In a March 2011 interview, Octopart co-founder Sam Wurzel said the parts-search service had more than 440,000 unique visitors per month. That is a historical visitor count—not a current user estimate. Octopart’s newer published figures measure searches, offers, and BOM activity instead, so they cannot be compared directly with the 2011 number.
What is Octopart?
Octopart is an electronic-component search and data platform. Founded in 2006 by Sam Wurzel, Andres Morey, and Harish Agarwal, it launched its website in March 2007. Instead of selling components itself, the service gathers part information from multiple sources and helps people find matching components and sellers.
In the 2011 interview with EE Times, Wurzel described the challenge as collecting reliable data from many sources, correlating it into an integrated view of each part, and making that information searchable through an intuitive interface.

How does Octopart help people find a part?
Octopart brings component information and distributor listings together so users can search for a part and review available purchasing options. TechCrunch described the results as showing distributors that sell a part, their prices, and a link to buy it. That makes Octopart a discovery and comparison service rather than a single store: users can identify a part, compare listed availability and pricing, then follow a link to a distributor.

How many people use Octopart?
The answer depends on which year and measure you mean. The original headline refers to a statement made in 2011: Wurzel said Octopart served over 440,000 unique visitors per month who were searching for electronic parts. It should not be presented as a current traffic figure.

The 2022 figures appear in Octopart’s 2022 year-in-review report. Its current partner metrics are on Octopart’s partner-solutions page, while the separate 2024 figures appear in Altium’s 2024 survey summary. Searches, unique visitors, offers, parts added, and BOMs are different measures, reported for different periods and in different contexts; they should not be treated as interchangeable or combined into one audience trend.

It is best understood as a parts-search and data platform that connects buyers to distributors, not as the distributor selling the listed parts. In the 2011 interview, Wurzel said Octopart’s business model was connecting part buyers with distributors that paid for the traffic. He also said the company sold targeted display advertising to electronics audiences. Those statements describe the historical model discussed in that interview; they do not establish current commercial terms.

What should you check when comparing parts listings?
An aggregated listing is useful for narrowing a search, but the component record and seller listing remain important. Before ordering, verify the exact manufacturer part number and package, the relevant electrical or mechanical specifications, and the distributor’s current stock, price, lead time, and purchasing terms. A search result is not a substitute for checking the seller’s live listing and the part documentation.
For broader tool comparisons, useful criteria include distributor coverage, parametric-data quality and freshness, datasheet and CAD-model availability, BOM matching tools, stock and lead-time visibility, export or API integration, and geographic availability. The published sources establish Octopart’s aggregation, distributor links, and BOM/CAD-related capabilities, but do not provide a controlled head-to-head benchmark against every distributor site or component database.

Octopart’s partner-solutions page invites component manufacturers and distributors to connect their products with engineers and procurement teams. The page reports 4M+ average monthly searches, 208M+ offers processed and published daily, 173K+ BOMs uploaded or created in 2024, and 29K newsletter subscribers. These are Octopart’s partner-facing marketing figures, and they describe different kinds of activity. Program terms, commissions, and enrollment availability are not established by those metrics; organizations interested in participation should confirm current details directly with Octopart.
