The first step in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is identifying which version you are playing. The Nintendo 64 original uses the Z button and C-button item assignments; Ocarina of Time 3D uses the Nintendo 3DS L button, Circle Pad, touch screen, and (in supported aiming situations) gyro controls; Nintendo Classics on Switch can display a game-specific mapping in the Suspend Menu. The same adventure uses different control names and layouts on each platform, so follow the section for your edition rather than treating modern Switch labels as universal.

This guide explains targeting, movement, actions, combat basics, menus, and the quickest way to check an unfamiliar controller.

What Z-targeting does

Z-targeting is a focus system. Instead of making Link attack in an arbitrary direction, you lock his attention onto a nearby enemy or other targetable object. The focus cursor tells you what Link is facing, and the system keeps that subject in front of him while you move, attack, or defend. It is useful for combat, aiming, and interacting with objects that would otherwise be difficult to line up.

Targeting is not the same as looking around in a first-person view. Free-looking or first-person aiming lets you inspect the environment; targeting establishes a relationship with a particular enemy or object. Release targeting when you need to examine the room freely or move without the focused subject controlling Link’s facing direction.

How do I Z-target in the Nintendo 64 original?

Choose Switch or Hold mode

The Nintendo 64 booklet asks you to choose between SWITCH and HOLD behavior for the Z button. On a first launch, Switch is the default according to the manual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Switch: press Z once to make the focus cursor appear; press Z again to remove it.
  • Hold: the focus cursor appears only while you keep Z pressed.

Choose the behavior that matches how you play. Switch leaves your thumb free after the initial press, while Hold makes the focus state temporary and can feel natural when you want to target only during a single exchange. The physical Z button is an original Nintendo 64 control; on later hardware it may be assigned to a different physical button, so do not assume a shoulder-button label is universal.

Target an enemy or object

  1. Stand where the enemy or object is within Link’s view.
  2. Press Z once for Switch mode, or hold Z for Hold mode.
  3. Look for the focus cursor. Its appearance confirms that the game has found a target.
  4. Move, attack, or raise your shield while the target remains focused.
  5. Press Z again in Switch mode, or release it in Hold mode, when you want to return to un-targeted movement.

If no cursor appears, move closer, turn Link toward the subject, or try another position. Some scenery is not targetable, so an absent cursor does not necessarily indicate a controller problem.

Use targeting in a fight

Targeting gives your attacks a consistent direction and keeps an opponent in front of Link as the battle changes position. It also makes defensive movement easier to read: you can circle the opponent rather than repeatedly turning the camera and guessing where Link will face. The original manual presents Z Targeting as part of combat and aiming, so make it your default for a single enemy until you have a reason to disengage.

How do I use items on Nintendo 64?

The Nintendo 64 version assigns usable items to the controller’s C buttons. The booklet explains the original button symbols and assignment process; consult its control pages if you are unsure which C direction is currently equipped. Before entering a dangerous room, check that the item you need is assigned to an accessible C button. This is a different system from the 3DS touch inventory, and instructions for tapping a lower-screen icon do not apply to the N64 release.

Ocarina, map, gear, and other menu screens are separate from the C-button assignments. If Link appears unable to use an item, first check whether it is equipped, then verify that you are pressing the C direction shown by the in-game interface or the manual.

How do I control Link on Nintendo 3DS?

Ocarina of Time 3D keeps the adventure’s structure but changes the input model. The 3DS quick guide calls the focus system L-targeting. It also documents analogue movement on the Circle Pad, contextual action icons, touch-screen item controls, and gyro-assisted first-person shooting and camera control.

Move, walk, run, and jump

  • A small Circle Pad movement makes Link walk.
  • A larger Circle Pad movement makes him run.
  • Running off the edge of a height or gap triggers an automatic jump. Nintendo’s quick guide states: “You will automatically jump if you run off the edge of a height or a gap.”

There is no separate jump command to memorize for ordinary gaps. Approach an edge while running, and the game handles the jump when the terrain allows it. If Link walks instead, increase the Circle Pad displacement before reaching the edge.

Use L-targeting and strafe

  1. Face the enemy or object you want to focus on.
  2. Press the 3DS L button to activate L-targeting.
  3. Keep moving with the Circle Pad while Link remains focused.
  4. Push sideways to strafe: Link moves laterally while continuing to face forward toward the target.
  5. Press L again when you want to stop targeting and move freely.

Strafing is especially useful when an enemy’s attack travels straight ahead. You can keep Link oriented toward the opponent while stepping around the attack instead of turning away and losing sight of it.

Read the action icon

The 3DS action icon is contextual, not a universal command with one fixed meaning. Depending on the situation, it can display Open, Talk, or Check. Move into the correct position, then use the input indicated by the icon currently displayed. If the icon says Talk, for example, Link is ready to address the nearby character; if it says Open, face the door, chest, or other object that can be opened.

This is the answer to “How do I talk to someone far away?”: you generally cannot activate a conversation from any distance. Move Link close enough for the action icon to change to Talk, face the character, and perform the prompted action. If the icon shows another action, adjust Link’s position or angle until Talk appears.

Use the touch screen

The lower screen holds the remake’s inventory and equipped-item interface. Tap an equipped item icon when the guide or on-screen layout calls for it; this is not an N64 input. The touch interface reduces the need to pause and reassign every item through the original C-button arrangement.

Use gyro aiming when the game requests it

Nintendo’s product information and quick guide describe gyro use for first-person shooting and camera control. When the game enters a supported first-person or aiming view, move the 3DS itself to adjust the view rather than expecting the N64 control layout to behave identically. Gyro aiming is an edition-specific feature of the 3DS remake; do not apply it to the original Nintendo 64 release.

How do I attack and defend?

Nintendo 3DS combat basics

The 3DS quick guide illustrates sword attacks, jump attacks, roll attacks, and shield orientation. Use the sword-attack command shown in your quick guide or on-screen layout while L-targeting an opponent. A jump attack combines the jump movement with an attack; a roll attack uses a roll as part of the strike. These are distinct actions, so watch the guide’s illustrations rather than assuming that every attack is triggered by the same input.

To orient Link’s shield on 3DS, hold R while moving, as described in the quick guide. Keep the enemy targeted, then use the shield while circling or strafing when you need to block an incoming attack. Release the defensive input before attempting an attack if Link remains in a guarded stance.

Nintendo 64 combat basics

On Nintendo 64, use the original booklet’s button symbols for sword attacks, shield use, and other combat actions. The Z button’s Switch or Hold setting controls how long the target focus remains active; it does not change the underlying physical identity of the N64 button. Keep the N64 instructions separate from 3DS touch and R-button directions.

How do I get help from Navi?

In the 3DS remake, Navi’s icon appears in certain situations. Nintendo’s quick guide says: “The Navi icon will appear in certain situations. Touch it to receive hints about your quest.” When the icon is visible, tap it on the lower screen to request the available hint. Treat this as an edition-specific interface feature; the presence and touch behavior described here are for Ocarina of Time 3D, not a universal instruction for every release.

What are the 3DS subscreens?

The 3DS guide identifies separate subscreens for items, the ocarina, the map, and gear. Use the touch-screen layout to switch among these categories and to equip items. The map and gear screens are for viewing and managing progression information, while the item and ocarina screens hold the tools you actively use during exploration. If an item seems missing, check the appropriate subscreen before assuming that it has been lost or unequipped.

How are Nintendo Classics controls different on Switch?

A Nintendo Classics release runs the original game through the Switch application, but the physical buttons depend on the controller you have connected and the library’s mapping. Do not rely on a generic chart that labels every Switch shoulder button as the original N64 Z button.

Open the official mapping view

  1. Start the Nintendo 64 game in the Nintendo Classics application.
  2. Open the application’s Suspend Menu.
  3. Choose View/Change Controls.
  4. Read the displayed mapping for the controller currently in use.
  5. If the library and controller combination supports customization, change the assignment in that same view and confirm it before returning to the game.

Nintendo’s support procedure covers Nintendo 64, Nintendo GameCube, and Virtual Boy libraries and explains that the view can show original-controller mappings, game-specific additional controls, and available customization. Nintendo states that access to the Nintendo 64 library requires a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership in the setting described by its support article. That statement does not establish identical membership terms in every region or prove that a particular game is listed in every region at every time.

Quick-start routine for a first play session

  1. Confirm the platform. Decide whether you are using the N64 original, 3DS remake, or Nintendo Classics on Switch.
  2. Find the target control. N64 uses Z Targeting; 3DS uses L-targeting; Switch players should check View/Change Controls in the Suspend Menu.
  3. Test the focus state safely. In an open area, target a nearby object or enemy, move sideways, then disengage.
  4. Check the action prompt. On 3DS, approach a door, character, or object and wait for Open, Talk, or Check to appear.
  5. Equip one useful item. Assign it to a C button on N64 or tap its lower-screen icon on 3DS.
  6. Practice movement. On 3DS, compare a short Circle Pad push with a larger one, then test an automatic jump by running toward a safe edge.
  7. Practice defense. On 3DS, hold R while moving to orient the shield; on N64, use the button symbol shown in the original booklet.
  8. Locate help. If Navi’s icon appears on 3DS, touch it for the available quest hint.

Common problems and fixes

The target cursor never appears

  • On N64, verify whether you selected Switch or Hold and press Z according to that choice.
  • On 3DS, press L while Link faces the enemy or object.
  • Move closer and turn toward the subject; not every environmental object is targetable.
  • On Switch, open View/Change Controls and confirm which physical button is assigned to the original target input.

Link will not talk to a character

Move closer and adjust Link’s facing direction until the 3DS action icon reads Talk. A character who is visible but outside the interaction range may not produce the prompt. On N64, use the original action control from the booklet rather than a 3DS touch-screen instruction.

Link keeps facing the enemy when you want to look around

Targeting is still active. Press Z again in N64 Switch mode, release Z in Hold mode, or press L again on 3DS. Once the focus cursor disappears, Link can move without the target controlling his facing direction.

The Switch buttons do not match an online guide

Controller mappings can vary. Start the game, open the Suspend Menu, and choose View/Change Controls. Read the assignment for your actual controller instead of assuming that a modern button label is the original N64 input.

The 3DS action icon shows the wrong action

The icon reflects Link’s current position and situation. Move closer, face the object or character directly, and wait for the desired contextual label. Open, Talk, and Check are different prompts, not interchangeable names for one permanent button.

Buying or using original hardware

The Nintendo 64 release was distributed as a physical Game Pak. If you are buying a cartridge for compatible original hardware, check the region, cartridge condition, and console compatibility before purchase. A Nintendo 64 controller can be useful for original hardware, but the documented control information does not establish that buying one is necessary for a Nintendo Classics playthrough.

Ocarina of Time 3D is the Nintendo 3DS remake of the Nintendo 64 classic. Nintendo’s European product page lists 17 June 2011 as the Game Card release date in that market. The same page says Nintendo 3DS family eShop purchases ended on 27 March 2023; those are European storefront dates, not a guarantee about every region or the availability of secondhand Game Cards.

Which version should a beginner follow?

If you want… Follow this control approach
The original button terminology and hardware experience Use the Nintendo 64 booklet and practice Z Targeting with Switch or Hold mode
A touch inventory, contextual action icon, strafe movement, and gyro-supported aiming Use the Nintendo 3DS quick guide and the L-targeting instructions
To play the original game on current Nintendo hardware Use Nintendo Classics, then verify the physical assignments in Suspend Menu > View/Change Controls

For any edition, learn targeting before worrying about advanced attacks. Once you can focus an enemy, move around it, read the action prompt, and equip an item, the rest of the opening areas become much easier to interpret.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Z-targeting and L-targeting?

They are the names used by the two main editions for the same focus concept: the Nintendo 64 manual calls it Z Targeting because it uses the Z button, while the Nintendo 3DS quick guide calls it L-targeting because it uses the L button.

How do I jump in Ocarina of Time 3D?

Run toward the edge of a height or gap with the Circle Pad. Nintendo’s 3DS quick guide says Link automatically jumps when he runs off an edge; there is no separate ordinary jump button to press.

Can I remap controls for Ocarina of Time on Switch?

Open the game’s Suspend Menu and choose View/Change Controls. The Nintendo Classics application shows the current controller mapping and offers customization where that game-and-controller combination supports it.

Can I still buy Ocarina of Time 3D digitally?

Nintendo’s European product page states that Nintendo 3DS family eShop purchases ended on 27 March 2023. That is a European storefront statement; physical Game Card availability and rules can differ by region.
