Yes. Oculus/Meta Quest headsets have built-in audio, so you do not need separate headphones for basic sound. The exact speaker and headphone connections vary by model: Meta lists two speakers and a 3.5 mm jack for Quest 3, and two speakers but no 3.5 mm jack in its audio specifications for Quest 3S.
What “Oculus” means for current headsets
Oculus is the older consumer name many people still use for Meta’s VR headsets. Because audio hardware differs across generations, check the specific model rather than assuming every Oculus or Quest headset has the same ports.
Meta’s current store page marks Quest 2 as no longer available. That status is about store availability; it does not mean the headset cannot produce sound.

Do you need headphones?
No, not for basic sound on the models covered here: their built-in audio means you can hear VR content without a separate headset. Optional headphones may make sense if you want more privacy or isolation, or prefer not to share sound with people nearby.
For wired headphones, check the connector on your exact headset before buying. Meta lists a 3.5 mm jack on Quest 3, but its current comparison does not list one for Quest 3S. The cited specifications do not establish Bluetooth compatibility or audio latency for these models, so do not assume a particular wireless setup will work as expected.

How optional headphones change the experience
The right style depends on whether you value isolation, room awareness, comfort or portability. Meta’s headphone guidance describes broad design trade-offs; these are not product-specific listening tests.

- Open-back headphones: Tend to offer comfort and accurate sound, but let sound in and out, providing less isolation.
- In-ear monitors: Can offer strong isolation in a lightweight form.
Choose a design with the headset’s comfort and your surroundings in mind. If hearing people or sounds in the room matters, a more isolating option may be a poor fit.

What spatial audio means in VR
Spatial audio processing makes sounds seem to come from particular directions or locations. Meta’s XR Audio SDK supports HRTF-based object and ambisonic spatialization development for PCVR and Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3 and Quest 3S. That shows spatial audio can be part of VR content; it does not mean every app uses it, and speaker count alone does not determine the effect.
Meta’s spatialization design guidance explains that HRTFs can provide more accurate directional cues than ordinary panning. The result still depends on how the app creates and mixes its audio.

How to choose between built-in sound and headphones
- Use built-in audio if convenience and awareness of your room matter more than privacy.
- Consider headphones if you want greater isolation or private listening.
- Check compatibility first by confirming your headset’s exact model and the connection it supports.
- Consider the app because spatialized audio depends on the content and its software, not just the headset speakers.
