Octopath Traveler II is a good choice if you want a long, single-player turn-based JRPG with several character-led stories and retro-styled HD-2D graphics. You do not need to have played the first game. The strongest evidence points to its combat, character stories, and visuals as its main draws. Its main risk is pace: long play sessions and repeated battles will put off anyone who wants something brisk or action-led.
This review is based on Square Enix and Nintendo’s official information, Nintendo’s Switch 2 product listing, and selected critic excerpts available as of early October 2026. It does not draw on personal playtime or independent performance testing.

Do you need to play the first Octopath Traveler?
No. Octopath Traveler II takes place in Solistia, a new world that is independent of the first game, and it features eight original travelers. Square Enix presents it as an entry point for newcomers while keeping the look and feel that existing fans know. In its July 13, 2026 announcement, Square Enix said:

“OCTOPATH TRAVELER II is the perfect entry for newcomers to the series, while also preserving the charm of the original game for existing fans by improving upon the series’ iconic HD-2D visuals, which feature a striking blend of retro 2D characters in a beautiful 3D world.”

- The series’ HD-2D graphics, a fusion of retro pixel art and 3DCG, have reached even greater heights.
- The story takes place in Solistia, where diverse cultures thrive from east to west and the industries of the new era flourish. You can sail the seas and explore every corner of a world that changes from day to night.
- Each traveler has a unique set of Path Actions they can use to battle townspeople, obtain items, take others along in their travels, and more. Where will you go? What will you do? Every path is yours to take.

That is the publisher’s own description of the game’s fit, not an independent assessment.
How the game plays
Eight travelers and their stories
You choose among eight travelers, each with a different origin, motivation, set of skills, and Path Actions. Path Actions are the context-specific commands that let you interact with the world. According to Nintendo’s listing, they can be used to battle townspeople, obtain items, or bring other characters along. The character stories are the backbone of the game, and critics single them out as one of its strengths.
Turn-based tactical combat
Combat is turn-based and tactical. It uses the series’ Break and Boost systems, which were carried over from the first game. Players can develop jobs and skills, so party building and progression are a central part of the experience.

Exploring the world
Nintendo describes sailing and a day-to-night cycle as part of the world, alongside the Path Actions above. Exploration is one of the features critics praised, though the listing gives no detail on how large the map is or how long a typical journey takes.
What critics praised, and where they pushed back
Selected critic excerpts on Metacritic praise the strategic combat, the customization options, the character stories, the exploration, the visuals, and the sound. Several excerpts say the sequel improves on its predecessor while still feeling close to the ideas of the first game. One excerpt notes small moments of grinding.
These are themes drawn from excerpts, not a numerical score. They are not a substitute for reading a full review, and no aggregate Metacritic score is established here.

Who will enjoy it, and who may not
The table below sets out the four comparison points that matter most for deciding whether this game suits you. The last row is the one where the evidence is thinnest.
| Comparison point | What the sources establish |
|---|---|
| Story structure | Eight travelers, each with their own origin, motivation, and story, set in the new world of Solistia. |
| Combat pace and depth | Turn-based tactical combat with Break and Boost, plus jobs and skills. Critics praise the strategy. One excerpt mentions grinding. |
| Visual style | HD-2D, which Square Enix describes as retro 2D characters placed in a 3D world. Critics praise the visuals. |
| Tolerance for a long adventure | No precise playtime is established. Critic excerpts reference lengthy play, which some readers may find a drawback. |
It is likely to suit fans of classic JRPG structure, anyone who enjoys extended character stories, and players who like building parties and developing jobs and skills.
It is less likely to suit players who want a brisk or action-led game. This is our inference from critics’ references to grinding and long play, not a verdict any reviewer reached.

What changed in the Switch 2 version?
Square Enix says the Switch 2 version was optimized from the original Switch release to improve resolution and frame rate. That is the publisher’s specification. No independent performance testing is established here, so treat the improvements as claims rather than measured results.
Nintendo lists the Switch 2 edition as a separate version. It cannot be played on the original Switch, and save data is incompatible between the Switch and Switch 2 versions. Keep this in mind if you already have progress on one console and plan to switch.

Before you buy, check the following:
- Confirm which console you own. If you have a Switch 2, the Switch 2 edition is the one that is optimized for that hardware.
- Check your regional store, because Square Enix notes that availability varies by region.
- If you plan to rely on Game Pass, check current catalog inclusion, since subscription lineups change.
- If you buy a physical Switch copy, search for “Octopath Traveler II Nintendo Switch game” and confirm the listing matches the platform you own.
How big is the series?
Two sales figures are available, and neither applies to Octopath Traveler II alone.
- Square Enix reports more than 6 million copies shipped and sold worldwide for the Octopath Traveler series, as of 2026.
- Nintendo reports more than 3 million copies sold worldwide for the first Octopath Traveler, which it says initially released in 2018. The year of the figure is not stated on the listing.
No separate unit sales figure for Octopath Traveler II has been published, so no reliable count exists for the sequel on its own.
