On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union placed Sputnik 1 into orbit, making it the first artificial satellite to circle Earth. The compact, radio-transmitting sphere began the Space Age and became a Cold War turning point: its success intensified U.S. concern about Soviet rocket capabilities and accelerated American space and science programs.

What was Sputnik 1?

Sputnik 1 was the Soviet Union’s first artificial satellite: a polished sphere about 58 cm (22.8 inches) in diameter, with a mass of 83.6 kg (183.9 pounds), according to NASA’s historical overview. NASA’s anniversary account rounds its mass to 184 pounds. Four external antennas helped it transmit radio signals that listeners on Earth, including amateur radio operators, could monitor.

Its design was comparatively simple. Sputnik was not a satellite carrying a broad suite of scientific instruments; its signals and orbit themselves provided opportunities to test and observe.

When did the Soviet Union launch Sputnik?

The Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1 on October 4, 1957, from its rocket testing facility near Tyuratam in the Kazakh Republic. The date is the key milestone: Sputnik became the first artificial satellite placed in Earth orbit. NASA’s account of Sputnik and the origins of the Space Age and its historical overview document the launch and achievement.

What did Sputnik do?

Sputnik orbited Earth and transmitted a radio signal. NASA gives its orbital period as about 98 minutes; another NASA anniversary account rounds the period to about 90 minutes. The difference reflects rounding, not a different mission. Its orbit also offered a way to study the upper atmosphere: the rate at which a satellite loses altitude and eventually reenters depends in part on atmospheric density.

NASA lists several goals for the mission: demonstrate that a satellite could be placed in orbit, investigate upper-atmosphere density through the satellite’s orbital lifetime, test tracking methods and radio-wave propagation, and check pressurization principles. Those aims should not be confused with a large onboard science program. The NASA description of Sputnik 1 outlines the spacecraft and its objectives.

Why was Sputnik important?

A scientific project with strategic meaning

Sputnik launched during the International Geophysical Year (IGY), an international scientific effort running from July 1957 through December 1958 to study Earth and its environment. The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum describes the satellite as the Soviet Union’s contribution to the IGY’s satellite effort: a scientific undertaking that also carried enormous political weight.

Because placing a satellite in orbit required a powerful rocket, Sputnik’s success heightened American concern that Soviet rocket technology might also support long-range military missiles. The satellite itself was modest, but the launch demonstrated a capability with implications well beyond its radio signal.

A catalyst for U.S. programs, not their sole origin

The launch sharpened public and government attention to a perceived technological and missile gap. The United States responded with efforts to launch its own satellites and with broader increases in aerospace and science activity, including greater emphasis on education. NASA’s histories describe Sputnik as an important catalyst and accelerant, not the single cause of every U.S. space or science policy.

America’s first successful satellite was Explorer 1, launched on January 31, 1958. It followed Sputnik in the early U.S. response, but it was a separate milestone—not the first artificial satellite. The sequence and institutional changes unfolded over time: NASA’s account of the story of Explorer 1 describes the American satellite effort, while its history of Sputnik’s origins and consequences connects the launch to the formation of NASA.

How did Sputnik change the space race?

Sputnik made the competition over spaceflight visible and urgent. The Soviet Union had achieved the first orbital satellite, while the U.S. response involved both competing technically and organizing a stronger civilian space effort. NASA’s creation was part of that broader response, alongside existing military, scientific, and political developments; it did not happen instantaneously on launch night.

The launch’s lasting significance is therefore twofold: it opened the era of artificial satellites and gave Cold War rivalry a striking new arena. Sputnik was a small spacecraft, but its successful orbit changed how both countries understood the strategic and scientific stakes of space.
