For newcomers, the Switch 2 editions of Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II are straightforward ways to start the series. For people who already own the Switch versions, buying again is difficult to justify unless Square Enix’s stated resolution and frame-rate improvements matter enough to pay for a second copy. Square Enix says there is no upgrade pack planned, and saves cannot be transferred between the Switch and Switch 2 versions.
What’s different about the Switch 2 editions?
Square Enix says both Switch 2 editions improve resolution and frame rate over their Nintendo Switch releases. The publisher has not stated numerical targets in the materials cited here, so there is no confirmed resolution or frame-rate figure to compare, nor a basis for saying how noticeable the change is. These are publisher claims, not independent performance measurements.

The Switch 2 releases arrived on October 1, 2026, after Square Enix announced them on July 13, 2026. The games are available individually in digital form and together in a digital bundle; a physical bundle is also offered. The North American Square Enix Store lists each individual edition from $59.99. That is the publisher-store starting price, not a guarantee of the price at other retailers or during sales. Square Enix’s announcement and its North American store listing for the first game and listing for the sequel provide the release and product details.
Are they good starting points for newcomers?
Yes. The first game follows eight travelers in Orsterra, each with a personal story and distinct abilities. Battles are turn-based: players exploit enemy weaknesses, break defenses, and use Boost to strengthen actions. Character abilities also matter outside combat.
#1 Best Overall
- Begin your adventure as one of eight new travelers, each with their own origins, motivations, and unique skills
- The series’ HD-2D graphics, a fusion of retro pixel art and 3DCG, have reached even greater heights
- The story takes place in Solistia, where diverse cultures thrive from east to west and the industries of the new era flourish; You can sail the seas and explore every corner of a world that changes from day to night
- Each traveler has a unique set of Path Actions they can use to battle townspeople, obtain items, take others along in their travels, and more; Where will you go, What will you do, Every path is yours to take
- Familiar mechanics from the original game have been preserved, like the freedom to develop your travelers’ jobs and skills, as well as the Break and Boost system that made battles so exhilarating; New mechanics have also been added
Octopath Traveler II introduces eight new travelers in Solistia, a separate world shaped by an industrial era. It retains the series’ job development and Break-and-Boost combat while adding mechanics of its own. Square Enix describes its world as independent from the original and explicitly calls the sequel an entry for newcomers, so prior knowledge of the first game is not required to follow its setting and cast.
If you want both games, compare the bundle with buying the titles separately at your local store. If you want to try just one, either has its own world and group of travelers; the sequel is the clearest newcomer choice based on the publisher’s description. The series had shipped and sold more than 6 million copies worldwide as of July 13, 2026, according to Square Enix—not an independent sales tracker.

Should existing Switch owners buy them again?
Usually not on value grounds alone. Square Enix says it does not plan to offer an upgrade pack for either game, and save data is incompatible between the Switch and Switch 2 editions. Moving to the newer edition therefore means buying the game again and starting without a transferable save.

Prices, stock, and physical formats vary by region and retailer. In Japan, Square Enix’s e-STORE lists the physical bundle at ¥6,820 as a key card: the full game downloads on first play, requiring an internet connection and at least 11 GB of free space. Those details describe that Japan listing and should not be assumed to apply to physical products sold elsewhere. Square Enix e-STORE Japan bundle listing has the regional format details.
