O2 Satellite launched in the UK on 26 February 2026, initially for selected Samsung Galaxy phones. Samsung was first in the launch coverage, but O2’s current compatibility list also includes selected Apple and Google phones. The key check is whether your exact handset, O2 plan and SIM qualify—not just whether it is a Samsung.
What O2 Satellite does
O2 Satellite adds a satellite connection alongside O2’s mobile network, extending limited connectivity into some places the terrestrial network does not reach. It works on a compatible phone without separate satellite hardware or a dedicated connection app. O2 describes it as a way to stay connected in areas beyond its main network, not as universal coverage. See O2’s O2 Satellite service page for the current offer and O2’s support information for operating details.
The service is designed for text messaging, location sharing and selected apps—not unrestricted mobile data. O2 lists services including WhatsApp, Messenger, mapping and weather apps; its supported-app list can change. Check O2’s current app and help information before relying on a particular app.

Which phones are compatible?
O2’s current list includes selected Samsung, Apple and Google phones. Compatibility is model-specific, so a phone from a supported brand is not automatically eligible. Check the exact model against O2’s live compatible-device list before buying or activating the service.

The initial Samsung focus reflects the launch: Stuff reported on 26 February 2026 that O2 had switched the service on for selected Samsung Galaxy phones. Samsung Mobile Press announced the Virgin Media O2 European partnership the following day. That launch timing does not mean Samsung is the only compatible brand today.

Where it works and what coverage to expect
O2 says Satellite currently works in the UK only. It is not available everywhere: check your location using O2’s coverage checker. The connection works best outdoors with a clear view of the sky, and the phone returns automatically to O2’s main network when terrestrial coverage becomes available.

At launch, O2 claimed the service raised UK landmass coverage to 95%, adding an area it described as “two thirds the size of the country of Wales.” Stuff reported those figures on 26 February 2026 as O2’s launch claim; they are not an independent measurement or a guarantee of coverage at a particular location. Use the live checker for a location-specific answer.
What you can—and cannot—do over satellite
- Messages and selected apps: Text messaging, location sharing and supported apps can work where O2 Satellite coverage is available. Unsupported apps do not get data over the satellite connection.
- Voice calls: O2 says standard voice calls are not supported, including emergency calls. WhatsApp calls may be affected by limited speeds and can briefly drop as satellites pass.
- Message delivery: Texts are usually sent promptly, though O2 says some can take a few minutes.
- Emergency contact: O2 warns customers not to rely on Satellite to contact emergency services. Its help information says a 999 text may work after registration with the UK EmergencySMS service, but government emergency alerts will not arrive over the satellite connection. Read O2’s current emergency and satellite instructions; this is not an emergency-call service.
How O2 Satellite differs from satellite SOS or a communicator
O2 Satellite is for supported messaging and selected apps through an eligible O2 phone and plan. A phone’s built-in satellite SOS feature is a separate service, generally aimed at emergency messaging; a dedicated satellite communicator is another distinct option. They are not interchangeable: O2 Satellite does not support voice or emergency calls, and its geographic availability and eligibility depend on O2’s service. O2 discusses the distinction with Apple Emergency SOS via satellite in its support information.
