If OBS Studio lags after 30 minutes of recording, the timing alone does not identify the cause. First check whether the OBS preview, the saved recording, or playback is choppy, then use OBS’s Statistics window and the log from that session to distinguish rendering strain from encoding overload. Try the fix that matches the evidence rather than assuming the cause is overheating or storage.
First identify what is lagging
OBS describes choppy or laggy output as a resource problem that can involve rendering or encoding workload. It does not identify a unique failure that begins after 30 minutes. Treat the time as a clue for reproducing the issue: note when it starts and inspect the affected session’s statistics and log before changing several settings at once. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide recommends freeing resources when output is choppy or encoding is overloaded.
- OBS preview is choppy: The scene may be struggling to render. Check rendering indicators in OBS Statistics and look for GPU-heavy applications or complex sources.
- The saved recording is choppy: Check OBS Statistics and the session log for rendering lag or encoding overload. A choppy preview and a choppy file can have different causes, so do not infer one from the other.
- Only playback is choppy: Try the file in another player and compare a short affected section. Playback in a demanding player can be a separate issue from OBS’s recording performance.
OBS’s overview guide asks users seeking help with high encoding or CPU overload to include a log file. Keep the log from the session where the symptom occurred; it gives support a basis for assessing the problem rather than relying on the 30-minute timing alone.

Try these five fixes in order
1. On Windows, run OBS as administrator
Close OBS, then right-click its shortcut and choose Run as administrator. Record a test session long enough to see whether the issue returns. OBS lists this as a quick step that may help with GPU overload, not as a guaranteed fix. This instruction applies to Windows; it is not a general setting for every platform. 2. Free GPU capacity
An uncapped game can use most of the available GPU capacity, leaving too little for OBS to composite scenes. Close programs you know are GPU-intensive, cap the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync, and lower the game’s graphics settings if needed. Change one thing at a time and compare OBS Statistics and the resulting recording. OBS explains the GPU-capacity issue and these adjustments.
3. Reduce the recording’s resolution or frame rate
In OBS, open Settings > Video and try a lower output resolution or frame rate. OBS specifically suggests reducing 60 fps to 30 fps when 60 fps is not working. Lower resolution reduces image detail; lower frame rate makes motion less smooth. If either change resolves the lag, decide whether that quality tradeoff is acceptable for the content you record. 4. Simplify scenes and sources
Remove sources or filters you do not need, and use smaller source dimensions where that still suits the scene. Browser sources can be resource-intensive, and OBS notes that sources may continue using resources while hidden. Reduce or resize browser sources and retest; hiding an unnecessary source alone may not reduce its resource use. OBS troubleshooting guidance
5. Review the recording encoder and quality preset
In Settings > Output, inspect the recording encoder and quality setting. If your platform and hardware offer a compatible hardware encoder, it can move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component; the available options and results depend on your system. Do not assume one encoder is best for every machine. Try a less demanding preset or compatible encoder option, then compare recording quality, file size, and the session log. Quality presets involve tradeoffs. OBS says the Indistinguishable preset can produce larger files and may affect performance on older or weaker hardware. Its Lossless preset uses the CPU encoder and creates around 7 GB of data per minute of video, according to OBS Project (2023); that combination can mean substantial CPU workload and very large files. When to ask for help
If the problem persists, share the log from the affected recording session when asking for support, along with whether the preview, saved file, or only playback was choppy. Include what OBS Statistics showed and the changes you tested. OBS’s overview guide specifically recommends a log for reports involving high encoding or CPU overload.
