Activision chief marketing officer Tyler Bahl does not see Nintendo’s reported The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake as the main commercial rival to Grand Theft Auto 6. Speaking to The Game Business, Bahl called GTA 6 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 “the two biggest games of the year,” adding, “no offense to Zelda.”
The three releases are nevertheless clustered within 27 days: the remake is reported for November 5, 2026, Modern Warfare 4 for October 23, and GTA 6 for November 19. That calendar creates a major holiday-season collision, but the games do not compete for exactly the same hardware or audience.
What Activision said about Zelda, GTA 6 and Call of Duty
Bahl’s judgment is a marketing and market-attention assessment, not a sales result. He identified GTA 6 and Modern Warfare 4 as 2026’s two biggest games and explicitly excluded the Ocarina remake from that top pair.
He also described GTA 6 as a potential benefit to Call of Duty rather than only a threat. “I think, in a lot of ways, more people coming into the dashboards, more people taking the dust off their Xbox or PlayStation and starting to play again and loading up that experience is going to be more eyeballs for us,” Bahl said. His argument is that a huge GTA launch could increase overall console engagement and expose players to other games and services.

Reported release dates and the two-week gap
| Game | Reported release date | Reported platform position | Calendar effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 | October 23, 2026 | Broad console and PC release expected in the comparison | Arrives first and can build momentum before the November launches |
| The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake | November 5, 2026 | Reportedly exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2 | Launches two weeks before GTA 6 |
| Grand Theft Auto 6 | November 19, 2026 | Not reported for Nintendo Switch 2 | Arrives after the remake and becomes the late-November event |
The November 5 and November 19 dates leave 14 days between the Zelda remake and GTA 6. That spacing prompted comparisons to a shared cultural release moment, even though a Switch 2 owner cannot buy GTA 6 for the same system based on the platforms reported here.
How purchase-intent estimates compare
GamesRadar reported Circana 2026 estimates from analyst Mat Piscatella for the broad US console-and-PC population:
| Game | Reported purchase intent | How to interpret the figure |
|---|---|---|
| Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 | About 15% | Estimated share of US console and PC players intending to buy |
| Ocarina of Time remake | 10.4% | Estimated share across all US console and PC players |
Piscatella said the remake’s rate is higher when calculated only against potential Switch 2 players. That distinction matters: dividing intent by every console and PC player includes people who do not own, or do not plan to own, Nintendo’s new hardware. The two percentages therefore do not measure identical addressable markets, and they are intentions rather than completed purchases.
Why the remake can avoid a direct GTA 6 fight
Different hardware
The reported Switch 2 exclusivity gives Nintendo a protected hardware audience. GTA 6 is not reported for Switch 2, so the two launches cannot be played on the same Nintendo system. Modern Warfare 4, by contrast, is positioned as a broad console-and-PC release and therefore has more direct overlap with GTA’s established console audience.

Different audience behavior
GTA 6 is expected to be a large-scale open-world event, while a faithful remake of a classic Nintendo adventure primarily targets Zelda fans and Switch 2 buyers. Some players will want both, but the products do not require the same platform purchase or represent the same type of play session.
Nintendo’s timing bet
Analyst Aakash Gupta described release calendars as “a game of chicken” and said Nintendo “didn’t swerve” because GTA 6 does not run on its hardware and the audiences “barely overlap.” In his analysis, the remake gets two full weeks of attention before GTA 6 arrives. He also argued that Nintendo is unusually able to make that kind of date-setting bet because of the loyalty of its fanbase.

Which game is expected to be bigger?
On Activision’s stated hierarchy, GTA 6 and Modern Warfare 4 are the leading 2026 releases, with Zelda outside that pair. The available intent estimates point in the same direction for the broad US market: about 15% for Modern Warfare 4 versus 10.4% for the remake. Those figures do not settle worldwide sales, revenue or critical reception, and the Zelda number could look stronger within the smaller population of potential Switch 2 buyers.
GTA 6 also carries unusually high commercial expectations. GamesRadar reproduced Gupta’s statement that GTA 5 made $1 billion in three days in 2013, and his citation of a DFC Intelligence forecast projecting $3.2 billion in first-year GTA 6 revenue. The first figure is quoted commentary rather than a publisher filing in the available material; the second is a forecast, not a realized result. Neither should be treated as a guaranteed outcome for GTA 6.
Best Value
What the launch sequence means for players
- Call of Duty players: the October 23 release gives Modern Warfare 4 the earliest position and lets Activision establish engagement before the November launches.
- Switch 2 owners: the reported November 5 remake date provides two weeks to play Zelda before GTA 6’s reported arrival, although GTA 6 would require different hardware.
- Players buying across platforms: the dates are close enough to compete for time and holiday budgets, but platform exclusivity reduces direct substitution.
Why the “rival” question has no single answer
If “rival” means the game most likely to dominate broad industry attention, Bahl places GTA 6 and Modern Warfare 4 ahead of Zelda. If it means the release most likely to compete for a particular player’s time, the answer depends on that player’s hardware and preferences. The remake’s reported Switch 2 exclusivity limits its overall reach but may concentrate demand among Nintendo’s most committed audience.
Former Nintendo of America PR manager Krysta Yang illustrated that distinction when GamesRadar quoted her saying that, if a faithful remake launched on the same day as GTA, she would play GTA. Nintendo’s reported two-week lead avoids that exact same-day choice while preserving a high-profile November window.
