October 2026 has three standout planet events: Saturn reaches opposition on October 4, the Moon occults Jupiter for some observers on October 6, and Mars passes through the Beehive Cluster on October 11. The Jupiter occultation is limited to parts of the world; elsewhere, the Moon and Jupiter appear close together without Jupiter disappearing. Exact viewing times depend on your location.

October 2026 planet events at a glance

Date What to look for Where and when
October 4 Saturn at opposition Visible much of the night; rises around sunset. NASA
October 6 The Moon passes in front of Jupiter for some observers Parts of North and Central America and some locations in Africa; elsewhere it is a close pairing. Local circumstances vary. timeanddate
October 11 Mars crosses the Beehive Cluster (M44) Morning sky; binoculars help frame Mars and the cluster together. Space.com
October 21–22 Orionid meteor shower peak Look before dawn after moonset for the best chance to see fainter meteors. NASA

These are calendar dates, not universal observing appointments. Your local date, rise time and visibility can differ with time zone, horizon and location. Use a current astronomy app or sky chart set to your location for practical viewing times.

When is Saturn at opposition in October 2026?

Saturn reaches opposition on October 4. Opposition means Earth lies between Saturn and the Sun, so Saturn appears opposite the Sun in our sky. It rises around sunset and remains visible for much of the night, making it a convenient time to find the planet. NASA’s October guide explains the event and date.

For telescope viewers, Saturn’s rings are tilted about 7 degrees from edge-on, according to Joe Rao’s October planet guide. That relatively narrow profile is worth keeping in mind: opposition makes Saturn well placed for observing, but does not mean the rings will look wide open.

When can I see Jupiter disappear behind the Moon?

The Moon passes in front of Jupiter on October 6, an event called an occultation. It is visible only from a limited path, including parts of North and Central America and some locations in Africa. In places outside that path, the Moon and Jupiter appear close together, but the Moon does not cover Jupiter. timeanddate’s October sky guide gives the broad regional picture; a local prediction is needed to confirm visibility from your town.

There is no single disappearance or reappearance time that applies everywhere: the Moon’s position against Jupiter changes with the observer’s location. Check a current, location-specific sky planner for contact times before going out. For the North American circumstances described by Space.com, the Moon is about 20% illuminated and the event occurs before sunrise; those details are not a universal local timetable.

When does Mars meet the Beehive Cluster?

Mars moves through the Beehive Cluster (M44), in Cancer, on October 11. It is a morning-sky event. Binoculars are a useful optional aid because their wider view can help keep the planet and cluster in the same frame; the event can still be enjoyed without them. The date and binocular suggestion are in Joe Rao’s guide. Check a local sky chart or planetarium app for when Mars rises and when the pairing is best placed from your location.

What planets are visible in October 2026?

For the broad monthly sequence, look for Mercury low in the early evening, Saturn through much of the night, Mars after midnight and Jupiter before sunrise. These are not equally easy targets, and the sequence is a general guide rather than a promise of the same view at every latitude.

  • Saturn: The most convenient of the month’s headline planets for an evening start, rising around sunset at opposition.
  • Mars: A later-night and morning target, with its Beehive passage on October 11.
  • Jupiter: A pre-dawn target, with the October 6 lunar occultation visible only along part of the globe.

The detailed viewing sequence and visibility notes are from Space.com’s October 2026 planet guide.

Can you see the Orionids in October 2026?

The Orionids peak overnight from October 21 into October 22. A bright waxing gibbous Moon will wash out some of the fainter meteors. NASA recommends finding a dark location and looking in the hours before dawn, after moonset. NASA’s October skywatching tips cover the peak and moonlight; timeanddate also recommends letting your eyes adjust, watching a broad area of sky and checking cloud cover.

These observing events are for twilight or nighttime. Do not look at the Sun, or attempt to observe objects close to it before sunset, without appropriate purpose-built eye protection; looking directly at the Sun can permanently damage eyesight. timeanddate’s observing guidance provides this safety warning.
