The OCZ Vertex 4 128GB was a 2012 SATA III SSD whose advertised write speed changed sharply with firmware—and whose real-world write behavior could also depend on how much of the drive was occupied. OCZ raised its published maximum sequential-write claim from 200MB/s to 420MB/s with v1.4RC, but a contemporary Tom’s Hardware test found a pronounced decline after its 128GB sample had more than half its capacity written. Firmware 1.5 followed with further stated changes. Those figures and findings describe historical specifications and tests, not a performance guarantee for a used drive today.

What is the OCZ Vertex 4 128GB?

The 128GB model is the VTX4-25SATA3-128G, a 2.5-inch SATA III SSD in OCZ’s Vertex 4 family. OCZ’s 2012 product brief listed maximum sequential speeds of up to 535MB/s read and 200MB/s write for this capacity. OCZ said the sequential figures were determined using ATTO; they are launch-era manufacturer specifications, not expectations for every workload or for a drive that has been in service for years. OCZ Vertex 4 product brief (2012).

How did the v1.4 firmware change the advertised speeds?

In an announcement dated May 7, 2012, OCZ’s v1.4RC comparison listed the 128GB model at up to 550MB/s sequential read and 420MB/s sequential write, versus the earlier 535MB/s and 200MB/s figures. These were OCZ’s maximum claims, not independent test results. The announcement also described firmware changes involving predictive reads, mixed read/write behavior, stability, and chipset compatibility. OCZ’s v1.4RC announcement, reproduced by NikkTech.

Why did occupied capacity matter in testing?

Tom’s Hardware reported that write performance on its 128GB Vertex 4 sample running firmware 1.4 depended heavily on how much of the drive had been written. Once more than half the sample’s capacity had been written, its write throughput declined significantly. This was an observation from a specific 2012 test, not a finding about every Vertex 4 or every workload. Tom’s Hardware’s Vertex 4 128GB firmware 1.5 retest.

OCZ Technology 128GB Vertex 4 Series SATA 6.0 GB/s 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive (SSD) With Industry's Highest 120K IOPS And 5-Year Warranty - VTX4-25SAT3-128G
  • Sequential Reads Up to 550 MB/s
  • Sequential Writes Up to 420 MB/s
  • Random 4k Read IOPS 90K IOPS
  • Random 4k Write IOPS 85K IOPS
  • Maximum IOPS 120K IOPS

The reviewer reported OCZ’s explanation: the drive used a faster “performance” mode below half occupancy and a more conservative “storage” mode beyond that point, as part of its garbage-collection behavior. Treat that as OCZ’s explanation reported in the review, not a universal description of performance in all conditions.

What did firmware 1.5 say it changed?

Tom’s Hardware summarized the following as OCZ-stated changes for firmware 1.5:

OCZ Technology 256GB Vertex 4 Series SATA 6.0 GB/s 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive (SSD) With Industry's Highest 120K IOPS And 5-Year Warranty - VTX4-25SAT3-256G
  • Sequential Reads Up to 550 MB/s
  • Sequential Writes Up to 465 MB/s
  • Random 4k Read IOPS 90K IOPS
  • Random 4k Write IOPS 85K IOPS
  • Maximum IOPS 120K IOPS
  • Improved sequential file-transfer performance for the 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB models.
  • Optimized idle garbage collection to extend the benefits of performance mode across a greater portion of the drive.
  • Improved compatibility with HBA/RAID configurations and desktop and mobile ATA security features.
  • Fixed a corner case in which the SMART “Remaining Life” attribute could be reported incorrectly.

The article also retested the 128GB drive with firmware 1.5. Any benchmark result in that review belongs to its tested sample and procedures; it does not predict the condition or speed of an individual used drive.

Can you safely update a Vertex 4 today?

The surviving documentation establishes historical update procedures and warnings, but does not establish that an official OCZ updater is currently maintained or available. Do not assume that an old download, mirror, or forum link is authentic or safe. The old instructions are specific to their firmware and tooling paths and should not be generalized to every later release.

Before considering a legacy update, identify the exact model and current firmware, verify the updater’s authenticity through a trustworthy source, and make a separate backup of any data you need. If you cannot verify an authentic updater and compatible procedure, do not flash the drive.

What the old update guides warned about

  • Ask Corporation’s May 28, 2012 Japanese guide warned that the described firmware update erased recorded data and told users to back it up first. It described using OCZ Toolbox. Ask Corporation’s Vertex 4 update procedure.
  • OCZ’s archived Windows Toolbox guide identified Vertex 4 drives on v1.3 and v1.4RC as destructive-flash cases. It also said the tool could not update certain SATA III SSDs when they were the primary system drive, requiring a secondary-drive or alternate-boot arrangement for that procedure. These are dated instructions for the documented tool path. Archived OCZ SSD Toolbox/Firmware Update Guide for Windows.

What should a used Vertex 4 owner take away?

The 128GB Vertex 4’s firmware history is a reminder that a vendor’s peak sequential-speed claim and a reviewer’s capacity-dependent test result answer different questions. OCZ’s v1.4RC numbers describe its advertised maxima; Tom’s Hardware’s v1.4 observation describes one sample as occupancy increased; and v1.5’s listed changes describe what OCZ said it intended to improve. None establishes how a particular aging drive performs now. For an individual drive, confirm its model and firmware and assess its present condition rather than relying on launch-era speed claims.
