Short answer: Nintendo’s Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2 is a full modern rebuild, not a texture upgrade. It keeps the recognizable adventure and, according to hands-on previews, the original dungeon-puzzle logic, while changing the visuals, camera, movement, audio presentation, cutscenes and optional activities. New jump-and-dash controls, microphone ocarina input, the Hall of Fallen Heroes and the ZELDA NOTES service add systems that never existed on Nintendo 64.

The remake is scheduled for November 5, 2026, and the complete launch build is not publicly available as of October 16, 2026. That means the broad differences are clear, but a definitive room-by-room dungeon change list, final combat details and final performance measurements are not. Choose Switch 2 for convenience and presentation; choose the N64 release for the unmodified 1998 experience.

At a glance: what changes and what stays familiar

Area 1998 Nintendo 64 release 2026 Switch 2 remake What is confirmed before launch
World and story Original Hyrule adventure and presentation Same core adventure rebuilt for Switch 2, with expanded presentation Core quest is intended to remain faithful
Graphics Low-resolution, 1998-era polygons and textures Completely overhauled, reimagined visuals Preview impressions describe much brighter, more vivid environments
Movement and camera Original N64 control model and camera behavior Jumping, dashing, enhanced controls and modern camera movement Nintendo confirms the new movement language; a complete button map is not published
Combat Original timing, targeting and control behavior Refined combat and movement are reported in previews Encounter-by-encounter changes and speedrun implications remain unconfirmed
Audio and dialogue Unvoiced presentation and synthesized/sample-based soundtrack Fully voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue and symphonic orchestral music Final treatment of Link’s voice is not confirmed
Dungeons Original rooms, puzzles and progression Previewed dungeon logic appears one-to-one, with modern traversal and presentation around it No authoritative room-by-room change log exists yet
Optional content No built-in boss-rematch gallery or app service Hall of Fallen Heroes, timed boss rematches, microphone melodies and ZELDA NOTES These systems are described by Nintendo or hands-on coverage
Hardware Nintendo 64 or an authorized re-release, depending on edition Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive; TV, tabletop and handheld modes Nintendo’s US listing gives a 27 GB estimated file size and a $59.99 price

The table separates established features from details that require the final game. In particular, “faithful” does not mean every animation, exploit, enemy behavior or speedrun route will be identical.

What exactly is being compared?

The comparison is between the original Nintendo 64 game released in 1998 and Nintendo’s new Switch 2 remake, scheduled for November 5, 2026. The Switch 2 edition is listed as a console exclusive, so it requires Nintendo’s current-generation hardware rather than a standard Switch or Nintendo 64.

Nintendo Selects - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo 3DS)
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D takes the Nintendo 64 classic - one of the most critically acclaimed games ever made - and returns it to the Nintendo 3DS & Nintendo 2DS system with the added depth and realism of stunning visuals
  • Solve puzzles, travel through time and explore the immersive world
  • The graphical upgrades and three-dimensional depth breathe new life into the expansive world of Hyrule New controls using the Nintendo 3DS & Nintendo 2DS system's technologies
  • Switching items has never been simpler or quicker, with a touch-based inventory system Compatible with all consoles in the 3DS family

Ocarina of Time 3D, released for Nintendo 3DS in 2011, is a separate remake. Its glasses-free stereoscopic 3D, Circle Pad control, touch inventory and gyro aiming should not be attributed to the Switch 2 version. Those features are useful historical context, but they are not evidence of a feature in the 2026 game.

Because the final build is not available on the current date of October 16, 2026, previews can establish the remake’s direction but cannot settle every implementation detail. Treat claims about an undisclosed dungeon, a relocated item, a new boss or a changed enemy placement as unverified until Nintendo publishes final documentation or players can inspect the released game.

Graphics and art direction

The N64 look

The 1998 release was designed for Nintendo 64 hardware. Its environments use low-resolution textures, visibly angular geometry and a limited visual vocabulary shaped by the console’s processing and memory constraints. That look is part of the game’s historical identity: silhouettes, fog, texture seams and simple lighting all contribute to how players remember Hyrule.

The Switch 2 rebuild

Nintendo describes the new edition as “completely reborn” with “completely overhauled visuals” and “reimagined visuals.” TechRadar’s hands-on preview calls the art-style change the biggest and most drastic difference, highlighting vivid greens and cerulean blues. Those are preview observations rather than laboratory measurements. Nintendo has not supplied a final resolution, frame-rate target or complete graphics specification in the material available before launch.

In practical terms, expect the remake to communicate space, materials and lighting more clearly than the N64 version. The comparison is not simply sharper textures pasted over the old models: environments, character models and the overall presentation have been rebuilt for contemporary hardware. That can make familiar rooms easier to read while also making them feel less like the deliberately stark 1998 original.

What a visual overhaul does not prove

  • A brighter color palette does not establish that the game has a different story tone or altered dungeon layout.
  • More detailed geometry does not prove that collision boundaries, item locations or enemy placements changed.
  • Preview footage cannot establish final resolution, frame pacing, loading behavior or performance in every mode.

Those distinctions matter for players deciding whether they want a faithful historical artifact or a modern audiovisual interpretation.

Camera, movement and combat

Jumping and dashing

Nintendo’s product description says players can “jump and dash through the action with enhanced controls and modern camera movements.” The original N64 game’s movement was built around its older control model and a camera that frequently required deliberate positioning. Adding explicit jump and dash actions changes how Link can approach space, evade danger and move through ordinary terrain, even when the destination and puzzle objective remain familiar.

Modern camera behavior

A modern camera can keep more of the environment visible, reduce manual camera correction and frame movement through larger spaces more naturally. It can also change the timing of encounters that depended on the N64 camera’s fixed angles or limited perspective. Nintendo has not published a complete camera specification, so it is not possible to say that every original angle, exploit or targeting setup has been preserved.

Combat refinements

GamesRadar’s 2026 coverage reports refined combat and movement improvements. That supports a meaningful mechanical difference from the N64 control feel, but it does not provide a frame-by-frame combat specification. Do not assume that every attack window, enemy reaction, glitch, damage interaction or speedrun route is unchanged. Conversely, a report of refined controls does not prove that the remake redesigned every encounter.

The safest description is that the remake modernizes how Link moves, aims and navigates fights while retaining the recognizable adventure. Players who value the exact rhythm of the original controller will notice the change immediately; players who found the N64 camera restrictive are the intended beneficiaries.

Audio, dialogue and acting

Voiced and expanded cutscenes

Nintendo lists fully voiced cutscenes and expanded dialogue among the remake’s headline additions. Scenes that were conveyed through text boxes, gestures and short vocal effects in 1998 can now carry more spoken context and a more cinematic delivery. The final build’s treatment of Link’s voice still needs confirmation, so it is premature to describe a specific performance for him.

Orchestral music

The remake includes full symphonic orchestral music. The N64 original uses its synthesized and sample-based soundtrack, whose timbres and technical limitations are inseparable from the 1998 presentation. Nintendo has not published a track-by-track arrangement list, so individual rearrangements should not be treated as confirmed.

Together, voice, expanded dialogue and orchestration change the way the story is paced and heard. They do not, by themselves, establish a rewritten plot. The available descriptions support a richer presentation of the same core adventure.

Dungeons and puzzle structure

What previews indicate

GamesRadar reports that the remake appears “one-to-one” with the N64 original “down to the details of every dungeon puzzle.” TechRadar played the entire Forest Temple and described it as faithful while still additive in its surrounding presentation. These observations support a conservative conclusion: the main dungeon progression and puzzle logic appear preserved, while traversal, camera behavior, visuals and quality-of-life systems change around them.

What “faithful” means for a playthrough

A player returning to the remake should recognize the sequence of objectives, the logic behind key puzzles and the role of the major dungeons. Visual clarity or new movement options may make some actions easier to execute, but that is different from replacing the puzzle’s underlying solution. A familiar room can feel new because lighting, geometry, camera framing and movement have changed even when the required reasoning has not.

What is not yet authoritative

Nintendo has not released a complete dungeon map or final change log. Only selected areas have been publicly previewed. There is therefore no reliable basis, before launch, for publishing a room-by-room inventory of altered switches, item placements, enemy relocations, new dungeon wings or additional bosses. Any alleged change in those categories should be labeled unverified until launch documentation exists.

This limitation also applies to sequence breaking. New jumping or dashing could open routes that were impossible on N64, but no complete analysis of collision, exploits or speedrun legality is available before release.

New systems and optional activities

Hall of Fallen Heroes

Nintendo’s overview material introduces the Hall of Fallen Heroes, a location containing statues of defeated monsters. Players can challenge bosses again rather than replaying the entire story to reach a fight. GamesRadar reports that each rematch has a timer and records the completion time, creating a built-in per-boss speedrun tracker.

This is optional content outside the original N64 release. It gives experienced players a structured reason to optimize individual encounters and gives returning players a way to revisit set pieces without a full campaign reset. The available descriptions do not establish whether rematches add new attacks, altered arenas or reward items, so those details should not be assumed.

Microphone ocarina input

The Switch 2 remake supports microphone input. When Link has learned a melody, humming or playing that melody near the console’s microphone makes the in-game ocarina respond. This is an additional input method, not evidence that every song must be performed acoustically. Players who prefer conventional controls should wait for the final control documentation to confirm the alternative input options and accessibility behavior.

ZELDA NOTES

Nintendo’s product information lists ZELDA NOTES, a Nintendo Switch App service connected to the remake. It records accomplishments, sets image-based location challenges and lets users create and share ocarina melodies. These features extend the game beyond the single-player cartridge-style experience of the N64 release by adding tracking, user-created prompts and sharing through a companion service.

Because ZELDA NOTES is a service feature, its availability and exact operation can depend on Nintendo’s app support, account requirements and regional rollout. The listed functions are the confirmed scope; additional social or community tools should not be inferred.

How the two versions feel during a normal playthrough

Exploration

On N64, exploration is shaped by the original camera, movement acceleration and visual limits. The Switch 2 version adds jump and dash actions, a modernized camera and a rebuilt visual field. Expect navigation to feel more immediate and spaces to be easier to parse, while the recognizable destinations and adventure structure remain the anchor.

Puzzle solving

The evidence available before launch points to the same core dungeon-puzzle reasoning. The remake’s contribution is the context around those puzzles: clearer presentation, different movement affordances and potentially more readable interactions. Without a final map, it is not possible to identify every place where an updated control could change the practical difficulty.

Fighting and replay

Refined combat and the Hall of Fallen Heroes make the Switch 2 release more attractive to players who want repeatable challenges. The N64 version remains the reference point for the original timing, controller feel and unmodified glitch environment. Neither version should be described as universally superior: they serve different reasons for replaying the same adventure.

Hardware, modes and purchase differences

Question Switch 2 remake N64 original
Required hardware Nintendo Switch 2; the game is listed as exclusive to that system Nintendo 64 hardware or an authorized re-release, depending on the edition
Play modes TV, tabletop and handheld modes are listed Depends on the original hardware or re-release used
US list price $59.99 on Nintendo’s US product listing Varies by the particular original cartridge, service or authorized re-release
Estimated download size 27 GB on Nintendo’s US listing Not applicable to the original cartridge itself

The $59.99 price and 27 GB size are the values shown on Nintendo’s US page; they are not universal regional prices or a guarantee that the final installed size cannot change. Regional availability and pricing should be checked separately from the gameplay comparison.

Why the 3DS remake should not be used as a feature checklist

The 2011 3DS edition introduced glasses-free stereoscopic 3D, Circle Pad analogue control, a touch-screen inventory and gyro aiming. Those changes demonstrate that Nintendo has previously adapted Ocarina of Time to new hardware, but they do not establish features for the Switch 2 remake.

In particular, a Switch 2 comparison should not claim that the remake uses a touch inventory, stereoscopic display or gyro aiming unless Nintendo documents those features for this release. The confirmed Switch 2 additions are different: jump and dash movement, modern camera behavior, microphone ocarina input, voiced and expanded cutscenes, orchestral music, Hall of Fallen Heroes and ZELDA NOTES.

Which version should you play?

Choose the Switch 2 remake if you want

  • Modern movement with explicit jumping and dashing.
  • A contemporary camera and reported combat refinements.
  • Rebuilt visuals rather than the N64’s low-resolution polygonal presentation.
  • Fully voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue and symphonic orchestral music.
  • Optional timed boss rematches with recorded completion times.
  • Microphone melody input and ZELDA NOTES tracking or sharing features.
  • TV, tabletop or handheld play on Switch 2.

Choose the N64 original if you want

  • The historical 1998 presentation, including its original visual and audio character.
  • The exact N64 control feel and camera behavior.
  • The unmodified glitch, exploit and speedrun environment of the original release.
  • A version whose dungeon rooms, enemy behavior and technical limits are already documented in its released form.

Choose both if you want a preservation-and-modernization comparison

Playing the N64 game first establishes the original pacing, controller assumptions and audiovisual style. The Switch 2 remake then shows which parts of that design survive a contemporary rebuild and which parts are expressed through new movement, camera and presentation systems. Because the remake appears faithful in its central dungeon structure, the two versions can be compared directly without treating them as unrelated games.

What to verify after launch

A definitive comparison should wait for the released game to answer questions that previews cannot settle:

  • Whether every dungeon room, item placement and enemy location matches the N64 version.
  • How jump and dash interact with collision, sequence breaks and known glitches.
  • The final button map, camera options and accessibility settings.
  • Link’s final voice treatment and the complete list of voiced scenes.
  • The exact orchestral arrangements and whether any music is newly composed.
  • Final resolution, frame-rate behavior and performance across TV, tabletop and handheld modes.
  • Whether Hall of Fallen Heroes rematches alter arenas, attacks, rewards or only add timed records.
  • The account, app and regional requirements for every ZELDA NOTES function.

Until those points are documented, the accurate description is “faithful core adventure, substantially modernized around it,” not “complete dungeon redesign.”

Verdict

The Switch 2 remake is the better fit for players who want Ocarina of Time with modern controls, a contemporary camera, rebuilt graphics, voiced and expanded story scenes, orchestral audio and optional replay systems. The N64 original remains the choice for authenticity: its 1998 visuals, sound, controller behavior and glitch environment are the experience the remake is reinterpreting. The available evidence supports major modernization without proving a wholesale rewrite of dungeon progression or puzzle logic.
