Keep OAuth access under control by maintaining an inventory, checking each app’s identity and permissions, removing access that no longer has a clear purpose, and reviewing again on a recurring schedule. A grant is not automatically suspicious: it becomes a risk when nobody can say which app has access, what it can reach, or whether the work still requires it.
What to review in an OAuth grant
An OAuth grant is an authorization; access tokens are among the credentials that can represent it. The terms are related, but they are not interchangeable. RFC 7009 explains that revoking a token can also invalidate related tokens and the underlying authorization grant, depending on the provider’s implementation. RFC 7009
For each connected app, establish what it is, who is responsible for it, why it was approved, and which account or organization resources it can reach. Build a record from whatever information the provider exposes; not every platform shows every field.

- Authorization: consenting user, granted scopes or permissions, and whether access is user-level or organization-wide.
- Purpose and reach: business function, data or resources involved, and whether the current permissions fit that function.
- Review signals: last-used information or a business-owner confirmation, where available.
How to review and clean up access
- Collect the inventory. Use the account or identity provider’s connected-app, authorized-app, or consent-management controls to find grants. For an organization, include both user-consented apps and permissions granted at organization or tenant level where the provider makes them visible.
- Verify the app and its purpose. Confirm that the app is recognized, that its publisher or developer is trusted, and that the work still needs it. GitHub advises users to assess an OAuth app’s trustworthiness, developer identity, and requested information. GitHub Docs: Authorizing OAuth apps
- Compare permissions with the job. Ask whether each permission is necessary for the app’s current function and whether the access reaches more data or users than that job requires. Prioritize broad, sensitive, or tenant-wide permissions for investigation. A 2026 arXiv preprint examining Microsoft 365 apps reported examples of overly broad tenant-wide scopes in its study sample; that finding is specific to the sample, not a rate for all OAuth apps. Longo et al., “Lost in Permissions: Exploring the Microsoft 365 App Ecosystem”
- Decide whether access remains justified. If the owner, purpose, or need cannot be established, investigate before removing access—especially when a shared business workflow may depend on it.
- Revoke unneeded access through the provider. Use the provider’s controls rather than assuming that deleting an app locally removes its authorization. RFC 7009 describes token revocation and notes that related tokens or the grant itself may also be affected. Google also advises integrators to revoke tokens that are no longer needed and remove them from their systems. RFC 7009 · Google OAuth best practices
- Check dependent workflows. Confirm with the app owner or affected team that expected work still functions, and record the decision and any resulting remediation. The exact effect of revocation depends on the provider and the relationship between the token, grant, and app.
How to prevent grants from piling up
Request only the access needed, when it is needed
The IETF’s OAuth security best-current-practice guidance says privileges associated with an access token should be restricted to the minimum required for the application or use case. Google for Developers recommends incremental authorization: request appropriate scopes when the relevant functionality is needed, rather than asking for every possible permission at the start. - POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Google’s guidance also recommends securely storing tokens, revoking those no longer needed, auditing OAuth clients, and deleting obsolete clients. Its advice is directed at application developers and client administrators; it should not be mistaken for a universal end-user settings path. The page was last updated 2026-05-20 UTC.
Set a recurring review and event-based checks
Choose a review cadence that fits how often your organization adds apps and how sensitive the accessible resources are. The cited guidance supports regular reviews or audits but does not establish one universal interval. Also consider an extra review after a suspected compromise, a change in app ownership, or an unexpected expansion of permissions; these are prudent operational triggers, not a quoted standards requirement.

- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Use organizational consent controls where available
Individual cleanup is only one layer. Identity platforms may offer permission and consent frameworks, preauthorization, approval rules, or restrictions on which apps users can authorize. Microsoft Learn describes permission and consent models, including preauthorization; the precise controls and remediation steps depend on the tenant and current Entra configuration. Choosing an app-governance approach
For a small set of personal integrations, the provider’s own connected-app controls may be sufficient. An organization with many users or business-critical integrations may need a maintained inventory and a defined approval and review process. If assessing governance software, compare the capabilities that match your environment rather than assuming a product covers every provider or type of grant.
- Coverage: personal integrations, organization access, tenant-wide apps, and supported identity providers.
- Visibility: whether it shows app identity, publisher, consenting users, granted permissions, and access breadth.
- Control: inventory and alerting versus approval, restriction, audit trail, and revocation workflow.
- Operational ownership: who maintains app records, confirms business purpose, handles exceptions, and follows up after revocation.
- Evidence quality: whether an app’s declared permissions can be compared with a documented purpose and observed behavior.
A 2026 arXiv preprint by Vincenzo Longo, Alberto Verna, Nikhil Jha, and Marco Mellia reports crawling over 8,000 Microsoft 365 applications; 1,069 in the examined data exposed both descriptions and permission sets. Those numbers describe the authors’ study sample, not the total Microsoft marketplace or the wider OAuth ecosystem. Study on arXiv, dated 2026-08-03
