Short answer: Nintendo has announced a ground-up The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time release for Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5, 2026. It is listed as a Switch 2 exclusive digital game with enhanced controls, including jump and dash actions, modern camera movement, HDR output, VRR output on compatible televisions and linear PCM surround sound. Nintendo has not yet published the complete button map, save-slot details, automatic-save timing, frame-rate target, resolution modes or input-lag measurements. This article reflects the information officially available on October 15, 2026, before launch.

What is actually releasing on Switch 2?

There are two different ways to play Ocarina of Time on Nintendo’s current hardware, and they should not be treated as the same product.

Version Availability Controls Display and audio features Controller context
Switch 2 remake Listed for November 5, 2026; digital edition; Switch 2 exclusive Enhanced controls with jump, dash and modern camera movement; complete button layout not yet published HDR output, VRR output on compatible TVs and linear PCM surround sound Nintendo has not confirmed an N64-style control mode or recommended N64 controller layout
Nintendo 64–Nintendo Classics version Classic-library release rather than the new remake Original-style Nintendo 64 mapping through the Classics software Features depend on the Nintendo Classics implementation and connected equipment The official Nintendo 64 Controller pairs wirelessly with Switch 2 and is designed for this library

Nintendo describes the new game this way: “Now Link must become the Hero of Time and save the kingdom in this classic tale, built from the ground up for the Nintendo Switch™ 2 system.” That wording indicates a new presentation and control design, not simply the Nintendo 64 software running through an emulator.

How do the Switch 2 remake controls work?

Jump and dash are explicitly advertised

The Switch 2 store listing calls out the ability to jump and dash. Those are the clearest differences from the traditional control model. In the original game, Link’s movement and context-sensitive actions were designed around the Nintendo 64 controller, with many actions inferred from terrain, targeting and the situation on screen. Nintendo’s wording suggests that the remake gives players direct modern movement options, but it does not explain whether jumping is always available, tied to a context action, or limited by a particular gameplay state.

Nintendo Switch™ 2 Pro Controller
  • HD Rumble 2
  • Motion controls
  • Built-in amiibo functionality*
  • Capture Button
  • C Button for GameChat**

Because no button-by-button diagram has been published, do not assume that jump and dash are assigned to specific face buttons, sticks, triggers or paddles. Nintendo also has not stated whether the controls can be fully remapped, whether multiple presets will ship, or whether accessibility options alter the layout.

Modern camera movement is part of the redesign

Nintendo also advertises modern camera movements. That phrase confirms a camera update, but it does not establish a particular camera mode, sensitivity range, lock-on behavior or inversion setting. Players familiar with the original should expect the remake’s camera to be designed around contemporary dual-stick conventions, while waiting for the final manual or in-game settings to learn the exact behavior.

What is not confirmed yet

  • No official button map or control diagram.
  • No confirmation of remapping, sensitivity sliders, inversion choices or control presets.
  • No confirmation that the remake includes a dedicated Nintendo 64 control option.
  • No statement identifying which controllers support every enhanced action.

These omissions matter if you are buying a controller specifically for the remake. The safest conclusion before launch is that Nintendo is targeting modern controls, but the final layout must be verified in the game’s documentation or settings after release.

Can you use the Nintendo 64 Controller on Switch 2?

Yes, for the Nintendo 64–Nintendo Classics library. Nintendo’s support information says the official Nintendo 64 Controller is designed for that library, pairs wirelessly with Switch 2 and is intended to reproduce the original Nintendo 64 feel.

Rank #2
Nintendo Joy-Con™ 2 (L)/(R) Light Purple/Light Green
  • Only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.

That is a clear recommendation for the Classics version, not a confirmation about the remake. Nintendo has not said that the new Switch 2 release uses the original N64 layout as its preferred scheme, nor has it confirmed that every remake action—including jump and dash—maps naturally to the N64 controller. If your goal is the classic control experience, use the N64 Controller with the Nintendo 64–Nintendo Classics version. If your goal is the ground-up remake, wait for Nintendo’s final compatibility and mapping details before treating that controller as a guaranteed fit.

How saves and cloud backup work

Save Data Cloud requires Nintendo Switch Online

Nintendo’s product information states that a Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for Save Data Cloud backup. That requirement applies to backing up supported save data to Nintendo’s cloud service; it is separate from the game’s ability to maintain a save locally on the console.

Automatic saves and save slots are not announced

The available official information does not specify how often the remake saves automatically, how many manual save slots it provides, whether there are separate files for different players, or whether its save implementation differs from the Nintendo Classics version. Those details should be treated as not yet announced, rather than inferred from the Nintendo 64 original or from another Switch game.

Membership lapses and retention

Nintendo’s service FAQ says cloud backup covers the vast majority of Switch 2 and Switch games, but Nintendo cannot guarantee that cloud data will be retained after an extended period without an active membership. If long-term recovery matters, maintain the membership needed for cloud access and do not regard an old cloud copy as a permanent archive.

Nintendo Joy-Con 2 (L)/(R) Light Blue/Light Red
  • The updated Joy-Con 2 controllers have motion controls and HD rumble 2, along with the new C Button for easy GameChat* access and all-new mouse controls in compatible games.
  • This set includes both a left and right Joy-Con 2 controller (along with a pair of Joy-Con 2 straps)—perfect for local multiplayer with a friend in compatible games.
  • Includes two Joy-Con 2 straps.
  • Only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.

A sensible launch-day backup routine

  1. Confirm that your Nintendo Account has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership if you want cloud backup.
  2. After creating a meaningful save, open the console’s save-data management controls and verify that the game is included in cloud backup.
  3. Check the most recent backup date before moving between consoles or deleting local software.
  4. Do not assume that the remake and Nintendo Classics version share save files; no cross-version transfer has been announced.

What performance and display features are confirmed?

HDR output

The Switch 2 listing confirms HDR output. You need a compatible HDR television or monitor, and the display chain must support the feature for it to be visible. The listing does not state a specific HDR format, peak brightness target or image-quality mode.

VRR output

Variable refresh rate output is supported on compatible TVs. VRR can help a display synchronize its refresh behavior with changing frame delivery, but Nintendo has not published a frame-rate target or a test showing how often the game uses the display’s full VRR range.

Linear PCM surround sound

The game supports linear PCM surround sound. The result depends on your console audio settings, receiver or soundbar and speaker configuration. Nintendo has not provided a channel layout, bitrate specification or mix details in the listed information.

Numbers Nintendo has not published

  • No official frames-per-second target.
  • No resolution or graphics-mode table.
  • No measured input-lag figure.
  • No battery-life estimate for handheld or portable play.
  • No independent launch performance test is available in the pre-release information.

Consequently, claims that the game runs at a particular frame rate, resolution or latency should be treated as unverified until Nintendo or a dated independent test publishes those measurements.

How Switch 2 compatibility guidance applies

Nintendo’s general Switch 2 guidance says compatible Switch software can run on Switch 2, while some games receive updates or upgrades that improve performance. Compatibility is title-specific. That guidance is useful for existing Switch games, but it does not replace the dedicated listing for the new Ocarina of Time remake, which is explicitly presented as a Switch 2 exclusive. It also does not establish that the Nintendo Classics version and the remake share graphics settings, controls or save behavior.

Which version should you choose?

Choose the Switch 2 remake if you want

  • A new presentation built specifically for Switch 2.
  • Directly advertised jump and dash actions.
  • Modern camera movement.
  • HDR and VRR output on compatible displays.
  • Linear PCM surround sound.

Choose Nintendo 64–Nintendo Classics if you want

  • The classic-library route rather than a ground-up remake.
  • Controls intended to reproduce the Nintendo 64 experience.
  • Use of the official Nintendo 64 Controller, which Nintendo says pairs wirelessly with Switch 2 for this library.

The remake is the relevant choice for modern movement and camera features. The Classics version is the clearly documented choice for an authentic N64-style controller setup.

Pre-release checklist for buyers

  1. Check the date: the remake is listed for November 5, 2026, so information available on October 15, 2026 is necessarily pre-release.
  2. Confirm the product: distinguish the Switch 2 remake from the Nintendo 64–Nintendo Classics version before purchasing or downloading.
  3. Match your display: use an HDR- and VRR-compatible television if you want the advertised output features.
  4. Plan cloud backup: keep Nintendo Switch Online active if Save Data Cloud backup is important to you.
  5. Choose a controller by version: the N64 Controller is documented for Nintendo Classics; remake support and mapping remain unconfirmed.
  6. Wait for final documentation: look for Nintendo’s launch manual or in-game control screen for the exact buttons, save behavior and settings.

Nintendo says cloud backup covers the vast majority of Switch 2 and Switch games, but it does not guarantee retention after an extended period without membership.

Will the game run at 60 frames per second?

No official frame-rate target has been published, so a 60-fps claim cannot be confirmed from the available Nintendo specifications.

No. The published information confirms HDR and VRR output on compatible equipment but does not state a resolution mode.
