also repeatedly checking YouTube videos of her races. The family’s comments prompted Ramraj to open Instagram and see how widely clips of her performances were circulating.

“I feel like I am the star of Instagram today,” Ramraj told Hindustan Times. The feature reported that her following had risen from 5,000 to 65,000 after the Games. That is the publication’s snapshot from October 1, 2026—not a live follower count or an independently verified platform figure.

The performances behind the reels

Ramraj’s visibility followed a three-medal Asian Games campaign. The Hindustan Times profile reported these results:

Women’s 4x400m relay Gold India won in 3:29.69, ahead of Bahrain’s 3:30.21, according to Hindustan Times. World Athletics also lists a 3:29.69 4x400m relay performance for Ramraj in its 2026 season-best data.
Mixed 4x400m relay Silver Hindustan Times reported India’s silver medal.
400m hurdles Bronze Ramraj ran 54.75 seconds on September 28, 2026, at Municipal Mizuho Stadium in Nagoya, according to her World Athletics profile.

A decisive relay anchor leg

Hindustan Times reported that Ramraj anchored the women’s 4x400m relay, chasing down China’s Siyu Zuo before holding off Bahrain’s Salwa Eid Naser. The team’s 3:29.69 finish secured gold over Bahrain’s 3:30.21.

The same profile described how Ramraj initially worried about the pressure of anchoring the mixed relay: she would have to wait through the earlier legs before her turn. Her coach, Nehpal Singh, asked whether she would take the anchor leg and encouraged her to accept. Ramraj later recalled his advice: “You win medals and followers will come.”

How 54.75 seconds changed the record story

Ramraj’s 54.75-second hurdles performance is listed by World Athletics as her personal best, dated September 28, 2026, in Nagoya. Hindustan Times reported that the time broke P. T. Usha’s 55.42-second Indian national record, a mark the profile describes as 42 years old.

The progression had a precedent: at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, Ramraj had equalled Usha’s 55.42-second mark, according to the Hindustan Times account. That earlier achievement had not brought the online popularity she hoped for. The 2026 run was a new personal best and, as reported by Hindustan Times, the national-record breakthrough; it should not be confused with a world or Asian record.

What Ramraj said she wanted next

In the October 1 interview, Ramraj said she wanted to run the 400m hurdles in under 54 seconds and compete in international meets ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. “The goal is to go under 54secs (400m hurdles),” she told Hindustan Times. That is her stated target at the time of the interview, not a predicted result.

She also recounted that Usha had told her “records are meant to be broken.” The remark links the record Ramraj first matched in 2023 with the faster performance she produced in 2026.

What the available records confirm

World Athletics’ live athlete profile corroborates Ramraj’s 54.75-second personal best and its date and venue. The Athletics Federation of India’s Asian Games 2026 athletics team page lists her among India’s athletes in the women’s 400m hurdles and women’s 4x400m relay context. Rankings, season-best data and other live profile details can change; the medal narrative, family anecdotes and October follower count are reported in the dated Hindustan Times feature.
