Complete the Fire Temple as Adult Link. Child Link’s useful work in this area is optional crater exploration after learning Bolero of Fire, not dungeon progression. After those checks, return to the Temple of Time, draw the Master Sword, and enter Death Mountain Crater as an adult. The normal Nintendo 64 route treats the Fire Temple as the second adult dungeon.
Which Link should enter the Fire Temple?
The Fire Temple’s intended completion route is for Adult Link. Its required traversal, caged-Goron rescues, Megaton Hammer progression and Volvagia battle are all presented in the adult route documented by QuestFern and Zelda Dungeon. Adult Link is also the character who can use the equipment and survive the hazards that define the dungeon’s main path.
Child Link still has a reason to visit Death Mountain Crater. Once you learn Bolero of Fire from Sheik, you can return to the crater for optional collection tasks, including the soft-soil Gold Skulltula and Heart Piece described by Zelda Dungeon. Those activities do not advance the Fire Temple. When you are finished, go back to the Temple of Time, pull the Master Sword, and continue as Adult Link.

What to do before entering
Preparation begins in Goron City after the Forest Temple. The city is largely empty, and Darunia’s son is rolling around the area. A Bomb stops him and earns the Goron Tunic, the essential protection for the temple’s heat. The entrance is in Death Mountain Crater, reached through Darunia’s room.
Required preparation checklist
- Goron Tunic: stop Darunia’s rolling son with a Bomb to receive it. Equip it before exploring the heated dungeon.
- Bombs: needed for the Goron City event and for bombable walls and false doors on the route.
- Hookshot: listed as preparation equipment and used to cross the broken bridge into the crater and for dungeon traversal.
- Fairy Bow: listed preparation equipment for switches and route sections that require a projectile.
- Bolero of Fire: learn this song from Sheik in Death Mountain Crater. It provides the return route for optional crater checks and later lets you reach the area conveniently.
Reaching the entrance
- In Goron City, stop the rolling Goron with a Bomb and collect the Goron Tunic.
- Enter Darunia’s room and move the statue that blocks the route to Death Mountain Crater.
- Use the Hookshot to cross the broken bridge.
- Meet Sheik and learn Bolero of Fire.
- Descend the ladder into the Fire Temple entrance.
If you are still Child Link when you learn Bolero of Fire, you can perform the optional crater collection first. The dungeon itself should wait until you have returned to the Temple of Time and become an adult.

This distinction prevents a common detour. Bolero of Fire makes the crater easy to revisit, but it does not signal that the whole temple should be attempted as a child. Treat the song as a mobility and collection tool, then change to Adult Link for the dungeon.

The main route frees eight caged Gorons and collects eight Small Keys. Each key opens the next locked portion of the dungeon in the QuestFern route. Room layouts can feel confusing because lava caverns, elevators, boulder mazes and invisible-fire sections interlock, so use the rescue order below as your navigation framework.
1. Free the first Goron for Small Key 1
From the starting room, take the left door. Locate the first caged Goron and release him to receive Small Key 1. Return to the entrance rather than wandering into locked branches without a key.

2. Open the lava cavern and collect Small Key 2
Use your first key from the entrance to unlock the lava cavern. Take the left branch and follow it to the next caged Goron. Freeing this prisoner provides Small Key 2.
3. Cross the cavern and find Small Key 3
Move to the opposite side of the lava cavern. Bomb the false door to reveal the route and release the third Goron. His cell contains Small Key 3. The bombable false door is easy to miss if you assume every visible doorway is genuine.

Continue upward using the flaming elevator. The next locked area is the Fire Slug room. Unlock it and proceed into the dungeon’s larger maze sections.
5. Work the lower boulder maze for Keys 4 and 5
In the lower boulder maze, follow the outer wall instead of cutting directly through the moving hazards. Trigger the switch, then free the fourth Goron for Small Key 4. Continue around the wall to reach the next cell and collect Small Key 5.
This outer-wall approach keeps the two rescues in sequence. If a cell appears inaccessible, check whether you have activated the nearby switch before trying to force a passage through the boulders.

6. Shoot the eye switch and cross the grating
Shoot the eye switch to open the route to the Dungeon Map. Afterward, cross the grating while a wall of fire chases you. Keep moving; stopping in the open grating section allows the pursuing fire to catch you and can send you back through the room.

The upper boulder maze and invisible-fire areas contain the next two rescues. Navigate the maze, use the available switches and sight lines, and free the Gorons holding Small Keys 6 and 7. These sections are where the adult equipment and heat protection matter most, so do not attempt to substitute a child detour for this part of the route.
8. Defeat the Flare Dancer and reach the Megaton Hammer
Defeat the Flare Dancer mini-boss. The route then leads to the Megaton Hammer, the Fire Temple’s major progression item. The Flare Dancer is fought twice in the dungeon; the first encounter opens the path toward the hammer, while the later encounter is part of the continued route.
9. Use the Hammer to free the final Goron
Use the Megaton Hammer on the rusty switch and follow the Song of Time block route. This opens the way to the last caged Goron and Small Key 8. At this point all eight Gorons in the main route have been rescued and all eight Small Keys have been accounted for.
10. Drop the central pillar and reach Volvagia
Hammer the central pillar down into Darunia’s room. Follow the opened route to take the Boss Key, then enter the boss room. The dungeon’s final fight is against Volvagia.

How the Megaton Hammer changes the route
The Megaton Hammer is more than a reward at the end of exploration: it is the item that converts previously blocked mechanisms into a continuous path. Its uses in the documented route include striking the rusty switch, opening the Song of Time block route to the final Goron and dropping the central pillar into Darunia’s room so the Boss Key becomes reachable.
Because the hammer arrives after the Flare Dancer encounter, do not interpret earlier blocked switches or heavy-looking obstacles as evidence that you missed a child-only shortcut. They are progression locks designed for the adult dungeon sequence.
Volvagia and the dungeon rewards
Boss: Volvagia
In the boss room, wait for Volvagia to surface and strike its head with the Megaton Hammer. Repeat the hammer attack whenever the head emerges. The fight is the endpoint of the adult route, not an encounter available through the optional child crater work.
Completion rewards
- Fire Medallion: awarded after Volvagia is defeated.
- Heart Container: the post-boss health reward.
The dungeon also contains five Fire Temple Gold Skulltulas listed by QuestFern. These collectibles are optional and separate from the eight-Goron, eight-key progression.

Optional crater checks before the dungeon
After learning Bolero of Fire, Child Link can return to Death Mountain Crater for nearby collection. Zelda Dungeon specifically documents the soft-soil Gold Skulltula and a Heart Piece among these optional checks; it also documents optional Scarecrow’s Song and other crater checks. None is required to open the Fire Temple or defeat Volvagia.

A practical order
- Learn Bolero of Fire from Sheik.
- Use the song to revisit the crater as Child Link if you want the optional soft-soil Gold Skulltula, Heart Piece or other documented checks.
- Return to the Temple of Time.
- Draw the Master Sword and become Adult Link.
- Return to Goron City, obtain or equip the Goron Tunic if you have not already done so, and enter the Fire Temple through Darunia’s room.
If your goal is simply to finish the story dungeon, you can skip these crater collectibles and proceed with the adult route once the entrance sequence and equipment are ready.
Common route mistakes and fixes
Trying to clear the temple as Child Link
The cited walkthroughs present the normal progression as adult-only. If you are looking for a child route because you learned Bolero of Fire early, use that song for optional crater checks, then return to the Temple of Time. The dungeon’s key sequence, Megaton Hammer gate and Volvagia encounter belong to Adult Link’s route.
Entering without the Goron Tunic
Go back to Goron City and stop Darunia’s rolling son with a Bomb. The resulting Goron Tunic is the preparation item listed for the Fire Temple’s heat hazards. Do not confuse the song learned from Sheik with the protective item needed in the dungeon.
Missing the broken-bridge crossing
The crater entrance is reached through Darunia’s room. Move the statue, cross the broken bridge with the Hookshot and descend the ladder. If you are circling Goron City looking for a separate entrance, return to that room and follow this sequence.
Assuming a locked cell means the route is wrong
The dungeon deliberately distributes eight keys among eight caged Gorons. Track your progress by key number: first key in the left-side starting route, second and third through the lava cavern, fourth and fifth in the lower boulder maze, sixth and seventh in the upper maze and invisible-fire sections, and eighth after the Megaton Hammer route.
Searching for the Boss Key too early
The Boss Key comes after the eighth Goron sequence, the Hammer work on the rusty switch and the central-pillar drop into Darunia’s room. If the boss door is your only visible objective, continue the Hammer and Song of Time block route rather than backtracking for a child-only solution.
Quick decision guide
- Want the Fire Medallion? Become Adult Link and clear the temple.
- Want the crater Heart Piece or soft-soil Gold Skulltula? Use Child Link after learning Bolero of Fire, then return to the Temple of Time.
- Missing dungeon access? Get the Goron Tunic, move Darunia’s statue, cross the bridge with the Hookshot and descend the crater ladder.
- Lost inside? Count caged Gorons and Small Keys; the normal route has eight of each.
- Blocked by heavy mechanisms? Continue toward the Flare Dancer and Megaton Hammer; the hammer unlocks the later switches and pillar route.
Bottom line
Use Child Link only for optional Death Mountain Crater collection after Bolero of Fire. Return to the Temple of Time, become Adult Link and complete the Fire Temple with the Goron Tunic, Bombs, Hookshot and Fairy Bow. Rescue all eight Gorons, collect eight Small Keys, obtain the Megaton Hammer, defeat Volvagia and claim the Fire Medallion and Heart Container.
