October 2026 brings two meteor-shower peaks, Saturn at opposition, a Jupiter-Moon occultation, and a close pairing of the Moon and the Pleiades. The best viewing time depends on your location: check local moonset, dawn, and the horizon before heading out. The month’s events do not mean all eight planets will be visible together or without optical aid.

October 2026 skywatching calendar

Date What to see Viewing notes
October 4 Saturn at opposition Rises around sunset and remains visible for much of the night. NASA’s October skywatching guide
October 6 Jupiter occulted by the Moon Visible across much of North America before dawn; exact timing varies by location. NASA’s event guide
October 8–9 Draconid meteor shower peak Peak begins around 9 p.m. EDT on October 8 and continues into October 9. NASA expects a few meteors per hour; a nearly new Moon means little moonlight interference. NASA’s event guide
October 21–22 Orionid meteor shower peak Best approached after midnight from a dark site; aim to observe before dawn after the Moon sets. Moonlight can wash out fainter meteors. NASA’s Orionids guide
October 27–28 Moon near the Pleiades Look east in the evening as they rise. The cluster is visible to the unaided eye; binoculars or a telescope show more detail. NASA’s October skywatching guide

When to watch October’s meteor showers

Draconids: evening of October 8 into October 9

The Draconids peak on Thursday evening, October 8, into Friday morning, October 9. NASA puts the start around 9 p.m. EDT and describes the shower as modest, with a few meteors per hour rather than a guaranteed high rate. The radiant lies in Draco, but meteors can streak across a broad area of sky, so watch the sky rather than fixating on the constellation. NASA’s event guide

A nearly new Moon should leave little moonlight interference. Find a dark spot with an open view, give your eyes time to adjust, and be patient.

Orionids: night of October 21–22

The Orionids are active from October 2 through November 7 in 2026, with their peak on the night of October 21–22. They are debris shed by comet 1P/Halley. Under dark skies, NASA lists an estimated 10–20 meteors per hour; in suburban areas with ambient light, NASA’s October event article estimates about 3–6 per hour. These are estimates for different observing conditions, not a promised count for any one viewer. The meteors travel at about 41 miles (66 kilometers) per second. • 7X MAGNIFICATION: With a wide field of view that reveals a larger portion of the night sky, Cometron is ideal for panning across the Milky Way, exploring constellations, and viewing large objects like comets.
  • 50MM OBJECTIVES WITH MULTI-COATED OPTICS: Large objective lenses gather more light while multiple layers of anti-reflective coatings boost light transmission. Views are bright and detailed with increased contrast and resolution.
  • GREAT FOR DAY AND NIGHT USE: Not just for astronomy—these binoculars are also great for birdwatching, hiking, and scenic viewing with a close focus of 26.2 feet.
  • TRIPOD-ADAPTABLE FOR STABLE VIEWING: Designed with a built-in tripod adapter socket so you can mount the binoculars on a standard tripod (adapter not included) for shake-free, extended viewing sessions.

A bright waxing gibbous Moon will obscure some fainter meteors. Plan around your local moonset and dawn: NASA recommends watching before dawn after the Moon sets. Both hemispheres can observe after midnight from a dark location. Lie back and look across as much of the sky as possible; the radiant helps identify Orionids but is not the only place to look. NASA’s Orionids guide

What you need for meteor watching

You do not need binoculars or a telescope to see meteors. Magnification narrows your field of view, which works against watching for streaks anywhere in the sky. Choose darkness over equipment, and give your eyes time to adapt. As NASA presenter Raquel Villanueva advises, “Give your eyes time to adjust and look up.” NASA’s October skywatching guide

Jupiter and the Moon before dawn on October 6

The Moon passes in front of Jupiter in a lunar occultation early before dawn on October 6. Much of North America is in the viewing area, but the time—and whether the event is visible from your location—varies geographically. Check a location-specific sky guide before setting an alarm. The event is visible without optical aid; binoculars may also reveal Jupiter’s moons. NASA’s event guide NASA skywatching resources

The Moon and Pleiades on October 27–28

Look east in the evening as the Moon and the Pleiades rise close together. The cluster appears as a fuzzy group of six or seven stars to the unaided eye; binoculars or a telescope reveal more of its detail. NASA’s October skywatching guide

Other planets in October

A Space.com October guide describes Mercury low in the west-southwest after sunset during the first 20 days of the month, Venus low in bright twilight before its October 24 inferior conjunction, Mars in the morning sky, Jupiter before sunrise, and Saturn visible through much of the night. Neptune is near Saturn on October 23, but it requires binoculars or a telescope; this is secondary-source guidance. The available October information does not establish a complete Uranus schedule, or that all eight planets will be easy to see or visible at once. Space.com’s October planet guide

Make the view work from your location

  • For meteor showers, choose a dark site and watch a wide area of sky rather than staring at the radiant.
  • For the Orionids, check local moonset and dawn so you can use the darker pre-dawn window.
  • For the Jupiter occultation, use a location-specific forecast; its timing varies across the viewing area.
  • For planets and the Pleiades, account for your latitude, twilight, and an unobstructed horizon. Exact rise and set times are local.
